Okay, I apologize beforehand if anything in this post is incorrect. I'm not an expert on bans, computer systems, etc.; so if this is just pointless, I'm sorry.

I was recently on the Halo 3 Forum, and I noticed a number of posts by a person called "xFallenx," who was being generally annoying and saying how CoD4 is in his opinion better than Halo 3. I was just waiting for a mod or someone to ban him (or her, but I'm assuming this person's a guy), when it came to me that he could just make a new Windows Live ID, and post from that. I want to know if it's possible to ban not only a Live ID, but also an IP address or computer from Bungie.net (if this doesn't happen already). This is a somewhat similar concept as banning an entire Xbox 360 console, as opposed to merely the gamertag. Thanks for your patience and input!

It's possible to ban an IP address, but it's so easy to change your IP address that it wouldn't do anything and many people have a dynamic IP which changes your IP address every time you go on the internet.

What's worse about IP bans is that IP addresses aren't always fixed; some providers share them out, assigning customers available ones when they log in and then re-assigning each when a customer logs out. So you'd have to ban a range of IP addresses, and that runs the risk of banning a bunch of people who don't even know the culprit.

We have... other ways. (Details of which I wouldn't be at liberty to disclose even if I knew them... me am no coder.)

Just because someone is giving his opinion (CoD4 is better than H3 for example) doesn't mean that they deserved to be banned because of it.

And yet what does that have to do with H3? Nothing. Often it's just a plea for attention, and with the level of drama already present in the forums the addition of more attention-seekers makes the forums worse.

Quite true. It just sounded to me like the OP thought the poster should get banned just for stating his opinion, not because he posted something off-topic.

It would also depend on the what the thread is about too, right? If someone posted a thread that Halo 3 is the greatest game ever, would it be off-topic to disagree and say that another game is better? I don't believe so. But that's me.

I do agree with you though Anton, about it usually being a plea for attention. It doesn't help the forum at all, then again, can anything really help that forum?

Uh oh, better tell my brother that. He might one day choose to spam the forums (For whatever reason) and then get banned, but then I'll get banned too.

*runs to tell brother*

Even though the soul banns the other accounts, it is very, very easy to get around this, and create a new account.

Thanks everyone for the answers, especially the mods, since I know they're busy patrolling the forums =)

P.S. Sorry for the confusion involving xFallenx. I didn't mean that he should be banned for stating his opinion, but rather the fact that he made many different topics, each with different, unrelated titles saying the same thing. It was just obnoxious.

MAC addresses, yes.

While I don't know for sure, but the UAA (Universally Administered Address) should be able to be read by a server, and banning this would prevent a PC from logging on nearly permanently. UAA MAC addressess act as a sort of serial code for network components, and are individually unique. While one could simply buy a new network card, this would be a huge hassle to the consumer, so it's not a realistic concern.

Again, I don't know if this could happen or not, but it'd be worth looking into.

Keep in mind, we don't all have personal computers. There's be a whole lot of public computers banned from bnet like that.

Perhaps...

A last resort option, then.

MAC bans would be bad, since you could be banning an entire room full of computers. IP bans are the only mildly effective way to ban people. There is no really surefire way to ban, there are only good ways and bad ones. IP bans have been the best so far IMO.

lmao I'm always surprised when I can access bnet from any public computer, being school (great time-waster whn you're done on the laptops and they've blocked all the game sites and your friends are all "WTF I'm so bored" and you can be all "Haha lamerz I'm on bnet!") library, etc. There are so many sites that have put up blanket bans on bnet it's almost frightning.

I was just thinking something, and was wondering if someone could clear this up for me. If you are blacklisted, can you still download games and maps from Bungie.net? Or are you only unable to post them? Because I think, like Recon said, that this would add a bit more value to your account, if you were unable to download anything from Bungie.net.

Actually I heard intel was developing new CPU's where gaming companies will ban the CPU and not accounts... I'll see if I can find the story.

Are you guys kidding? No, really? Are you? As a programmer, and all-round "computer guy" (regrettably...), I think being able to ban CPUs is just utterly retarded... I'm not even gonna break down why that's impossible, or at least null.

Just wow, you silly, silly people.
