A few quick questions:
Ive heard that going into team slayer alone makes you go up faster than going in with a full team, is this true?
Does the system recallibrate your level after a few games. If I lost a lot at low levels, but am now winning a lot at hgiher levels, do my old losses still effect me?
At higher levels do you level up more slowly because there aren't as many people higher leveled then you to beat? Such as being a 49 and not playing any 50s and having to win 20 straight against 47ish levels to justify for not beating people higher.
Will beating people lower then me make me level up more slowly?

I have a question:
Can quitting a game lower you sigma or mu and have an overall affect on your skill?
Because i was matchmaking one day in team slayer and my mom came into my room in the the middle of a game and promptly turned off my xbox. I was ranked a level 30 going into the game that my mom made me quit. About 25 minutes later, i came back into my room, turned on my xbox, and discovered that i had deranked in team slayer and was now a 29. Could this possibly be a glitch? or can the microsoft system explain it. I'm sure that noone went on my account and played my xbox because 1. I'm the only person in the house that ever uses the 360, and 2. everyone was downstairs eating dinner.

Maybe that arbitrary constant K is raised every time you quit a game? Idk , just getting some ideas together i guess

Smile, would ya, while we've still got something to smile about.

You lose skill if you quit.

I have also experienced wierd times of deranking. One game i played a team that which every person on the other team had at least one or higher level skill than me. I had previously one 3 games in a row and and was set to level up, and i knew that since they had higher skill than me it would still be OK if i lost. At the end of the game, my team lost and I was deranked. I was also (even though it doesnt matter, just emphasizing my point) MVP of the game with 17 kills. What gives?

I'm wondering how social matches factor into the system. do they still affect our mu and all that? cuz I have an alternate profile and I dont want to mess with anything that would...screw with my equation. and do seperate playlists affect each other? does lone wolves affect my team doubles or ranked btb, just because of my new equation changes from playing seperate playlists? lets say I screw up horribly in lone wolves, then do magnificently in team doubles. are they both affected, or just the one? if anyone has any clue, a PM would be nice. I'm just too lazy to read through all 55 pages on my grandpa's crummy, slow internet. thanks.

this also made me laugh. we got beat in doubles, and me and my buddy both went down by one. we won several in a row, no changes. then we played the same people who beat us, we beat them, and ranked up plus three each. now it makes tons more sense. haha thanks.

I was thinking (<- unusual) and the guy says that mu looks at all of the other players in the game. Maybe the guys on my team had higher skill than the guys on the other team and therefore, we were supposed to win. I was just the unlucky guy with the lowest skill in the game that got stuck with the team that was "supposed" to win but didn't, so my rank went down

I'm pretty sure each playlist has its own equation, because how else would you level up so fast in the beginning of your ranked matches if you played like 200 social

yes, but you also lose a skill level in that playlist (unless you were just about to level up).

Not if its a team game and your team wins. Then you only lose EXP.

Unfortunately, I am to lazy to read all of that, and even if I did, there is a high chance I would not understand anyways. But I do want to thank you for this because I'm sure it's helped the more technologically advanced (or something like that) community members, or for short, I'll call them people who are smarter than me lol.

Thanks mate. That helped my understanding a lot.

That should help Bungie out with the amount of people complaining to them 'bout not going up a level, eh?

P.S. Thats the first time I've seen algebra used on a forum

my friend and i played about 30 games and won about half of them. i went up 4 skills and he didnt move. we then lost a few and i went back down 4 and again he still didnt move. explain how that works. he was even doing better than me in each game.
Glad to see you found the right post to get an answer in... :)

It most likely has to do with your Sigma vs. your friends Sigma. Your friend probably has a significantly lower value for Sigma then yourself. The system thinks it has your friend pretty well figured out whereas it's unsure where to place you with regards to skill level. You are able to level up much quicker than your friend because of this. However, you will also be able to level down much quicker as you have seen first hand.

my friend also played with another friend of mine and both of them were goin up skill quickly and they were winning about the same number of games. y does he not move when he plays with my but he goes up skill when he plays with my friend

This is still just a matter of everyone having different Sigma's. When you play with people that have high sigma, you don't gain much MU and vice versa. When you play with the same people all the time, everyone ends up with very similair sigma's. The ideal ranking up situation is you having high sigma and playing against people with very low sigma.

The Monkeys are coming to kill us all!

It makes sence to me now! Thats why when I started playing my rank went up like crazy. And now scince I have gotten in 3 or 5 or 2 or 4 my rank doesn't go up as fast when I do win.

very nice explanation. Now I can explain to my friends that just because thier skill level is higher, doesnt mean they are better than me. It just means they have a higher sigma. Boy am i going to sound smart when explaining this tomorrow lol =]

So just a quick clarification......
I am a Brigadier Grade 2, only because i rarely played my own ranked games, the rest i play with my -blam!- friend.

I decided to finally go for 50 and play without my friend again......since I've played so many games with him and have an about even win/loss average with him, can i still go up to a 50 (the last 8 doubles games i played without him i wont 7 of them and the last 12 team slayer games without him i won 9)?
I.E - When i played with him, all the ranks i had achieved "leveled" out since he wasn't too good (and I'm not uber sweet enough to carry a team), but now that I'm playing without him, i win close to 80-90% of my games......with enough wins can i still reach 50?

(as in, even if you level out at a certain skill, with enough wins you can still make it to 50 and not get permanently stuck at a certain level?)
