Subject: Downloadable Halo Will Not Have Xbox LIVE Functionality

So I think Jun's a master chef, because he takes off his helmet and your like whoa, I think he's a chef.

So to shorten this up, Jun is master chef.

Well guys, it seems as though downloading the game will be pretty pointless after all. Over at the Xbox.com forums, I asked the question, and got an answer from one of the employees, Trixie, and it's a no. Here are her exact words:

Will Halo have Xbox LIVE functionality? Please, tell me! I need to know!

No, this isn't a new or updated game with new code. This is the classic Halo: Combat Evolved. The coolness is that you can download it over Xbox LIVE--you don't have to mess with a disc.

This is, indeed, a sad day. I guess we're gonna have to keep using XBC.

I know. I was shocked. I mean, come on, that would bring in so much cash for Microsoft, it's ridiculous. We should boycott and make sure that no one here buys it to prove that it needs online..

"its not the years, its the mileage"

I won't believe it without proof. It would be retarded for them not to add a live function. Lets face it, Microsofts goal (any company, really) is profit, and not giving Halo CE a live function will MASSIVELY reduce the number of people that download it thus massively reducing their profits.

I'm still holding out hope.

Please Bungie, redeem yourself w/ Reach.
Halo 2 and 3 both stink out loud.
In the immortal words of Mr Horse: Halo 2? No sir, didn't like it.

WOW.... She's right. That is soooooooooo cool. I can spend more $$ for something I can't even touch rather than saving money and hard disk space and having an actual physical product. Way cool yep.

My goodness are people that stupid that they fall for this stuff???

I am completely baffled by all the oooohs and aaaaahs about this. Anyone that spends their hard earned money on this should send me a PM. I have much better ways you could blow $15. :)

I have no clue. Go to the Xbox.com forums and ask her yourself. It's pretty dumb and I know that anyone who would buy it is one of the most retarded people I've ever seen. I'm gonna get Fable and that's about it.

maybe they are keeping it a secrety to reveal it on a certain day before it comes out...is there anything major with the PS3 happening this month?

And add me to the lost of poeple that would pay $60 for an xbox live enabled Halo CE untouched (same physics, gamepay, weapons etc).

Well, Microsoft isn't like that. They're a corporation, not a small businness like Bungie. If they say no, then it's gonna be a no. Also, the reason that they did this is because the PS3 is going to have PSOne titles for download in '08.

  • 11.14.2007 11:24 AM PDT

No online, no purchase. And im standing by that.

Yeah, I would probably pay more than $60 for that.

Since the game would have to be rewritten in order to support XBL, I wonder, just wonder, if XBL-classic emulation is somehow going to support Internet system-link games. In other words, since the 360 is emulating an Xbox classic, perhaps the emulation could also be written to support/use a MS-written or licensed 3rd party type of tunneling software.

That way, any pre-XBL titles would be "playable" online, but not need to each be re-written with full XBL support or certification.

I think I'm going to make that my new signature...

"The coolness is you don't have to mess with a disc"

LMAO -blam!- retarded

So much for an XBL Halo CE. At this point I've given up all hope. This was the chance and it's gone. What I don't understand is why no one will do it. It's obvious that it would sell *very* well. Everywhere I've read about this story I've seen 1 of 2 questions. Will there be XBL multiplayer and will there be achievements. I really only care about MP but still.... I'm not alone.

it would not be easy to implement Halo CE so that its Xbox live compatible

halo 1 was designed from the ground up to run in a fast and clean LAN environment, not a slow and dirty internet environment

if you transplant halo 1 onto the internet (like XBC does), unless you have extremely close hosts with extremely fast connections, the result is a lag fast.. this is not because of XBC, this is because halo 1 CANNOT COPE with being online, it simply was never designed for it.. all the netcode and hit detection was designed around very small ping times

halo 2 and halo 3 have relatively no lag because they were designed for internet gaming, they have alot of prediction coding that allows it to compensate for internet gaming.. halo 1 was never intended to go online, and therefore has very little prediction coding

i doubt bungie would ever want to tarnish the good name of halo 1 for the sake of an XBL lag fest, because there is no way to go back and completely change the games netcode, hit detection and prediction without royally mucking with what essentially MADE halo what it is

there you have it, if they shoved XBL into original halo 1 it wouldn't work, and if they changed halo 1 into something more suitable for online gaming it still wouldn't work, because it would never come close to what we experienced the first time on LANs and split screens

I can see where your coming from, but I used to play it online and it was still good fun. Its same as all older games, there was no prediction you just aim in front. Made it so much more rewarding when you landed that 3 shot kill.

  • 11.14.2007 3:42 PM PDT

I like me.

As many have said before, It'd be great if they included a tunneling program for halo 1. Alas, they won't, for reasons that I have no idea what they are.

Until there's some way to play it over live, I'm not buying it again.

Maybe..... but I doubt it.

I've wondered that as well. That could be added on as a future update to the dashboard. That seems reasonable, and Bungie would never have to touch the game. I'm not sure how they would implement that in an incredibly usable way though. You'd still have to have some kind of front end to pick games. The other problem is that it would still be quite laggy. It might be better than XBC though.

In a interview with Aaron Greenburg on line at Gamespot.com it says that

1) It will not support Xbox Live
2) There will be no acheivements
3) you will not have access to the XBL side bar it will say the same thing as it does now lf you play HALO CE on the disk
4) it is using the same files used to emulate the game from the list so it is EXACTLY the same as plaing HALO CE now
5) IF you were thinking about getting it same your money and just get it for 3.99 at Gamestop or something because you are not getting anything extra from buying it online

That's quite lame indeed. Well I guess we can hope for tunneling software to some day be built into the emulator.

So may I ask whats the point in this? When Microsoft listen to the fans, then and only then will they get a decent profit from the xbox.

As much as I would enjoy a LIVE-enabled Halo 1, that's just not true. They would not make money from this.
