No, I think there are more important, fundamental needs of a fellow's man that must be met, and self-enlightenment should not be a priority, when famine, ignorance, and violence are rampant.

how can one hope to help others when one cannot help ones' self?

I'm not enlightened. I don't burn down houses or -blam!- people. But I volunteer at the old people's home. I donate money and old goods to charity. Is that enough? No, but it's better than doing nothing at all.

Enlightenment is over-kill, and in the span of one life time, I don't think you can say it's helping anyone else but the person seeking enlightenment, which seems awfully selfish to me.

As I said before, I don't want to talk about reincarnation, because we can't prove that one way or the other, but we can prove that you are born, and then you die. And I think it's important to help everyone that you can with that one life we know we all get.

You have on problem with the theory on happiness Obbi: it's relative. What might be enough for someone else, might not be for another. The relativity of it leaves it wide open for interpretation of what is and is not enough. In fact, the only people who argue that happiness can be increased through any superficial means are economists, who believe utility (happiness in a sense) is increased through the collection of material goods. (Cosmetics and styles, etc are included) The only excluded variable are beliefs. What makes you happy on a mental level. And no one can measure that except the individual.

The word "nirvana" means indescribable. This is a simple Buddhist equation.

Suffering = life
life = constant (you die, but eventually you are reborn)
suffering = bad

So, if suffering is life (you suffer when you live), and you're constantly stuck in the circle of life, then suffering lasts forever.

The goal of the buddhist is to finally die. It is to excape the circle of rebirth.

Funny you tried to use that math to prove it, because with the same logic, I can prove women are evil:
Girls = Money x Time

Time = Money
Girls = Money x Money = Money^2

Money is 'root of all evil':
So, Girls = (sq rt evil) ^2
Girls = Evil

Doesn't quite make complete sense in the real world now does it?

Oh christ, shut up, all she is doing is explain the fundamentals of a religion she may, or may not follow. Every religion can be torn apart, none more than christianity. Except when we do that it's called religious debate and is a closed topic. I mean nobody wants to hear about how big of a joke and a load of crap christianity is, so don't do it to other religions. Again bunch of hypocrites. MODS CLOSE THIS THREAD

You're quite off base with your assumption, but it's alright. It wasn't about religion it was about the essence of life as seens from a specific perspective. I wasn't debating religion and won't because, like you, I am not a believer. But I do know the difference between a hole in an argument and a solid point. You, sir, missed mine completely.

So buddism isn't a religion anymore? This thread is about buddism, and people have been bashing it the whole time. Your point was to put holes in what she said, which believe it or not, is buddist beliefs. That specific perspective is religious, therefore the thread should be locked. I missed nothing.

and what of Quang Duc, and the other buddhist monks that set themselves ablaze in protest of the vietnam war? did they do nothing? i think that your notion of buddhists being too selfish to concern themselves with the problems of the world, is a bit unfounded.

I fail to see how lighting one's self on fire conforms with the whole self-enlightenment philosophy. Unless they only did it for brownie points when they come back.

Ok, so you don't want them to do nothing, but when they do something you are not happy either. Let it go.
