One day, I was showing my friend (cursed with dial-up) some screens (including the 3D one) of Halo 2. While showing him renders of the battle rifle, he made a discovery. He pointed out that the BR looks insanely similar to the F rench FAMAS assault rifle. (minus the scope on the BR) Could this have been inspiration for Bungie and the Battle Rifle? He also said that the original AR looks like some other gun, but I haven't seen it yet. Anyone else see the resemblance?

Bullpup weapons are exceedly more common as this design has many advantages. It also has a lot in common with the new Heckler and Koch XM-8 stylistically.

It does look very similar to the first version of the FAMAS, the one that didnt have the full handle trgger guard. I dont know if you were asking which gun the Assault Rifle form Halo 1 was, but Ive actaully gone over a bunch of pics of firearms from around the world seeing which ones Bungie possibley got some inspiration from, and the AR looks very similar to the Fabrique Nationale F2000. The F2000 is the assault rifle thats used in Splinter Cell. It has a similar thumb-hole design that was used on the FN P90. If only the AR in Halo had a 40mm grenade launcher attachment.

Another thing, the front end of the new SMG looks very similar to the front on the Heckler & Koch, the HK gun doesnt use caseless ammo like the SMG in the game.

SB-117

Bungie said that all human weapons in the game are designed to be recognised by the player so that he/she doesnt feel unfamilar with how they work and such.

Where as the covenant weapons, are just designed to be crazy and innovative. So that the player is UNFAMILAR.

Everyones seen the famas right? be it metal gear or rainbow six so I'm guessing its all to do with it being familiar to the gamer seeing as everyone recognises the shape and functions of a FAMAS
