Well This Sigma Nd Mu Thing Still Confuse Me So.. At One Point I Was Undefeated In Double Teams I Wanna Say I Had Played 83 Games Or So.. And After Winning About 15-20 In a Row And Not Leveling Up Kinda Got Me Aggrivated. Especially Getting 1st Place almost Every Time.. My Mu And Sigma Should Of Been High Enough To Level Up Just About Every Game Considering I Was Undefeated. And It Wasnt Even A Level 40 Yet.. It Was Just About At 37.. It Took Me Till About 160 Games To Get To A 50 With Atleast A Win Percentage of 85% or More

You played a lot of games with a teammate that was more than 10 skill levels apart from you. When playing in a mixed skilled party like this you don't get as much credit for a win. Playing with a teammate within 10 of you would have allowed you to level normally.

hi
very interestin read,
may i add my my theory,i was a highest skill12 for ages and counldn rank up my winn and loosing was prob 60-40 at the time on team slayer,so i started playing lones wolves and the matches were quick and low and behold i stated going up in skill so im skill 15 now,
i have simply based how i go up in skill on this -
it seems to be that i go up in roughly either 3-5 wins
if i dont win the first game come 3rd in the second match and 2nd in the 3 match i seem to go up in skill,
but recently the matchmarking has put me against stupid games of players with skill level 28-29-46-48 and then out of say 3 or 5 games the system puts me in games with other people who only have the same or only just above my skill of 15 then i will and then i skill up.
does this make sence.
also if i finish with in 1sr/2nd/3rd i still get the experience..
i seem to finish in the top 3 alot

So I'm pretty sure I understand all of this for the most part. But I'm still a little confused as to why it's putting me against people that are tremendously better in both actual rank and obvious real skill than I am...

See in the beginning I used to win all my matches, even carrying my team a lot. So, as you said, i leveled rather quickly. Then when I got to about 30 as my highest skill rank, and a major as my social rank, it suddenly started to put me up against teams of full generals and/or brigadiers, everyone having played a total of 3000+ games on top of my 370. So now I find myself to be dragging my team down or getting third at best. However, sometimes the ridiculously good people are also on my team and we end up winning the match because of them. So is that why, even though I'm sucking hardcore and losing more than winning, it still pits me against people who are clearly better than I am? Honestly, it can be quite frustrating....can I just lose a bunch of matches or something?

So how do you get your sigma up?

So how do you get your sigma up?
Normally you can't but either winning a lot of games against higher skilled players or losing a lot of games against lower skilled players. By a lot of games I mean 50-100 depending on how many games you've already played in that playlist.

Usually your sigma is always decreasing until you level out at your normal sill level. You sigma is a small amount at this point at it takes a lot of wins or losses to go up or down 1 skill level. If you suddenly start winning every game, eventually your sigma will go up and help enable you to gain skill levels quicker.

One thing that I'm sure will have been asked before, but I don't know the forum well enough to seek it out:

If I am a 5 star General, all of which was played in Team Slayer, and I go now into Team Snipers (Where I am Level 1 with 0 exp), and team up with my friend who's Level 1, 0 exp - and we play together - do we rank up at the exact same speed?

What I'm asking is, are Mu and Stigma completely separate for different playlists?

Can I play Team Slayer, Snipers, Squad Battle and then go back to Lone Wolves in 6 months time and rank up just as fast as I would have 6 months previously? (If I play 0 Lone Wolves games during that time)

Thanks for any help.

Yes, each list is separate and has it's own MU/sigma..

Yes, if both of you have never played a game of snipes and you both only play snipes with each other, you will level at exactly the same rate. If one of you plays even 1 game without the other, you will then not level at the same speed.

As far as I (we) know, time has no effect on your sigma/MU. In other words, not playing for a long period of time will not change your MU/sigma. If you quit for 6 months and then go back to LW, it would be no different then playing the very next day.

I started a new account once... goto lvl 25in lone wolves, winning pretty consistently(maybe losing a game or two) then I stopped moving up in rank. even though i carried on winning I didn't move up in rank . I think I ended up winning something like 15 games before it jumed me up like an additional 7-8 ranks. If you keep winning... YOU WILL MOVE UP. you may be surprised by how much though.

No, your displayed skill level is a summation. Sigma is a variable and is used for a summation.

Very informative. I still hate trueskill though. It shouldn't matter how good you used to be. Your trueskill should all be about how good you are now. Winning 10 matches in a row should make at least some effect on your rank.

This is my first account and if you look, I play Halo on an off, just recently starting to play a lot. So when I first started playing I lost quite a bit. However, now I'm a lot better and consistently win lots of matches. But I've maxed at a skill of 29 because my old stats are bringing me down. That's not right.

I was in a party for quite a while and I went up 1 rank, while my friend who was on a new account went up 17 ranks. Sure, he's a lot lower ranked and I understand him going up a lot, but by the end of the day he was barely below me. I could've started a new account and gone way past my highest rank right now, but the system doesn't allow it.

That's why so many people start up new accounts, because their old ones will always be hampered by their first matches. And that's also the reason why there's so few legit 50's now. Trueskill doesn't really show your "true" skill in the present, it's more like "CareerSkill".

Halo 2 had it right. Halo 3 doesn't.

Not 100% true. If you show significant improvement, you will go up. I've taken accounts "rank locked" at various levels and got them up with winning about 80% of the time. In other words, 4-8 straight wins per skill level. This is about how many it took to move 1 in H2 once you got 25 and up.

The only time this isn't true is if you are playing in a mixed skill party where you teammates are more than 10 skill levels apart from you or in lists with a very low player pool where you cannot find quality matches against peeps of equal or higher skill level.
