you obviously have no clue what im talking about, and finite being the opposite of infinite means a limit, so either you used it wrong or you seem to think I did.

Wrong again. Tell me, how is it possible for a change to happen if time doesn't exist?

I understand that it is impossible for a change to happen if time doesn't exist, but is it possible for time to exist if a change doesn't happen? I would think not, becuase there would be no way to gauge time, but that's just a guess.

Can't anyone live with just existing any more? Must there be a reason for everything? We (Terrans) should focus on technologies that are emerging and will be emerging in the next few centures - later on, when we are at the level that our Gods are, we will understand. Of course, this sort of speculation is necessary because otherwise there would be no aspiration to develop any new technologies. Right now I'm most interested in nanotech. It could not only usher in a new age, but be the next step in human evolution if it is not constrained by the capitalism of the United States. How could economies survive if all you would need to construct anything are the blueprints?

You assumed what I meant by finite. Was I talking about space or time?

What is really confusing is that matter isn't created just transformed. So the molecules in your finger nail could have once been part of an orange, and before that a cat, and before that a shark.....

If there was a beginning, what was before that?

Uhh, nothing?
i cant understand how there could be "nuthing"
I think that by "nothing" he means indeterminate. Anything you try to imagine outside the time spanned by our spacetime continuum, we can't ever observe or interact with in any way whatsoever; it's outside the reaches of our universe. Whatever might be beyond our spacetime continuum might as well not exist. Our universe is limited to the space and time we are connected to- it's called the anthropic principle(I'm not sure whether it's the strong or weak, the reading was a while ago and my memory sucks...), though you might also know it as Occam's razor.

Yeah, this doesn't seem like a religious topic to me. I can only see how it can come into play if someone were to jump in and think that a higher force of something came in and did whatever people think or believe this higher force being did. Other than the actual topic at hand, I don't see how this topic could be errumm... worshiped...?? And anyway, why wouldn't it be okay to talk about space? Isn't Halo dealing with space and all?...

Anyway, I have an answer to something zobe was trying to say. You said scientist were trying to figure out if the universe was going to continue to expand or retract (collapsing in on itself). Well, it was actually just a few years ago I was watching on the Discovery Science channel (not religious channel) they were talking about this very subject. They even had Steven Hawkings on there. Anyway, they said they were sure that the universe in indeed an open universe (not closed) which means it will always continue to expand. And while this might sound like a good thing for the future generations... well... it would be if you didn't take black holes and the expanding sun into consideration. Now before you think about the sun giving out and no longer putting out heat or light, you should first consider that when it expands (as all stars do before they die) it will grow closer and closer toward Earth. This will increase temperature and eventually it would become so hot that life is unable to sustain itself. Then the only way to escape and possibly survive longer would be for people to travel to other planets away from the sun bringing along perhaps other living things such as plants for making oxygen and for food... and as the sun continues to expand, we continue to hop to other planets (or their moons). But eventually we won't be able to planet hop forever and we'd have to eventually burn up in the sun's heat. Now, if that doesn't kill us first, there is always the black hole that is located in the center of our milky way galaxy. Our black hole continues to suck up the milky way, and eventually, whether the sun has engulfed us yet or not, everything in the milky way including our solar system will be completely sucked up. Then the only way to escape that would probably be to travel to another galaxy. But hopefully for the future generations the technology will be advanced enough to travel these great distances. Especially between galaxies since they are ever drifting farther away from each other and into the ever expanding universe. Now, if life were to end even sooner than that, there are always meteors...

cheers,
Twisted Chains

Whoop. I didn't mean to imply that I think the universe is finite or not, I was trying to more clearly articulate my understanding and lack of understanding of what was being said. Either way, whether something's limited or not depends on what it is. I use "universe" for the set of all phenomena and concepts I could possibly affect or be affected by, all possible configurations of reality with which I am compatible. I personally don't understand completely the reasoning by which it is said that our spacetime continuum is finite in time and/or space, so anything I say in that context or any for that matter is supposed to be seen as hypothesis. I try at least not to limit myself to belief.

Eh...
When we start thinking about cosmology and stuff, it's just a matter of personal opinion whether it's religion-related or not. It's hypothesizing about fundamental stuff, like the very nature of causality itself. If you believe in some kinda God, you can just say that what science is striving for is some tenuous grasp of the means of creation and enjoy the fun speculation with the rest of us.

*looks confused*
If spacetime continues expanding forever, our biggest concern shouldn't be black holes. We would be worried about being drawn "into" a singularity within our continuum if spacetime were collapsing, because we'd be running out of space. If our space just continues expanding, I imagine big clumps of mass like supermassives eventually becoming an important food resource for us. Given infinite time and assuming we last long enough, we would just leave the galaxy before it finishes getting eaten just as we would leave star systems before they become uninhabitable. Of course, that's so far down the road we'd probably not be relying on star systems for habitation. Eventually, if spacetime keeps expanding, matter and energy would become rare commodities. A collapsed galaxy's mass would be a treasure trove of energy. Then again, we might learn to not depend on mass and energy by then. It's so far off we can't even begin to imagine what our concerns would be... We might look back at ancient memories from when we sat in massive bodies, probably of some lightweight carbon macromolecules or something and sucking matter and energy from stars that only lasted a few billion years and laugh at how we were worried about heat death...

In all logical sense, it isn't possible. We shouldn't even be here.
