I cannot recall the exact feeling, but I do know that when I finally got past the first few waves and back to the "elevator" I was thrilled.............................and then it descended. At that point, even as a 41 year old guy (back then), my heart sank and I pretty much resigned myself to repeated horrible deaths, and shivered..............I wondered if this level would ever end or just be the end of me!
I am not sure why so many people hate the CE flood levels. Personally, I love the Library because you get to kill so many things, and still have to be strategic about when to push forward and when to backpedal like mad! Yes it seems like it never ends, but the different waves with different levels of weaponry are alot of fun. The shotgun is my favorite weapon in CE, the look, the "feel", the sound effects and the standing around doing nothing motions are the best in the game, and this level is ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL shotgun!
343 GS is not my favorite level, because it is 90% flood, with only a few Covie thrown in for flavor. But I do think that they made the transition from battling just the Covies to now having to battle both (and wondering which is the greater threat) very smooth, and added a layer to the game that kept it from becoming boring.
Now in 2, I HATE THE FLOOD LEVELS! Especially with either Sputnik or Mythic, the things pack even a bigger punch or are signifigantly harder to kill. They seem faster, more frenetic and do not behave in that similar a manner to those in CE (which does not really make sense if you think about it, what would cause them to act so differently?) Halo 2 is much more a mid to long distance game, not nearly so much up close and personal as CE. Unfortunately they took the two best up close weapons for dealing with the flood (shotty and mag) and watered them way down. The sword is fine, but since you have to be right on them to use it that means you get overwelmed by groups.
In CE 343 GS allowed the game and story to transition from Covie to Flood, this kept the game from becoming tedious as all you did was battle Covie. In 2 they used the Arbiter to try and make another tedium eliminating transition, but since it was not that different being the Arb vs the MC it did not do the same positive thing for the game, you were just a different character doing the same things, not the MC doing different things.
It's all about the MC you see!
