Since your post is stickied I'll assume it is as least correct as a first approximation. For the most part I play social big team and in that setting the skill level of the players is never correct. Inevitably you end up with 1 or 2 players who get a k/d ratio that is absurdly high. You wind up with laser hogs who make it impossible to move anywhere on the map without getting blasted.
So you can't organize any kind of strategy because someone with a laser will just blow you away from the other side of the map. Further, this behavior actually does very little to help the laser hog's team win. So you wind up with a situation where players who are extremely good at the laser never really level up to a point where they'd be facing players of equal skill.
Instead almost every game is a meat grinder with lasers and snipers basically running the board. I suspect that many of these players have hacked in a KB and mouse to make shooting more accurate. Combine that with autoaim and you have players that virtually never miss. Further, Bungie decided to make the laser and rifle respawn even if someone is already holding it.
I can remember some awesome games on coag where I'd race out and grab the rockets and then jump back into the banshee. The rockets would never respawn and the snipers can't take out the banshee. In Halo3 the laser is like the rockets on steroids AND they respawn even if someone is already holding it.
In short, the game becomes all about distance laser shots and sniper headshots. Which is, by the way, fine for big team slayer but for objective maps I think the laser and sniper ought to be either eliminated or cut way back. That would encourage the use of strategy in order to achieve the objective. The way it is set up now the incentive is for everyone to run in different directions because any "grouping" will just get you lasered or sniped that much faster. There is virtually no point to coordinating an attack with vehicles because the laser is a "can't miss" weapon on every vehicle in Halo3.It's not a sticky, it's merely a hot topic but what does your post have to do with the skill system again?
Anyway, a huge part of BTB is controlling things like the laser and/or sniper along with tons of other things. Removing things to make BTB less strategic is not a good idea IMO.
