good explanation. its pretty important to know that your ranking pertains to a system as the ranking system is called and not what you do in the game. im pretty sure everyone in here has had a game with 20 or so kills and 5 or so deaths and loses. this of course does not help your ranking if your in team slayer. speaking of team slayer in specific, its also important to understand that your ranking is telling you how you play on a team and not your skill individually perse. again you can do terrific on your own and actually go down in rank or get 1 kill die 20 times, win the game by one and level up. i like to look at how good someone is by a combination of their exp, considering theyre not exp boosting and their skill level. we as players also take into account the K/D ratio and other things. all in all, this just makes halo 3 all the more interesting and it keeps it being the best game out there.

I won 23 in a row. I don't care about Mu or Sigma
I should rank up

Moo

SickRealskillz - I just double-checked. As of right now, I've played 95 RANKED games. The rest are unranked social slayer, rumble pit, or campaign missions. Almost have of my RANKED games have been lone wolf and I'm up to level 20 there (at a normal rate).

The majority of my leveling in team slayer happened with the same party, so what's the difference between my first 15 levels and my next 1?

~25 wins and 4 losses to go from level 1 to level 16 in team slayer
15 straight wins to go from level 16 to level 17

Most of which was with the same party. It simply doesn't make sense to me.

If it made to much sense, people could abuse the system more easy I think.

I don't think so. Its just not about winning or losing a game anymore.

Yes, it is as long as you win against higher levels than you. You're expected to beat lower levels and don't get much credit for it. If you play and beat higher levels than yourself consistently, your level will increase.

Sorry, I ment to say "Its not just about winning", there are other things important, too. Like the skill-levels, the number of games you've played, etc.

So if K =3

What do you think the starting values are for MU and Sigma?

If your winning alot of games but not going up most likely the other guys in your party are lower ranked so your binging in low ranks and getting squat for beating the other team since they are lower ranks then you. It took forever to get a 50 until we started getting matched against 49's and 50's, then we went up fast. Getting matched against 45-47 when Your a 48 or 49 you gotta win like a ton more games to move up then playing against 50 and 49's.

Subject: In depth explanation of the Halo 3 skill ranking system.

I like the fact that the skill/ranking system is based on mathematics. As an engineer, I can appreciate that and certainly the people who thought of it are smarter than I. I wish I knew what my sigma and mu were so I could see how I compared to the rest of the distribution. However, I can see how this system works really well for "Lone Wolves" type matches, but I wish the Team-based hoppers were different. In my last Team Slayer match, my team lost by only 2 kills. It was a good round!

But, I had the highest score over everyone AND I was tied for the best K/D ratio. Even though I didn't have the most medals, and even though my team lost, I would have hoped that the best score overall and K/D would count for something!! Yet my skill level actually went DOWN from 13 to 12 after that match, which is where I have the problem! You can view the stats directly by hitting the jump at the bottom...

I guess I just have to play better, but I thought this round wasn't too bad for me. I just don't get why my skill level went down one because my team barely lost and my personal skill was fairly high. It must be that the team games are solely dependent on team outcome more than individual skill. That makes sense being a team game. But a little extra reward for those of us who perform the best on each team might not be a bad idea, would it??

You guys need to go read a few articals writen by bungie , they quoted that your skill level will represent your true skill..
Meaning if your just running around throwing grenades and blasting with your assault rifle all day, then your skill is pretty basic, if onthe other hand you are good with other tactics such as sniper rifle or battle rifle ect ect. Then bungie will award the proper reward of more skill points.
Bungie hinted on this on one of the weekly updates back in october, and as far as i could make out they do include k/d ratio as one important factor ,as well as being able to be skillfull with other weapons and tactics.
Dont be sad if you cant get past 30 skill level, throwing grenades and assault fifle will not get you to 40.
You need to find more skills, just look at some of the films released by the top players... 4 head shots in a row with a sniper rifle, picking up and droping weapons depending on the situations ect ect ect .
Not just hiding around a corner with a shot gun, this will only get you so far.

So people stop crying and dry your eyes,so if your a 30 skill level after 300 games,, then thats your skill level compared to all the other players on h3.
Untill you find more skill in weaponary and quick thinking just settle for what you are,,, ,, average at best.
And remember this, not every one can be " TOP DOG"

Maybe it is you who needs to read. Jay copied a statement from Achronos on the second or third page and it says your individual performance has no bearing on skill levels. it only takes into account if you win or lose.

The update awhile ago meant it as in you got much better and started winning more.

I got last place in lone wolves (by a good number of kills, too) and ranked up. This is after I won 5 games without ranking up. How is that possible?

  • 11.19.2007 11:12 PM PDT

ok it looks as if nobody reads. yeah k/d and everything dont matter only wins. I went negative a bunch of games in ar ow and won them all and ranked up easy. you ranked up when you lost your 6th game in lone wolves because the system didnt know exactly how good you were until you lost. you won a bunch of games but they werent sure where to rank you until you lost conservative ranking its just tryin to make sure before it ranks you up you lost and then it ranked up. go back and read the posts before all these explains it all

Interesting discussion guys...I guess the bottom line is JUST PLAY, do the best you can, and let the system take care of itself!

Though I will try some additional tactics to see if that makes a difference. Certainly the assault rifle is my #1, but I'll try other weapons (BR, mainly) to see if that makes a diff. I suck with the sniper!

Gotta say, its a great guide, but i had a skill of 33 in lone wolves, and decided to go for achievements (1000/1000) and then i went down to 24, and i got back up to 32 and now it is tremendously hard to get up, what does this meen?

I realize this post must of taken you hours and wanted you to know it is greatly appreciated. I think it sucks that K/D is not utilized, but that is my opinion. Does lone Wolf ranking affect team slayr rank at all? In team Slayer my buddy, who has never played lone wolf, is a 19 and I am a 12. We have not played every TS game together, but most of them. Our win Loss in TS is similar but he is way out ahed in ranking although he typically has a negative K/D where I have a positve one. Thanks

It means your not skillfull enough to reach 34 yet..
It pretty simple really, it all about percentages %.
The system takes in the total population of lone wolves, only so many percent can be 50 skill, a bit like balancing the book in horses racing.
So 50-1 is 2% of the book and 9-1 is 10% of the book ect ect. only its reversed in the halo3 system.
You cant have too many at 50 skill or the book will become unbalanced, so for you to reach 33 skill badboy190, your going to have beat someone at 35+ and knock them down to your 32 skill so in effect you can rise into that 35+ percentage.
The higher skill you reach the harder its going to be to move up, because bungie insisted on capping the skill at 50.
In simple terms we are all in a bottle of water trying to swim to the top, but the top is getting narrower and narrower, and its getting harder to swim past the weight and squeeze of people at the top.
Now if bungie would just open that bottle of water we could all swim a little quicker and easier.
But in saying that the swim will be easier but the end result will still be the same, it is all relative, you will still be a skillfull 32 badboy190 but you would find moving up a lot quicker than it is now.
And if you know nothing about quantum theory and statictics, dont bother replying.

I'm kind of confused. You said that a higher sigma value will get you and lose you levels faster, but according to the formula Ranking = mu - (K * Sigma), a higher sigma value will just lower your point gain no matter the situation. So, inconsistent gameplay shouldn't get you faster level gain and loss, just slower level gain and faster loss... Any (good) explanation would be appreciated.
