The Pistol was a good weapon, and Halo 1 is a good game. But, in mulitplayer, unless you were some kind of prodigy with the Plasma Weapons, was there any reason to drop a pistol ? In Halo 1 it was Pistol/Sniper, Pistol/Rocket, Pistol/Shotgun, etc. To survive in Halo 1, you needed to be good with a pistol.
In Halo 2, there is no manditory best weapon. If you want, you can be a killer SMG user, or a laid back sniper, and stealhty swordmaster, a Battle Rifle-Midrange Combat expert, etc. yes, the sword dominates if you camp. But if you have a shotgun, and wait at the entrance of the Blood Gulch base (Halo 1), and the guy runs in, don't you have just as easy of a free kill ? There was camping in Halo 1, just with a different weapon.
As for the claim that whoever shoots first wins, wasn't that the same in Halo 1 ? Are you telling me that if a guy shoots you in the head across the map with the pistol, you're going to be able to turn around, figure out exactly where he is, and kill him ? What if you get frozen with a plasma rifle ? What if a guy chases after you with a shotgun, will you be able to magically turn around and kill him before he shoots you a second time ?
The fact is, for almost every complaint made about Halo 2, it was there in Halo 1. Both are mindblowing games, respect them each.
