I came here hoping to have some light shed on this mysterious subject of skill levels. I really wanted to believe the OP's explanation as it is very well thought out and comprehensive. However, it does not allow for your skill level to be raised after a loss.

Today my skill level went from 11 to 12 after this game:

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=586819 529&player=SoggyToast111

I came in 4th place.

I don't understand how this is possible if wins and losses are the only stats that the system looks at.

Lukems or shiska had a post about this a while ago. Sometimes the ranking system lags behind one or two games, resulting in going up after a loss or down after a win. ill post a link if I can find it.

I think the easiest fix would be to make it individual effort and not team effort.

Benefits:
1. Greatly reduce people yelling at team mates for poor preformance since only personal effort goes into ranking. (it's not right to do since it's just a game, but it does happen frequently, especially at the more competitive levels). - Happier Halo 3 Community -

2. Players match making level would adjust to their skill, and not their team mates skills, greatly eliminating the large difference in skill often found in each level. (Since it's a number that is supposed to ajdust to find players of simular skill (more fun right?) why would anybody want a players skill level inflated by the skill of other team members, only to struggle when the higher skilled team members are no longer matched with the player. - Again Happier Halo 3 Community -

3. Great reduction in boosting and cheating. Even if a player is standbying for their team, the team isn't getting any kills, and will not level up, so what would be the point? Or if playing with a higher level player to boost your account, if you aren't able to keep up then your level wouldn't go up so what would be the point of boosting? -Again Happier Halo 3 Community-

4. Be able to play with your friends that are not as good, still have fun when they do horribly :) since their play doesn't effect your skill level.

Anyone else think of any benefits of this idea???

I would rather have my level adjust to my efforts in a game, so I can continue to raise until I reach the matchmaking level that is equilivant to my skill (making the game more fun) and not have my level increase delayed because I am matched with players with inflated levels from playing with their superior team mates are going through a readjusting phase back down to their actual level.

Why make a big deal who cares right? Well remember we are paying somebody a yearly fee to maintain our XBL experience. We should demand it to be better.

so basicly what you are saying is that if you play on one game type constantly you have less chance of moving up a skill.

You had a very high sigma, then.

I have a 48 in LW and have played 18 games on it. Two 3rd place finishes and the other 16 games I came in 1st or 2nd (about 50% 1st and 50% 2nd). My rank doesn't seem to be going anywhere and theres nothing I can do about it. Obviously most of the people I play are below my level, because even if I search for people close to my skill level I am gonna end up with waaay more people below me than above me. Not many 49s and people don't usually play once they get their 50s. So I am stuck beating lower levels and not moving up. Winning 30+ games in a row to go up in rank is not very feasible, because if I place 3rd or lower to people lower in rank, it will offset a handfull of wins.

It pretty much sucks.

Hmm, I have a question, I don't think this was answered in the op.
Say you get a high sigma, is that for all the playlists, or just the one you've been winning in?

  • 07.06.2008 2:35 PM PDT

Show No Mercy! Kill All That Appose Us!

the only problem with this is all the people who make new accounts and just boost there way to 50s

Aside from the crappy matchmaking quality up in the high 40's, keep in mind you still will be gaining SOME MU for those wins. I know its frustrating but it sounds like you are really close.

not to complain more as i know it annoying but i, at one point in the past not recently, and a few other friends of mine went on a win streak of 26 in a row on team slayer, not an exaggeration, now one friend was something along the lines of 20-25 and the rest of us were in our 30's, 38 for me personally, i went up 2 times after the 24th or so win while the 20-25 friend went up to a 35, I was at 40 then, but then we lost 1 game and i dropped back to a 39, i obviously was furious so we played again in a mad attempt to reclaim my rank. We won 3 in a row and my friend was now at an 38 while i was still at 39, we lost 1 more round and take a guess at what happened... thats right i was sent back to 38!!!! i only recently received my 40 back. explanations pl0x?

I'd chalk up the deranking to losing to worse players...Bungie's fauly from poor matchmaking quality. I didnt go through your stuff though.

You have to stop playing with the same guys that much though...that is well documented in here. You get very little MU for wins when playing with the same peopel excessively.

What is the Trueskill system?
The Trueskill system is a player skill rating system for Xbox Live. Halo 3 uses a version of the Trueskill system in order to make the matches fairly even.

is true skill part of xbox live, meaning it takes wins and losses from all games you have played online, or is it part of halo 3? because you said true skill is a a rating system for xbox live, and that halo 3 has a version of it. so does this mean you could have a true skill even if you have never played halo 3, but have played another game, such as GTA 4, CoD 4, Forza, etc. online.

Team Doubles = 49
MLG = 50
Team Slayer = 50
Team SWAT = 47
Lonewolves = 41
Team Snipers = 46
Squad Battle = 36

So, if you play with the same people in ranked matches, will you level up more slowly? That doesn't make sense.

does your amount of xp have anything to do with how fast you rank up?

Not directly. Low EXP usually means u have high Sigma from not playing much, which is good for ranking.
