you are retarded if u read this u would understand. if u consistently went +10 then that means you are streaky, which means it would higher your sigma and ur skill level. consistency is when you win one then lose one, win two and lose two etc.

I had this happen to a friend of mine in Team Doubles, we were beaten convincingly 25-18 by a Level 47 and a Level 18 (47 had 22 kills, the 18, 3) I am a Level 38 in TD and my friend was a 27 so combined our team had +1 skill more than the enemy, and we lost, which if I'm understanding the OP correctly should have resulted in a lower Mu since the 'Trueskill' system doesn't take into account in game statistics (other than win/loss) however my partner, 'Saturn 1337' went up by a single level. The only thing we could think of to explain this was that he got MVP for the highest K/D ratio in the match, but according to Trueskill that doesn't matter, I'm not trying to bash what is an excellent explanation (albeit an approximative one) just looking for some answers as to why this happened, preferably in terms of Mu and Sigma, so that I can relate it to the original post and maybe finally make some sense of Bungie's Halo 3 ranking system.

Thanks in advance, and kudos for the brilliant OP.

I looked through your histories to try and find the game you were talking about but I couldn't. If you link to the game we can see what the deal is. Usually when you go up from a loss it's because of a DNF in the previous game. When you DNF, it sometimes takes a game or 2 to catch up. It makes it appear like you went up from the loss when in reality your skill level hadn't updated yet before you started your next game.

Very well thought out, and very well organized. While I already had a decent grasp on this from Microsoft's website, tis could be the proverbial Halo ring against all 'My rank isn't moving' threads.

P.S. You can has Recon.

You can have R***n LOL

Very Informative. thxs

Finished the Fight!

Ok. My highest level is, unfortunately, on the lone wolves playlist, yet going up on that playlist for me is ridiculously hard because, well, I mostly suck and I only play sporadically. I've been stuck on level 27 for the better part of a month now. A couple of days ago I had a really lousy run on Lone Wolves, losing about 4 or more consecutive games without being among the top four players. Yet my level didn't go down. How would that be explained? Would the higher rank kills I managed in any of those games gave me a reprieve of going down one level or what? Before that lousy run I did have a couple of strong wins raked in. Did those help to keep me on that level despite the bad run?

I couldn't of said it any better myself Naku. I am in the boat of winning consistently but the rooms I end up in from what I have been reading are hurting me more than helping me.There is obviously nothing I can do about it but I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who has a serious problem with this system. Thanks!!

There is something you can do about the rooms you are in. Search for matches using cloests skill rather than quickest. Won't guaentee anything but it should help in the long run.

I took a look. A couple of the losses were against guys way higehr than you, so you would not be penalized very much for those losses.

That was a great explanation of how the rank works. I still don't understand it completely. I have been playing for several months and was stuck on a skill of 13 in Team Slayer forever then in the past 4 days I am all of a sudden an 18. All of my friends are like WOW where did that come from and all i can say is I don't know. Maybe I am winning more but if it is only winds and losses that matters then the system is -blam!-. You can be a tag along and never do anything good and get ranked up because the rest of your team is good. That is retarded.

Dedicated driver.

I think you missed out on something. Even if you win a game it doesn't mean you're good. Truskill knows this. My theory is that truskill also takes stuff like, the weapon used, the location fired from and the body part that the bullets hit and hit percentage is also part of Truskills calculations. The reason they haven't explained this system to us yet is because it's incredibly advanced.

Programs that calculate skill in other games uses this kind of system. I've worked with one myself, while I was making a private server for CoD4 (but then again, it crashed and died).
Aiming for the head and breast were was more important then winning the game.

You see a lot of posts where people go "d00d sersly i has win 10 games and no rank upz!!1". That MIGHT be because they win by only shooting their opponents in their legs with the AR all the time. If they would have shot them in the head with the BR several times, they might've gotten more skill.

Hmmm... I usually go for headshots any way, but I'm going to try for them even more now!!

I have to agree on the awesome explanation post on the ranking system... Very useful

Thanks,

feck yeah.

Here's the way a ranking system should work:

*Point Based: Kinda like Call of Duty 4's / Vegas' ranking system.

-You always get points to level up....but sometimes points get taken away.
-You get points from every match that you participated in. (At least a decent K/D.)
-Make it simple, with rewards on the way through your levels. Not "do this to get this", but "get here to get this".

OVERALL: Makes the gameplay much easier knowing "If I do good in this match, i get rewarded." with the backup of if you don't do good "Hey, at least It wasn't a total waste and I atleast got points."

*Really "True Skill"

-This is based on how YOU do not how YOUR TEAM does.
-This would be an improved version of Halo 3's Ranking system.
-If you do good in a match, you are singled out of your team and given Skill points. (Things like K/D, multi-kills like an overkill, and headshots would level you up in this, but things like that could also level you down.)
-Even if you got last place in Lone Wolves but you made an effort and got a possitive K/D, this kind of system levels YOU up.

OVERALL: This is a well-balanced system that can hurt you (keeping you playing on bad days), but can help you also. THIS needs to be Halo 3's Ranking System.

Now support me on your ideas.

This thread is not to discuss alternate ideas but simply to address how the current system works.
