it would not be easy to implement Halo CE so that its Xbox live compatible

halo 1 was designed from the ground up to run in a fast and clean LAN environment, not a slow and dirty internet environment
if you transplant halo 1 onto the internet (like XBC does), unless you have extremely close hosts with extremely fast connections, the result is a lag fast.. this is not because of XBC, this is because halo 1 CANNOT COPE with being online, it simply was never designed for it.. all the netcode and hit detection was designed around very small ping times
halo 2 and halo 3 have relatively no lag because they were designed for internet gaming, they have alot of prediction coding that allows it to compensate for internet gaming.. halo 1 was never intended to go online, and therefore has very little prediction coding
i doubt bungie would ever want to tarnish the good name of halo 1 for the sake of an XBL lag fest, because there is no way to go back and completely change the games netcode, hit detection and prediction without royally mucking with what essentially MADE halo what it is
there you have it, if they shoved XBL into original halo 1 it wouldn't work, and if they changed halo 1 into something more suitable for online gaming it still wouldn't work, because it would never come close to what we experienced the first time on LANs and split screens
