Good post but what really grinds my gears is when someone makes a new account and is a gunnery sergent at level 39-40. Why is the sigma value still so high with them it should drop significantly because of how well they're doing. It really is a system that screws over people who have experiance and just play on one account.

No sigma should never drop when you are doing well. Sigma is a measure of uncertainty...and if you keep winning, how could the system accurately predict your rank yet?

Really shows the effects of low sigma. Neither you nor I have ever been an advocate of starting new accounts to circumvent sigma, but in my case it seems to be worthwhile. I'll let you know once it has stalled out and we can look at it more in depth.
I think if a player has a lot of games, 200 or more, in a list and then gets better, like enough to start winning a lot, it would be good for them. Otherwise it will take a large number of wins to get your skill level moving again.

I made an alt and got within a few levels of my original TS level in like 100 games. My original account leveled fast too but I played a lot of LW and SS before I jumped in to TS. It may be good for those that lose a lot in the beginning. I will agree that playing with as many different teammates as possible seems to increase how fast you level. We know for a fact that playing with the same people and/or mixed skills really holds you back.

I still think the fastest way to level in TS is going in alone. A good player can carry a team of randoms all the way in to the 30's no problem. Then they can party up to go up from there. I played with randoms all the way up to 40 and then started teaming up to get to 46 at this point on my alt. It seriously only took me 100 games to get to 40 - playing with randoms. I believe that playing in a party not only gives you tougher matches, it hampers the speed at which you level.

I went for a third stint with one of the guys that also had low sigma. Think we won about 80-90% of a large portion of games and I think I ranked up 1. Definately something to my theory about the system having a "memory" in a way. Of course as soon as I played with randoms my rank became volatile again. Really enjoying this test.

I would have my masters know that I have changed. And you shall be my example.

I myself am much like Frankie. I have my on days and my off days. My method for circumventing deleveling and keeping my Sigma high is that when I start to suck, I stop playing and come back another day. That way I level fast and I rarely drop.

Thats actually pretty sound advice for people on this thread.

Ok I'm having a bid of a problem. Me and my buddy, I was lvl 20 and he lvl 19 at the time, started playing ranked team doubles. We have more wins than looses and most of the times I end up as the MVP, I also get more than 17 kill. However, after almost 20 games my friend is lvl 31, while I am stuck at lvl 23 :S:S:S:S what on earth is going on???

my gamer tag: halo2delta
my buddy's gt: ubik 149

I'd really appreciate if someone can explain what's going on.

thanks

you are 10-5 in your last 15 since you ranked up to 44. A lot of your wins, not by your own fault, were against lower ranked guys. Bungie's matchmaking quality is partially to blame for that, but it is also partially because there are less people above rank 40.

Try searching under "Close Skill" to try and circumvent some of the bad matchmaking quality. You should rank up in the next 1 or 2 games.

Well, this explains a lot of what is happening to me, cause when i created my account it took me only like 70 games to get a 44 level, then i got stucked there for a while, and then i started playin with a friend on level 35 and we losted many games, and it began to get more difficult to rank up, even when i was playin with highed skilled people 46's and up, but i couldnt rank up again, right now im on 38 and it has been very hard for me to get those levels back up, i won 23 games, and losted onnly 4 but didnt rank up more than 1 level.
But i was playin against teams with lower level than my highest level (44) so maybe thats what's going on with me. I guess i must play with higher levels only, and try to get more wins in order to revert this negative row.
By the way, why sometimes even if i won the game, i rank down ?????

it's just the way the sigma calculation works. If your sigma goes down in a win (which it does), yet you gaiend almost 0 MU from teh team you beat, it might rank your skill down. We're talking a 0.1 difference max I would think.

Thanks to the OP.

In my case, it's a far better thing that I just have a blast because the officer ranks I fear will always remain virgin territory.

I'm gonna move to China, raise some chickens, make my money, and invest.
-------Awesome
I pray to black Jesus.

I stopped playing ranked.
I went down 3 games in a row even though I won got MVP and Steaktacular in both positve k/d mulitple medals and my teamate and I were consistent him being just a few kills below me in each game. He plays more than me and he was going up but every game I played I went down 1. Then when we lost went down 2. But when we lost for the second time in a row I went up 2.

Edit: All of this was on Team Doubles.

Sorry dude, I call BS on this one. You won 3 games and went down all 3. Then you lost twice in a row and went up 2. I looked through your last 25 pages of history and only saw like 4 TD games. If this is on a different gamer tag then please tell us what it is so we can check it out.

I understand the majority of the theory that underlies the ranking system but I cant say I agree with the fact a ranking system cannot be based on one detail. In games such as Team Slayer, which I play mainly since I find Lone Wolves extremely boring, using the K/D spread would be ideal for measuring skill surely since this is the underlying factor which determines a win! I agree that assists might be needed in order to perfect the system but I'm sure that that can be arranged, it cant be that difficult. People who enjoy playing team slayer shouldnt be punished for having poor teamates. Skill should be based on individuals and although that may be the case in Lone Wolves, equally those who only enjoy TS should not be punished. Besides, using a K/D ranking system would eiminate features of matchmaking such as skill boosters who play with high rank teams. Maybe I'm wrong it just seems wrong that on TS a skill level which is unique to each individual is determined a group effort. Doesnt that seem wrong?

Great Post by the war, cleared a lot of things up!

I understand that getting stuck with crappy teammates and losing games sucks. It is a team game though. Your skill level in TS is based on how you perform as a team. It's used to team you up with others who perform in a team game at about the same level as you. TS would be the easiest to judge individual stats on but it gets a little more complicated in Objective type games.

If skill went by individual stats like K/D ratio, I could get 3 or 4 kills and hide the rest of the game. I would have a killer K/D ratio but I didn't really help my team actually win the game. If it were objective games, I would have peeps betraying me to cap the flag or arm the bomb. It would turn in to 4 individuals on the same team trying to do what it takes to level up instead of 4 individuals on a team trying to work together to win.

We don't want people going up for losing games in team lists. We don't want people betraying for the sniper/rockets or to cap the flag. We don't want people getting 5 kills, no deaths and going up when their team loses. The current way/system isn't perfect but I think your suggestion would make for a much worse system and an utterly frustrating MM experience.
