Our forums were once a place where we could meet like-minded individuals who were as eager as we were to go play some Halo on Live. We were all united and few people ever felt left out. Now, so much has changed. Where once there was unity and as sense of belonging, there is only anger, jealousy and grief. Peoples' maturity is judged based on age and I've seen all over the forums, people being called an over-zealous fanboy who spends their life in their parent's basement, never had a girlfriend, etc... So much hatred and envy accumulating on each thread. I have seen things only getting worse and I want to know that there are like-minded individuals out there who feel that things need to change for the better.

I believe there is a simple solution to this problem. We should all just agree to disagree. If you don't like the game, just keep it to yourself or go play something else. As for people that bring someone's alleged personal life into this, just leave it out. No need to get personal. Bungie created these forums so that we would have a place to show off crazy ideas or stunts that we pulled off in the game. They created it so that they could hear the voice of the people, not our arguments about our personal lives. Just leave them where they belong and use the forums as they were meant to be used.

Please select a response stating whether or not you agree with me on this and please also refrain from flaming and/or insulting others on this thread. We're an online community and I believe it is time that we act like one.

Pleae leave any comments here.

You think the people who possess so much "hate" will just suddenly agree to stifle their opinions? And even if that were to happen, you expect everyone to be chummy with each other despite their obvious disagreements? All that would happen is that it would build up, until it explodes, and then the -blam!- hits the fan, and breaks the fan.

Let the people sort themselves out. If they are stalwart in their opinions, they will join up and befriend those who share similar opinions, if they're willing to concede a truce, they can befriend whomever they chose. The decision is their's though. You can't just force people to not share their opinion, not to stand by them, and befriend those they do not like.

Both something has to be done, and it will sort its self out. I agree, that the fourm has really gotten out of control. The only reason, people do this is the fact of being anoymous. Which makes them feel they will not be punished.

To handle this matter:
Achilles idea, that he posted. Because it will teach people that the internet has more punishment then they think.

It will also sort its self out(which it always will), as more people get older, but there will still be immature people on the fourms.

He's not talking about the opions of people. He's talking about the things that don't matter and don't need to be said. Ever heard of the saying "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all"? You'r right you can't force peoples opinion."Welcome to bunge.net, you have no rights, play nice."

Something does need to be done, but how do you go about telling other people to "Play Nice"? I am sure those who have had Xbox Live since the the start have noticed this change occure more rapidly then what it use to be. I remember back when Xbox Live was so new and fresh that most people were to shy to even talk. Now however it seems you can go just about anywhere and hear someone screaming at the top of their lungs into the Mic just to get on everyones nerves. I understand that they paid for Xbox Live too, but no one deserves all the harrassment that is in todays gaming; Name Calling, Cheating, -S- Harrassment b/c of gender. Its almost like you can't play random matches anymore to have fun it must be with friends that you know won't stress you out to the point of insanity.

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

Its the anonymity that gets to people. They feel there are no real consequences since they aren't talking to your face, all the other members are to them is text on a page, or a voice on the TV screen. People need to learn how to respect those who are not in the same room, and realize that we are people just as much as they are. If a guy walked into your room and decided to call you several profanities, label you and stereotype you would you just ignore him and act as if he wasn't there? Or would you be offended? Would you dare do that to someone yourself? I really doubt it.

In the end its just members running their mouths off because they can. They have the opportunity to go against the grain and throw the good-to-shoes act out the window and be the badass. All I have to say is stop being idiots and be yourselves, but not at the expense of other members. They deserve as much respect as you.

Of course, it might just be my Christian mentality saying this, since one of the Ten Commandments is love thy neighbor as thyself.

The forums are still approaching equilibrium from the sudden arrival of Halo 3. All will sort it self out in the coming months.

I'm glad to know that there are people who see the problem at hand. Thank you and keep giving your opinions. Unlike some threads, here is where I will not stand for people being negatively criticised so feel free to voice your opinion. Just take into accounts how others will react and please refrain from flaming this thread.
Now, then a couple people have asked me how I plan to go about doing this. If this thread get momentum, eventually others will see it and know that they have nothing to lose for standing up for themselves and taking a higher path. The most likely reason is a matter of peer-pressure. Since so many people on the forums don't seem to act their age (or in some cases, act just the opposite) newcomers feel that that is the attitude of the times and join them. What this thread is supposed to do is show them that there are other ways to become a part of the community and still be respected. To shorten this long post, all it would take to help this thread do it's purpose is if people just do a random act of kindness here or there. Maybe help out that guy who doesn't seem to understand the forums instead of ignoring or even insulting him. Eventually these things can be passed on from person to person and the forums are slightly better than before. Granted, some people for one reason or other will try to derail this but hopefully by then, we'll have enough people that it will hardly matter.

Having only months ago celebrated my two wonderful years on this site, I'm going to play the role of the old, wizened, Recon-esque member and say...

The site has always, and will always, have people who are just plain jerks. There will also always be people complaining about the jerks. If you just settle down, realize its an Internet forum and have some fun, you'll be fine.

Just ignore anyone who acts contrary to what you would like them to. Annoying people move on when they realize they are no longer annoying you.

It's not just here, either, it's anywhere on the internet, and since it's the internet there are no consequences. People will always continue to say whatever comes to mind, regardless of who it effects and what impression they make on people, simply because they realize we're all just text on a computer screen. And since Halo 3 has been released, it's definitely to be expected, especially since Bungie encourages creating accounts on Bungie.net.

All we can really do is ignore the jerks and move on. But think of it this way: The "jerks" on Bnet are small compared to the true a-hole of internet, which some people here may or may not know. >_>

News? Podcasts? Machinima? Active forums? Competitions? Jaffa Cakes!? OMG!
Thee Warriors!

Best. Mod. Ever.

No one shifted the direction of the comunity this way, so I doubt anyone can shift it back.
It was a natural process, a simple case of people (most of whom are attracted by Halo) joining the forum in droves presuming the whole place is concerned with video games, carrying the agreesive, inconsiderate jargon once particular to Zanzibar forum across the entire community.
With the sheer number of people (The population of the Republic of Ireland) and in my opinion, the Eliteist manner in which people are ranked on video games these day, they arrive with certain expectations. That's the problem.
The best we can do? Set a good example, and try and direct them to the light (this of course eminating from somewhere about the words 'Unleash Ninjas'), but otherwise, let them be. We still have a stellar, active and damned awesome community here, so at least we have each other.

Bungie is the only forum that has reached this level of redundancy in its member contribution. Almost none of the 11 forums I have been to (save for one which is almost as high as bungie, maybe higher in its jerk rating) have this many spam replies or repeat topics.

... And some people need to improve their spelling and grammar, because, seriously, those guys annoy me... You know who I'm talking about we've all seen them...

  • 12.18.2007 3:33 PM PDT

It IS as bad as you think and they ARE out to get you.

We can just point out when they are being jerks and hope they listen. Other than that, there is not much that can be done.

Oh, certain browsers also automatically check for spelling errors (has helped me many times). As for grammar, they jut need to listen in English class.
