Okay to start of like the last 16ppl: if i repeat anything already posted......whups.

Props to Hikaru on the Intro to Sniping 101 for all the beginners out there.

Now to help w/ the not quite beginners.....
Tanks are mega-easy to take out, they're slow and have an exposed hatch just begging for a headshot to take out the driver. With a steady hand and some practice anyone should be able to take them out in one shot.

Warthogs and Ghosts are more difficult. The gunner seat is the easiest to dispatch, just aim for the space in the "blast shield" just above the gun turret (unless you can get a shot behing the shooter). Insta-Headshot. The passenger/driver seats are more trickey since you need to wait to see the side to shoot, since the windshield seems to deflect bullets.

I'm not gonna lie, the Ghost is a pain in the butt. Sniping them can be done from the sides or the back but you have to be quick or hope that the driver is distracted, or going after someone else. And you HAVE to lead the Ghost since it moves so quick. However, the best way to fix those is head on w/ plasma grenades^^.

As for some "Advanced" tactics:

The best way to Snipe is on the run. As in: get the Rifle, run around the level and shoot what you see. It takes mad quickness, and Look-Sensitivity 10 helps a lot. I normally don't stand still or in the same place very long when sniping.

Also, get very very very very good w/ the pistol. Keep it w/ you at all times. I can't stress how much that little gun helps when sniping turns into a small skirmish.

I think that's everything.....Active Camo helps, but that's a given, as is getting the Overshield. If I missed anything let me know :-o

You could also carry a Shiva nuclear warhead if you wanted to cover all your bases... This has probably been explained ad nauseum, but I don't think head shots are always the best course of action. Yeah, they're great and you look like a pimp doing it, but when you're playing highly skilled operators, it's very difficult to get a clean shot. You're more likely to miss while aiming at their head, and you'll be screwed if they're in pistol range. They'll just do an about face and put 3 in your dome. I've found that 2 quick torso shots are excellent. If your foe is scoping you, he'll be unzoomed after the first hit and an easy target for the coup de grace. Cheers!

The Part about hiding behind vehicles is good advice, i hid behind an overturned ghost on sidewinder, near the enemy base in the dark area at the edge of the map. and waited untill they all left the base to grab the flag and leg it. makes a great point to snipe them from as they run past you, that can make them think the shot came from the cliffs in front. (by the contrail angling upwards)

I practise sniping on MP lvls everyday. And im going to do that agin now :P
One thing as a sniper a good way to counter snipe snipers is to not aim for the head that unmakes thier scope and 1 more shoot theyre dead!

Taking on a tank is actually pretty easy if your a good enough sniper. first when taking on a tank get off the walls, rounds explode off the walls. most tanks charge at you full throtle firing off rounds as soon as there loaded. the driver is in the little hatch, under the start of the turret. it is a small target but the rounds will go through that small hatch for a head shot. so all you have to do if you have a tank charging at you is shoot the hatch

I cant say i liked your thread. Your sniper training isnt good enough. A much better way is to play MP by yourself, and tape the other three contoller's joysticks down and shoot the running spartans. Its more realistic b/c its actual in game MP. Plus the other spartans generally start to run faster (b/c of game settings) which makes for a more difficult shot. Your 350 meter shots at the covies just dont cut it. There body movements and body shapes are way different than that of a spartan MP.

Your battle field analysis is way too time consuming. Knowing all of that information is irrelivent to much of the MP experience. Its all going to change within the minute and your back at stage one, trying to figure out if a warthog is flipped or not... Pointless. You sound like you use cover too much. Again way too time consuming. While your waiting and analyising and waiting for the perfect unsuspecting kill, everyone else is getting more kills. Also more deaths, but more kills is where it counts. unless you die over and over again and you just plain suck, giving others lots of kills for the win. But no one plays like that anymore...

Again!, your stalk involves hiding and taking cover and going too slow. I can see how you might do this a couple times in a game, but No One and i mean No one is a lone sniper when it comes the MP. If you are, you will lose, b/c you cant snipe, hide, stalk, take cover, for the whole game and expect to win. I will beat you to it, by sniping, using the pistol, the rockets, plasma pistol and moving quick! The kill to death ratio might suck, but at least i win.

If you are seen when sniping, keep sniping, pull another weapon or run. Tryin to kill the guy closest to you, then the next guy and the next guy and then the guy after that. Thats not how it happens man. Just do whatever it takes to kill those -blam!-s who saw you and dont die. None of this kill this guy then this guy crap!

PS, if you dont have 3 controllers to tape the joysticks down in MP so you can practise, the next best thing would be to shoot your own men in SP. Getting ahead shot on your marines takes -blam!-in skill. Plus they shoot back at you! Think about it....

PSS, you totally forgot close range sniping?! When your in close range with your sniper out, dont swith man! -blam!-in shoot the spartan with the sniper without ZOOMING. Its a one to two shot kill everytime. Its more powerfull than any other gun (besides the RL) and it takes the least shots. It only fails in its aiming. i must agree shooting somone in close range with the sniper is hard, Practise Makes Perminent.

I am dissapionted that this became a sticky...I dont recommend to anyone, tryin HIKARUS TACTICS...

hey this is one of my favorite drills to do

steal the banshee in aotcr and fly up to the very top ledge that circles around the valley, stand there and then snipe out everyone at the bottom
here's the hard part, after everything is dead
make sure you have 4 frag grenades.
1- take a frag
2- throw it down toward the bottom
3- spin around
4- target it, and shoot it before it hits the ground

you will know when you hit it because the frag will ricochet off into a completely different direction while its falling
it helps to target things quickly and get a fast shot off, not that fast is always good with sniping but it helps if ur in a tight spot

You're dumb

some good pointers. i have one good way do deal with a sniper. one word TANK. if you can see the trail left by a sniper bullet and your faster. its a good way to see a sniper fly and it makes them really mad so they dont go with the sniper tactics much longer

Wow. You're a -blam!--blam!-.

OK first off I would like to say I’m sorry if I offended anyone with my over zealous statements in regard to the posts in this thread. This was originally posted as an individual thread because I was so infuriated by some of these posts and had so much to say I decided to turn it into its own thread that was shortly after banned for one reason or another. Anyway I did aside from my negative comments have a lot to say in regards to sniping for the benefit and enrichment of the halo community. Now that my thread has been banned and I have had time to cool off and revise my post here it is. All of my revisions to words I feel my have contributed to my banning have been removed and replaced. This has been denoted by *asteriks* around the word/phrase.

Time to add my two cents to what began as an excellent way for everyone to improve at sniping, but shortly after turned into a *frag*fest. :) Really, I mean if someone doesn't stop these guys I am going to *hurt* myself. I was originally going to take care of you *bad people* individually but this is just seriously getting out of hand so for your convenience I have decided to turn it into a new thread.

First and foremost. You all are *bad people*. lol, but seriously. Your *bad*ness knows no bounds. Some of these posts make me want to *hurt myself*. Lets start out with some superb examples of supreme *bad*ness at its finest followed by my initial response:

DISCLAIMER: NONE OF THESE POSTS HAVE BEEN ALTERED IN ANY WAY

Posted by: Otacon

Scince about 3 months ago I have never missed a headshot. How?
...
You watch your enemy move (if moving) Then slowly follow him with the sniper rifle. When your (crosshairs) get on his head. You fire. This is called the follow through method

Well the first time I read this *recalling initial reaction* I think actually I was so disappointed in this poor neglected misinformed specimen of the halo community that I actually went outside and tied one end of a rope around my *stuffed teddy bear* and the other end of the rope to the back of my riding lawn mower. Then I put it in gear and had one of my clan members/team-mates start the mower. I drug *the teddy bear* for like three city blocks before *it* eventually passed out from a combination of third degree burns and mild lacerations... Wow, remember kids just follow through with the headshot. Anyway moving right along...

i really must congratulate you on this more than awesome guide...im actually suprized at how many ppl dont know most of this...u left out vehicles, which are pretty easy. just go for the head

Wow. *head in hands* This post really helped me a lot.*extreme sarcasm* Anyway without further ado lets examine yet another prime example of uber*bad*ness.

Posted by: Avalanche3588

Hikaru, your guide to sniping is awesome. I did find though that you left out something I find helpful. When you snipe, you are normally on levels that are big.

Wrong. First you learn to stop-and-snipe on Gizzle then you learn how strafe-snipe on all the other levels. I'll talk more about this in a little bit, but first I would like to find an example of someone just making up stuff.

Posted by:silentstalker101
Posted by:ClearArmor

if your moving and your enemy is moving autoaim takes place. the cross hair sways with the person. If you are sniping and aren't seen, try walking back and forth and then take your shot

That only happens on single and it only works on a lower difficulty such as Easy or Normal and that won't help you get any better.

OK In this scenario Clear Armor is right and silentstalker101 is a *bad person*. Now are you starting to relate to my *dislike* for the *bad people*?

Now that we have that out of the way...um, you all are *bad people*. Really. All this useless *junk* about counter tank/ghost. Wow you guys make me feel leet. Why is this counter tank/ghost talk absolutely useless and blatantly *bad*? Well because only hardcore *bad people* play with ghosts and/or tanks. Seriously I'm not trying to just be degrading and act like I'm so much better than you *bad people*.... which... wait I am. HAAHAHHAHAHA Wow, I'm cool, but seriously that *junk* is useless because first no one who's anyone plays with ghosts/tanks and second no one who is anyone plays Sidewinder and/or Gizzle anymore, and third even if they did there would be no ghosts/tanks. I don't even know why I post on these forums because all I ever see is *bad people* saying stupid *junk* that they made up... then Frankie or someone eventually has to come in and clear up a dispute about something that is clearly stated in the manual. *hurting himself* OK If you got on XBC and joined a 2 vs 2 game (which is most prevalent on XBC right now) you would never see Sidewinder, Gizzle, Chiron, or Boarding Action. Why? Because no one plays those levels. Most elites prefer smaller faster paced levels. Currently the most popular level on XBC is Chill Out because dude, you really need to... And another thing you *bad people* need to get used to taking it *smooth*... no, well that too because its pretty *smooth* out there but I was saying you need to get used to playing Generic TS. For you *bad people* (which *none* of you) Generic TS is (loosely based) around the following gametype settings:

>50/100 kills to win *
>team play: yes
>max health 100%
>shields yes
>no respawn time growth
>no siuicide penalty
>weapon set: normal
>starting equipment: generic
>warthogs only
>other players on radar: no

*Don't tell me thats not possible you *really bad people*! I know. I’ts a modified gametype you have to acquire somehow (most commonly via memory card passed around at LANs) Anyway its nice for big games that otherwise go to fast.

Well anyway now that that’s out of the way, one thing that I always drive into the ground with sniping is backpack reloading. Especially for you guys that are not as good at... well... *are not that good*, and if you don't know what backpack reloading is you should consider *hurting yourself*, no but really backpack reloading makes such a big difference with guns with small clips ie sniper/rocket especially in close games when you don't have much time to reload to start with let alone after you add 16 people to the mix backpack reloading becomes essential.

I am (in the grand scheme of things) a decent sniper and I almost never attempt to sniper an elite who is returning fire. I think Evil Otto said it best (even though he was referring to campaign the concept still applies) in his Legendary Walkthrough of The Truth and Reconciliation when he said, “You will soon alert an Elite to your presence, making the sniper scope useless as he fires at you.” I would highly recommend switching weapons if someone is aware of your location and is returning fire. Chances are they are hitting you when you are trying to zoom in and you are panicking and even if you could stay zoomed in long enough to get a shot off you would probably miss because they will be strafing back and forth like no other too so if I was you I would just switch and attempt to out-pistol them.

For me the sniper rifle is about shooting the unaware enemy. I usually try to separate myself from the rest of my team when I am sniping. Ideally the other team will engage my team in fire while I snipe them from one side. I prefer to snipe from the side because I think it’s a lot easier than shooting someone direct on. See when sniping from the side you just aim for the leading edge of your target's head. Much easier. Also believe it or not (all you *bad people* out there) it’s a lot easier (as well as safer) to snipe when you are strafing. Like ClearArmor said when you are moving and your enemy is moving auto-aim takes place. When you stop moving completely its all you. This is why I prefer sniping on levels with flat non-organic platforms where I can strafe without my reticle fluctuating up and down in correspondence with the uneven terrain of Blood Gulch for example.

Oh and one last thing, I feel most people over use their 10x zoom. You don't hardly ever need 10x except maybe when your sniping all the way across Blood Gulch and no one plays that level anyway, so I usually find 2x much easier really. I don't even think the sniper rifle should come equipped with a 10x zoom. If anyone noticed they changed it to 8x on the PC version.

Well I've always been good at sniping...I have an affinity with guns in games and in real life (aiming). Everyone seems to have missed out that you need to feel the shot too. I don't need to zoom to take out a tank driver. It comes easily to me. If you stop to zoom your dead. If you move with 10x or even 2x zoom your very susceptible (vulnerable) from fast (i.e warthogs) vehicles. Always be aware. Reflexes are useful too. If I'm in the tank and someone shoots at me they better hope to have 2 good shots very fast because you'd be amazed how fast I can lock on and fire. If they're in a warthog however...why bother with a sniper rifle? unless they're not after you. Ambushing is more useful on a warthog. Jump out from hiding, throw grenade (plasma). Mop up rest with shotgun or frag grenade...

  • 09.13.2004 2:10 PM PDT
  • gamertag:

  • last post: 01.01.0001 12:00 AM PDT

Camping- A player staying in one spot for an extended period of time. The player is watching one general area and normally armed with a scope weapon. They wait for opponentns to walk by and then they shoot never moving from their spot aftterward. The average time(from my research in Halo games) that a camper will stay put, assuming he is not killed in this time, is 10 to 20 minutes. No joke either. Campers never move and if they do they just go to another spot to stay. Any stationary movement exceeding 30 seconds is camping.

There is another form of camping known as spawn camping.

Spawn Camping- Staying in the general area or within line of sight of the enemy spawn zone. Killing the opponent as they appear on screen not giving them a chance to run and counter.

As for the people that insulted myself and the guide.

Whatever. Your opinion matters not to me.

Thanks for the compliment but I was referring to multilayer “elites” as in people that are generally very proficient at Halo multilayer. An “elite” as originally defined by GTC (http://www.thegtc.com/halojargon.htm) is, “a player who times and can shoot very well. Has a firm grasp of the game and always shoots the right gun at the right time.”
