If you plan on living a full life*, there are some books that you need to read. They're great for nerdy gifts and stuff.

Feel free to add on to this list:
* Animal Farm - George Orwell
* Cannery Row - John Steinbeck
* Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
* Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
* The Invisible Man - H. G. Wells
* The Time Machine - H.G. Wells
* War of the Worlds - H.G. Wells
* The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide - Douglas Adams**
* Halo: The Fall of Reach - Eric Nylund
* Halo: The Flood - William Dietz
* Halo: The First Strike - Eric Nylund

*: Don't take that seriously. Seriously.
**:This is actually a collection of the following books:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Life, the Universe, and Everything
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
Young Zaphod Plays it Safe
Mostly Harmless
So you can buy those separately if you can't find the collection.

Anyway, those were just some books I read in the past year that I found particularly good. Feel free to add books on. I'll be reading 1984 and Catch 22 next, if anyone's wondering, then I'll go on to any suggestions that were made here.

So uh.. these make good Christmas presents I guess, too.

"My knee is bleeding, can I have a bandaid?" "Today its your knee, and in 10 years it'll be your wrists, why are you making this my problem?"

Do this again and I'll brand your ass with the banning prod

The Tom Clancy books look really good to.

I've read Fahrenheit, War of the Worlds and all of the Hitchhiker books. They are all great. I plan on getting a Halo book(s) over the holidays.

If you liked Fahrenheit 451, you'll probably like Brave New World. It's easily in the top 3 best books I've ever read.

Don't forget Starship Troopers by Heinlein...it's completely intelligent and thought provoking, totally unlike its Hollywood bastardization.

The Sector General series by James White. Humans and aliens coexisting with one another without fighitng each other...in fact this is about a giant cross species hospital where human and alien alike go to get treated. It's a pleasant and thoughtful series with a rich cast of characters. Some of the gags are priceless.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Personal favorite, great example that scifi can be about characters.

Chung Kuo, by David Wingrove. Earth is has been ruled by Chinese for hundreds of years with cities that spanning continents. Yet there are forces at work looking to undermine that. It's a fresh and rich take on sci fi. I've only completed the first book on the series. You can't really tell who to root for...people whose cause you might support can be completely despicable. Be warned though...first volume alone is about 1000 pages. It's fairly easy to read once you get used to it and not as bad as slogging through an omnibus version of Lord of the Rings (all the books of series packed into one volume...just like Tolkien intended till his editors said no).

A for some non sci-fi, White Fang by Jack London. Vicious but still engaging. This is no book about Lassie.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Kurt Vonnegut- Sirens of Titan.

That book is so good. And weird. But mostly good.
