Bungie has always enjoyed moving around, picking up different ideas, testing new genres, doing what they want to do. After making marathon, they looked at the market and saw a huge oversaturation of new generation, steriod-indluced graphic FPS's. They didn't want to compete against that, and instead went into Myth, the groundbreaking, origianl Real Time Tactical. After that some of Bungie went to make Myth 2, but iirc, Jason Jones began making halo, off of myth's engine! Another group of Bungie-ites, based in San Jose began making Oni, a third person action game. Of course, now Bungie is on top of the world; they could make anything they want. They'll make whatever they think will be fun and exciting. For a while they were making "Pheonix," code named for a never named medieval strategy game. In their words, it wasn't fun. so they didn't continue making it. and they team didn't mind joining on a seperate project: Halo2. Game making is a crazy business, but rest assured, Bungie will do alright for us.
On a similiar note, I was just wondering what would happen if bungie actually did shift genres? I mean, Bungie fans were a small group of mostly mac gamers that'd play anything bungie spit out to them, and who willingly picked up myth after a long series of FPS's. But will today's über-activty young, and freakin huge Bungie fanbase accept something that isn't a First-Person-shoot-everything-you-can game?
it'll be hard to top Halo 2 with anyone less than a game with "Halo" in the title ;)
