It's true that you didn't always spawn with the pistol. But when someone got a pistol on a map where it wasn't the default weapon there would be another pistol available a minute later. Everyone had a chance to get one. Unlike halo 2 where the power weapon respawn has made game play a nightmare. CTF on coagulation is now capture the rocket launcher.

I agree with the fact that the weapons respawn rather quickly, but you cannot then come to the conclusion that everyone has an opportunity to get the weapon. Let us use some examples. First...Derelict. Not a bad map...if you are on top. I have played Halo many times and everytime that a team gets on top it is just a blood bath. Yes, I know that there is a pistol on the lower level, but with a four man team welding pistols, rockets, and at least one having the overshield, it makes it impossible to get to a pistol without dying. Also getting up top is quite difficult when you are getting spawn killed. Next, lets look at one of my favorite maps of all time...CHILL OUT. Who wants to get to the shotgun room?? I know I did because if anyone else got in there first i knew it was going to be shotgun chaos. And since i didn't make it in there fast enough (or didn't get spawned there) i was sol. Ok a few more quick examples of the pistol and shotty being ridiculously control weapons that are just way too powerful. Damnation...get up top and pistol snipe. Rat Race...get up top and pistol snipe once again. And finally Longest...Get the shotguns and pistols and stand at the end of the hall and pistol snipe.

ps. This is to everyone -- if you are going to post that "everyone starts with a pistol" DON'T, because it simply isn't true (unless you are all pansies and only play with human weapons).

Most everyone I have ever played with plays human weapons. Watch some of the Ogre videos in Chill Out. They spawn with Pistols, so they must be pansies I guess. Your arguements are weak. You must have really sucked nuts with the pistol and thats really why you are glad its gone.

Look, sHo7, you obviously don't know about the DEFAULT settings in Halo 1. If you play DEFAULT you get to experience the entire weapon set and not just 5 weapons. It actually takes more skill to use the original intended weapon set, because you have to deal with starting with a Plasma Pistol when the other team might already have the pistol. Bungie didn't want us to forget about half of the weapons in the game, and just play Human weapons! Most everyone that you play with must just want the cheap way out, when you start with human weps you don't have to worry about making it to the pistol before you get killed (cough less skill involved cough cough). I bet you really suck with alien weapons. You should try it some time, it takes a different and more sophisticated type of skill to use the entire weapon set, and requires more original strategies than just "Pull Out Pistol, Fire." With human weps on, it you don't have to work for your kills, you just pull that M6D and plug away. Otherwise you have to find it, while wielding inferior weapons. Anyway, I don't care about Ogre videos, in fact I have never even heard of them, but that doesn't mean I suck with the pistol or human weapons for that matter. In fact, my favorite combo in Halo 1 was pistol and shotty, the most effective combo in the game. Try playing the default settings on levels like Damnation, Derelict, Chill Out, Blood Gultch, and Longest. Then get back to me, because I know you will be whining about not starting with your precious pistol.

ps I loved the pistol, but the BR is a much more balanced solution to the medium range weapon.

pps before you tell me that my argument is weak, try spelling correctly, and looking before you leap. Go play Default.

ppps I'll beat your ass anytime in Halo 2, or you can come visit me, and I'll rock you on Default settings.

PS- Its not hard to use a plasma pistol,or the plasma rifle. Needler blows so why would I even want it on the map.

PPS- I could really give a fuk about spelling. So you can leap your mouth right onto my balls.

PPPS- If you want to add me go ahead. If you beat me thats fine, I could care less. My gamertag is the same as my board name.

PPPPS- I probably play more Halo nowadays than Halo 2 and sure man I will be right over to your house so you can beat my ass at Halo.

Just to remind everyone, this link is not about Halo 2. It is about how monotonous gameplay in Halo 1 became after people discovered that the pistol was the all powerful weapon. Try to avoid complaints about Halo 2, unless you are trying to make a point about Halo 1 by comparison.

I remember reading this post when it first came out and he had a point. Halo 1 was a great game, but it centered around only two weapons. The pistol and the shotty. Multiplayer was always a rush to the pistol (or if you had one you just pulled it out and started pecking away) and I remember how powerful the shotty was too. If one team had pistols and shottys and clumped together there was no stopping them without a rocket launcher. The gameplay was monotonous is always became a pistol fight. I think Halo 2 has varied gameplay, because no weapon is so great that it is the only thing to use.

ps. to the moderators, can we see the original post after his blacklisting is over? it had some really good points in it.

actually never used the reg pistol. Couldn't stand it. Plasma pistol now....play against me while I am weilding this and you'll see why I don't use the reg pistol

PP is fun, but can't hit crap with it at anything past a few feet. Putting it on full charge for homing, and it is much easier to dodge in Halo 1. In an open map like Hang Em you'd get owned with a pistol.

I totally agree Box, Halo 1 had one claim to fame and that was the pistol. Once you picked it up (or if you played with wimp settings like Human weps only) you could dominate anyone and anywhere, and there was really no reason to pick anything else up. I tried avoiding playing with the pistol once and I got owned because everybody else was pistol sniping me from afar. I think that Halo 2 balanced the "pistol problem" and made for a wide variety of gameplay instead of pistol/shotty wars.

Yes, now its just a great fun time hoarding all the weapons in one big -blam!- pile of MC's. Thats infinitely more fun.

Well everybody who loved Halo 1, it looks like Bungie is bowing to your infinite (or rather nonexistent) wisdom and Updating Halo2 to perform more like its predecessor. What do you think? I welcome comparisons between the two games, but make sure that you only discuss Halo 2 if you are discussing Halo 1 as well. This is the Library, for gosh sakes.

Everybody should be even more happy, because Halo 2 has become Halo 1 Slayer Pro in matchmaking after the playlist update. What do guys think about the differences between Halo 1, Halo 2.1.0, and Halo 2.1.1?

Come on guys what do you think. I think this guy deserves an answer. After playing Halo 2.1.1, I like the new changes. The grenades are definitely more Halo1-esque! Also melees actually can kill people now. The only think I don't like it SWAT games types. I would welcome a SWAT variant of Shotgun's No Shields though.

If I was killed in halo 1 I knew why, and it was usually my fault. I made a mistake, I missed a key shot, ect. In halo 2 a lot of the time I die it is because I had no chance, the other guy had a br and I had an smg (mid range fight), the other guy had a sniper (long range) or the other guy was dual weilding and I had a br (short). While this may lead to more weapon selection and whatnot, I want my skill vs the other guys skill to decide who wins the fight, not who has the better weapon. The pistol was NOT the best long or short range weapon, it was just competative at those distances, so that you were never helpless. I also think it is very telling that the both the best halo 2 AND halo 1 players think halo 1 was the better game. Like the difference between baseball and softball (the non-competative, intramural/old man league type) Softball is easier, and sometimes more fun to play (always more fun to play for the unathletic/untalented majority), but baseball is the better game.

What people dont understand is that everyone spawned with a pistol and what it really did while being a good weapon it kept all the weapon whores in check. If you say pistol whore, everyone had one, so you cant whore it you can only be good with it. Shotty is better at close range, prifle is better at close range, ar was better at close range, sniper was better at long range, rockets....well there rockets. Pistol was best at mid range, and it allowed a skilled player to have a chance of beating that guy with the rockets, or sniper, or shotty ect. People who didnt play aganst good people didnt see this, and thats why a lot of them see no problem with halo2, they dont realize how halo CE was a sport, everyone was equal, and skill ruled all, not the weapons.

I wish there were more users like this guy. Bungie.net's user base is filled with yuppies and pistol-haters. Seriously, guys, I win more with an AR at close-up with the Plasma Pistol, or a Plasma Rifle, simply because I almost always go close-quarters. It all depends on distance and map size. You can't blame superior players who can wield the default gun better than you can. And if you're getting shot at, frickin' dodge or get behind cover! It's fun and not that hard! Even the pistol has limited uses, such as close combat or extreme distance. It's simply the most all-in-one gun in Halo, not a god gun. I'm sure all of you pistol-whore-haters are right at home in Halo 2, where skill-lacking players can spam you with two $#itty SMGs. If you're into balance, play Halo 1. If you have no sense of appreciation for the near-perfect weapon system that revolutionized console gaming, play Halo 2. It's that simple. The pistol is great for all-around head-punching, but its effects are only maximized in open areas. I get more kills with grenades than anything else. Honestly, Halo 2 is the most flawed game I have put 50 bucks down for. It lacks the visceral qualities of its predecessor. The Battle Rifle is NOT the pistol- each shot doesn't nicely link with the next one for automatic fire. If you guys diss the M6D ever again, you should know that what you're saying not only indicates your lack of skill or adaptive ability, but also insults the core gameplay of Halo 1. The old pistol is a frighteningly perfect incarnation of balance in an FPS. The only blemish in Halo 1's history is it being followed up by such a crappy game. Screw you all, pistol-haters.

Yes I'm a fan of both. I like both for different reason, but I think I am the first person to find fault with Halo 1. When we used to play System Link on H1, it would always turn into a pistol sniping, shotty wielding fest. People would pusposefully run to these weapons just to win. Now in Halo 2, there are many different ways to fight, and the shotty was powered down to keep clumping shotty wh0r3s from ruling a board. Also, no more pistol, which everyone knows was overpowered, even if they don't want to admit it. The new diversity of weapons and dual wielding feature enable people to fight many different ways, instead of the cliche shotty and pistol combo. I think that Bungie did good by Halo 2, by reducing cheapness by the balancing out the weapons and adding more variety to the first games meager selection. What do you guys think? And if you are just going to complain about Halo2, please don't post, I want this to be a constructive criticism/suggestion/support topic, not a bon fire like many other topics have turned into.

Yeah, I mean, I figured that out the first time I played Halo 2. Lockout. Most fun game I have ever played in my life, because it was so...exciting. A guy in front of you, and guy behind...not long range sniping, even though that took skill...just of a different sort.

Funny how people say "Those that are bad complaine about the pistol and enjoy Halo 2."

Well I'll tell you all now, I was an expert with the M6D and I hate it. It was a pity that everyone used it instead of using something else (besides the M90, M19SSM, and the SRS99C S2 AM). I'm gald Bungie fixed that problem. And oh yeah, I love both games. I just hate the M6D and the whores that use it.
