You messed up on one part, well at least I think.....

<<<You wrote>>>
Sigma is the numerical representation of the range in which your true skill could lie. Play really consistently, and you have a low Sigma. Play streakily, and you have a higher Sigma.

BUT shouldn't it be if you are consistent, you will have a high Sigma. Play streaky, and you will have a lower sigma.

Because what u wrote really doesn't make any sense.... IF I play consistent, I should be rewarded not the kids who some games get 5 kills because they didn't have sword. and the next game they get sword, they get 20 kills?
The OP hasn't commented in this thread for quite a while. There are a few of us that have hung around and continued to answer questions.

Consistently, as the OP uses it, refers to how the skill system predicts. It predicts the outcome of each game before the match begins. If the outcome is how the system predicts (you win when it thinks you should) it then lowers your Sigma. Basically, it is more confident you are close to your correct skill level. If you win when it thinks you should lose, it is more unsure of your skill level and keeps your Sigma higher.

Having a high Sigma isn't a reward and it's not always a good thing. It just means you haven't got to your skill level yet and the system is able to raise you or lower you quicker. Once your Sigma is lower, you can still gain skill levels.

Bam. Very nice post... easy to understand and very informative. Thanks, explained a lot for me; makes TrueSkill a lot more easy to understand andseem a lot less random (and thus a lot less infuriating at times).

I think he did an excellent job !!!

What I dont like is when a high skilled player( say 50) goes into a different playlist that he is low in. Like in the Valantines Day playlist almost 3 out of every four players I got matched up against was a brigader or general, just because they were a low rank in that specific playlist. Sometimes I wish there was an option for close rank to get pared up with some one with the highest skill rank near yours.

Unfortunately there would be no way for the 50's to rank up in other playlists then.

So if Iget this right sigma determines when you rank up or down according to the amount of Mu you have aquired or lost over the last few games? is that correct or even close to the general idea

  • 04.01.2008 11:58 AM PDT

This is not entirely true. I started a very good streak with a buddy on Team Doubles. After playing the same number of games (I only played TD with him never without) he reached highest skill of 30 and I only 21. He was jumping ranks like you wouldn't believe. His was a new tag with fewer games played but we still started the same on TD together. The games were pretty balanced with both of us getting 23-27 kills each. He would go up two or three ranks in the time I would go one. I noticed something interesting when playing ranked games. It seems to me that when ranked team games are played the ranking system compares you to a similarly ranked player on the opposing team. For example in Team Slayer if Team A consisted of a 31,28,28,28 and Team B 29,28,27,27 then the system would pair them off as such: 31-29, 28-28, 28-27, 28-27. So even if Team B wins, the gain is not the same for the low ranking 27 as it would be for the higher ranking 29 even if they 27 was destroying the 31. My point is this I don't care about Sigma or Mu. My game performance should reflect my skill. I should not go down in skill because of factors not related to my skill ( I played Shotty Snipes on High Ground, had to carry the team--we were one person down and we lost by one point) and of course I lost skill points because of this. Another thing I would like to question, only slightly off topic, why should I be matched up with a highest skill of 40 when my skill is 29? I have played a number of Ranked TS against players with a highest skill of 40+. I have yet to reach highest skill 30. A highest skill of 40 should never be able to lower their skill level past a certain point. A player with a highest skill of less then 30 should never have to worry about playing a player with a highest skill of 40+. Also skill differences should be limited in parties on most ranked playlists (except for RBT). A player with the current skill of 12 does not belong in a ranked game where the average player is current skill 27 (check it out here).

"There is one caveat to consider before we get under weigh. Bungie is not likely, nor or ever, to release the true inner workings of the Halo 3 ranking system, but as it is based somewhat on the Microsoft Trueskill system, this is a fair approximation of the way skill ranking works in Halo 3."

To be honest i dont think that even bungie knows how it works. They probably didnt just try to emulate the trueskill system microsoft has, but completely copied it without knowing how it works. I wish the people at bungie would come out and tell us. they need to quit beating around the bush. thats like me saying that i can send a man to the moon and hiring nasa to do it and having president bush explaining how it was done. everything by proxy...lame. BUNGIE COME OUT WITH THE FORMULA OR CODE YOU INPUT INTO THE SYSTEM AND TELL THE PUBLIC. enough with this "it is similar to..." "its kinda like..." "i think it works like this..." crap. i want facts and certainty not guesses. we are smart enough to figure out the way it works if you just divulge this info even if it is complex. but thanks for the attempt at explaining it to us el kafungus!

  • 04.02.2008 10:04 AM PDT

Pwnin noobs is fun :)

does it not also include your exp into the equation seeing as i managed to get to lvl 50 on my second account whereas because on my main account i am at 1000 exp or so it takes ages to gain 1 level, i noticed that i could get 50 suprizingly quick if i kept that account at recruit grade :P

No EXP doesn't matter...other than having low EXP is usually coincidental to not havign a lot of games played (which means higher sigma).

People make second accounts because they have a perception they will be able to rank up higher than their first accounts...because they currently suffer from low sigma.

Realistically though, all it really means is they will hit their True Skill quicker than last time, and maybe sqeek in a couple extra levels.

Hi. My gamertag is spiiikes. I recently got my 49 in Team Slayer with a game on Construct, with this game. That was on the 2nd of this month. Since then, I have won 54 Team Slayer games and lost 10, and I'm still not a General. And yes, my friends and I did play other 50s, more 50s, and more 50s. Some games were close, others easy and quick. Even got standbyed (by aikjqtsz) though kept on going. My recent losses were to three AR matches, one in which my teammate got kicked off and the other where it was lagging. I've been playing and trying, but it just doesn't go up.
