There is only one way to find your true skill. Lone wolves . Playing against complete strangers.
In team events you can play bad and still win , In lone wolves if you play bad you get slaughtered.
So if you want to find your true skill, go and play 500 games of lone wolves.. End of story

First-rate explanation. Thank you for clearing it up. I had read MS's official explanation of Trueskill, but yours is much simpler and clearer. Well Done.

What really annoys me with the ranking system is, I have had real bad luck in teams, like early leavers or AFKers, I was on the skill level of 23 and In a day my luck in teams got me down to 15.

Now what I think needs done is on TS for example, you need to be judged on your performance not the teams because, example again, I got MVP but we lost 34 - 50 because my other teamates left the game, sending me a rank behind, this gets VERY bloody annoying when it comes to the fact I could of got 10 levels up in a day but my team caused me to go 10 levels down...

Sounds like you need some friends that you can depend on.

I simply never go into Double team or Team Slayer/Objective on my own. I only play social games or Lone Wolves by my self other then that I'm with friends. that is even if I was going for say a 30 in Team slayer, I wouldn't do it unless friends were on.

Ok i have a quick couple of questions, i'm not sure who did the write up but i'm replying to elkafungus whoever wants to answer is fine he just seems to be answering alot of questions and i read pretty much all the posts, first off how old are you cause your really good at match hahaha, 2nd i understand this system almost completely but in lonewolves you say win or loss ratio most important, what exactly is a win in lonewolves?? is this similar to halo 2 as in everybody above you is a loss and below is a win?? say if you place 3rd you lost to the top 2 guys?? and depending on their rank will determine your rank up or down. kind of a simple question. Secondly and sorry about poor format but i'm tired, but you keep saying or someone does about if you have a bunch of win streaks which i do i had in the last 2 days i think or 10 sprees that were 5 wins or higher in a row in double team, anyway back to subject you said if you have alot of those streaks your sigma possibly goes up, but i would think that your sigma the more games you play should be going down and your skill going up because your winning those games?? because once I get to 50 and i will (havent met a 50 actually better than me yet) i would want my sigma to be low so i could stay there but everybody is gonna be lower than at 50 unless your playing only 50's. I mean the more you play the lower the sigma i would think because the system should know what your rank is even if you win almost every game shouldnt the sigma be low once your up that high??? When I first started I won alot of games obviously because everybody was low ranks and I was better, but I play ALOT of games by myself random teammates so I lose sometimes because either my teammate is bad or he causing me to play bad because of stupid strategy or no strategy which results in a loss usually not my fault whether i'm -5 or not especially if i have umpteen assists because of stolen kills. But i can see what your saying but win loss ratio my brother who is a 50 in 2 different categories has only play 350 or ranked matches in any category and i've played close to 1300. My brother will only play with good team-mates where as I get bored and i'm on more play with randoms and lose sometimes because of it when me and him play we win alot, alot of times when we lose its because of hiim sometimes when we lose because of me but rarely, but not get me wrong my brother is VERY good but i'm confident i could beat him 1 on 1 65 percent of the time. Yet im' only a 48 in double team and 47 in slayer. Which i can see slayer because its not just me and him. But in double team i should be ranked higher i think but i have lost alot of games due to bad teammates. Another think to is my brother is a very inconsistent player in general will go plus 15 one game and -5 the next. I hover around +5 almost every game and a bad one -5 or so. And i've had good games as many as plus 20 against above 40 ranks. Oh and another question is there anyway to tell win/losses in a specific category so maybe i could judge when i might rank up and you said or somebody did that 65 % win ratio should level you up is that pertaiing to all stats or just last 50 games??? because it seemed to finally get to 48 from 47 in doubles i had to get my ratio overall close to that at least for me. sorry this is so winded but if you have some answers for those that would be appreciated overall i think this ranking is way better than halo 2's and for all you who are lower or not any higher than you halo 2 level maybe its because you doubleshotted and glitched like nuts and now you cant and your losing??? becuase i got glitched alot in halo 2 and i refused to glitch and now i'm ranked waaaaay higher in halo 3 also because i dont get cheated i was only around 43 44 in halo 2 and that took forever to get mostly because i got cheated 40 percent of the time let me know what you think i can help with statistics if you need info because i've played alot of games

Great thread. Very informative. I still find it wierd how I can win 15 straight team slayer games with my friends and only go up 1 level (16 to 17). One of my friends was 25 in TS and didn't even go up a level across those wins. Our team went 33-3 last night with very little noticable change to our skill level. I guess I'm just still used to playing H2...

  • 11.18.2007 9:36 AM PDT

i have a question for chaddie how many overall games have you played because i was in the 40's within 3 days of playing and if you took 200 games to get to 17 then obviously you shouldnt be much higher than that because you werent winning almost every game and you had a streak last night and also according to this guy your friends may have played a ton of games and if your friend is a 25 and is playing 17's hes not gonna move up especially if hes played alot of games and cant get past 25 this makes sense to me i just wanna know about lonewolves and also what happens when you tie is that a win or what??

  • 11.18.2007 10:02 AM PDT

yeah it says you played almost 300 games and have won about 180 against level 17's and whatever, maybe you should be a 20 but your not gonna just jump to 20. See if your saying you should be a 25 then you should win almost every game but it looks like maybe you only win when you play with your friends if you went 33-3 because if you had went 33-3 your first week you would be 30 by now. When i first started playing i pretty much didnt lose and i jumped by 3 levels at a time then when i got to 47 i started losing and couldnt get much higher mostly because of bad teammates but i was losing. so basically if you cant win almost every game your gonna move slow and one streak of 30 games is not gonna cut since you lost alot before that

  • 11.18.2007 10:07 AM PDT

its suppose to rate your skill level not just rank you up because you win, if you win against 17's and your really a 20 then it shouldnt be a big thing to beat 17's thats expected. but if you lose a couple of games against 23's or so no big deal you dont go down but obviously your not as good as them so you most likely wont move up very fast if at all. i really dont understand why people are confused about this its very simple and fairly accurate. also with the case of those guys that have won 137-0. well i'm not impressed because they are also playing what 14's??? i could win every game against 14's and thats if i had morons on my team. they shouldve lost a couple early off and they would be leaping by 4 lvls at a time. that doesnt mean they should be any higher than 40 if your a 40 and cant win every game against 14's then who cares. they will move up eventually they have to but most people lose a couple games even against bad ranks especially when u first start unless thats a new account. maybe the system thinks they are cheating if they never lose??? and maybe they are cheating i've not ran into anybody that was good that hasnt lost so something is fishy i can see 2.5 ratio if your starting new account and your already good but i won a ton of games when i first started along with my friends and we moved up fast and we didnt play always together and the friends that werent as good amazingly didnt move up that fast at all and we knew they werent good and they were mad about it but its fairly accurate if you arent moving up practice in social get better and come back

well the main reason why i cant get to level thirty is i go into matchmatching by myself and about half the time the people i play with suck or someone on my team quits then and its hard haha but whenever i do find good players we party up and play for a while..but yeah i beat a general and a brigader or however you spell it..but my goal is to be a general haha but yeah good job on beating those colonels =]

i am really confused. is it not good to win a lot of games in a row? if you win alot of games in a row that means you have a higher stigma(no clue what that is)? i think the ranking system hates me. i have had a 46 for like the past month and i cant get my 47. i have won so many games. y am i not lvling up?

Reply to SickRealskillz - I've played under 100 ranked games total (about half of them team slayer), and I can only remember losing 4 or 5 ranked TS games total. I've played around 40 lone wolves games so far and I'm level 20. I guess I don't see what you are getting at...

My question is regarding how I can play and win 15 straight ranked TS games and go up only a single level when I went up 15 levels in the first 25 games...

That's a QUICK couple of questions?!?

Thanks for the explanation on the number system...it finally helps me understand why sometimes you'll gain/lose 2 or more levels sometimes.

I cant understand this??

I win like 40 games in a row,but lose skill HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

um i checked your name chaddie you have played 285 i dunno how many are team slayer but the total overall is way over 100. what i'm getting at is if the teammates your playing with play alot of games that is factored in for the whole team not just for you. so if you havent played very many and they have and they lost alot or half then you will not rank up quick playing with them in your party because there sigma is factored in with yours you have to play by yourself rank up and then play with them if you want but again if they only when like half of their games you guys wont rank up quick, even if you win 30 in a row they lost alot before that maybe not you but they did. its not as bad for double team because you only got 1 guy that his sigma is factored in and everybody receives the same mu for the win so if your teammates all have low sigma but yours is high the low will out weigh the high and thats why you dont rank up if you want to rank up and truly have won most you games then play by yourself for awhile.
