And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

In general, I try to discourage people from using analogies to make their point. Only a tiny handful of people on this site are able to effectively use them in a way that actually fits, and the rest of the time the analogy just confuses the issue -- both in the poster's mind and the minds of anyone who reads the analogy.

True, but confusion promotes conversation. It is also one of the better tracks on Substance Disc Two.

True. Just ask evilcam about that. I'm starting a new group soon BTW.

Wow, I just relized bungie.net is a communist dictatorship. We have the dictators with absolute power. We have the people, all equal and claseless with no power of their own. Well, except revolution. The people always have that power. Maybe we should try to be more of a democratic communism.

And yet, Ultima, this issue has nothing to do with what you think, or what I think, and everything to do with what Bungie Studios thinks. You already know what Bungie thinks, as you undoubtedly have read the Terms of Use and Code of Conduct. You can anologize and moralize your position all you wish (I once held similar beliefs such as this for the same reason, but I later came to a conclusion must different for reasons of my own.), but it won't change the fact that those two previously mentioned sources, as well as unofficial claims of our site Administrator.

Don't misunderstand my words as saying that your claims and backings are worthless; nothing gets done if no one challenges things. Just trying to point out why I believe that this just isn't an important issue, and that we should focus on much more effective things.

Then why the heck are any of us posting in this forum section? If our opinions don't matter why is this part of the board even here? Bungie cares about what you think, I think, what everyone thinks, if they didn't we wouldn't have a search feature nor community contests, or even groups for that matter.

Anyways, whether this feature is important or not, all I am asking for is acknowledgment of my side, which you have given. I post in these threads not to argue what I think is right, but to give a different point of view on the situation, to get people to think past their first impressions. I also do it to challenge myself to validate a less viable option.

Who cares if they lock their own threads? If it does prevent a rebuttal there, than you can simply PM them. Its their own choice to lock themselves in. It really doesn't hurt anyone. A good way to keep this from being abused, though, would make the lock unreversible. If you lock the topic, its locked and thats that. Or we could even get a vote system, where if after... say 10 votes, if 80% of the people vote to lock then its locked.

Well that system may be abused and minorities may get shut out if that voting system gets put in place. MLG kids could gang up on us custom gamers and then we would get shut out every time we make a topic. Plus, I wouldnt want some of the trash on here to be able to lock my legitimate topics.

while were on the subject of possible improvements or ideas for the site, I have a few that other sites do that I would like to see. Really the only thing I'd like to see is a ticker that tells you how many people are currently viewing one of the various forums.. I often refrain from posting in other treads, such as optimatch, simply b/c I dont think people will see it.. Actaually thats the only thing I'd like to see. I think the forum layouts and interfacing are simple and perfect. this one addition of user ticker would really tie the forum life together..

PS maybe some stats too such as : # of posts per day for the whole site, and individual users. Also stats showing avg number of posts per day/ per forum, per hour, day week month, year. etc.. . A graph showing when people are on the site the most, days weeks, months years.. Stats are always fun.. :0))

Maybe we should try to be more of a democratic communism.

You really, really wouldn't like that. Honest.

Maybe a small forum could self-moderate, with members acting responsibly towards others in the main, but in a forum this size the, er, "tomfoolers"* would easily undermine the well-intentioned. Systems get "gamed" all the time, the more sophisticated the system the easier it is for the unscrupulous to manipulate the results; especially in an online forum where the consequences of failure when gaming the system are far less drastic than jail time or angry mobs.

Keeping a nice, simple, hopefully-enlightened tyranny puts a limit on how much the system can be gamed.

-- Steve wishes it weren't so, but wishing don't make it real.

* "tomfoolers", obviously, is a noun for "perpetrators of tomfoolery". Because the possible meaning of "foolers of Tom (Achronos)" is a null set with no possible candidates. (grovel, grovel)

I don't think you understand what democratic communism is. You may be confusing democracy with capatilism. Capatilism is a form of market, communism is a form of market, economy . Democracy is a form of goverment.
When we combine democracy and communism we get something new.
Democratic communism at a state level has never been achieved. Only communist dictatorships ( ie: yugolsavia, china, USSR ). So it has not been very well explored.

If bungie.net was a democatic communism ,rather than the communist dictatorship it is now, the moderators would have just as much power as before but the members would have the power to elect their own moderators or nominate their own moderators.

This idea would lead to catastrophic failure with the virtual walls of Bungie collapsing all around us in one huge cataclysmic implosion the likes of which we've never seen. Like Steve said, this idea is nice in theory, but it'd be more like Lord of the Flies than a coherent and successful communist/democracy (whatever that means....oxymoron?)

Electing our own moderators would be a popularity contest. So instead of qualified individuals being hand picked by Achronos and the other master forum ninjas, we'd have a bunch of 13 year olds from the Flood policing the forums.

There is no one more passionate and involved in the success of B.net than Achronos. Why? Because it's his job. If B.net fails, then he fails and he'd lose his job and have to sell his cushy condo in Bellevue with the gym he never uses.

I'm confused. It's a dictatorship, but what's communist about it at all? Communism would imply that you have any power or rights, even in theory, which you don't.

No no no, see ,this is were people do not understand communism. Communism means all people have equal rights and power and there are no class or caste distinctions. The only people with more power are the governers.

We all have equal rights here on b.net. The only ones with more power are the governers or moderators. It is not a dictatorship because of their superior power over the common people but only because they are not elected,. Americans have been bred to hate and fear communism. The only thing you should hate and fear are dictatorships and tyrants.

i know that the population here is too immature for democracy but it could work on a smaller scale, perhaps in private groups.

Who cares if they lock their own threads?

I do. This simply isn't going to happen.

Locking own threads was explained to be a bad Idea, I agree with Achronos on this one.

People are actually punished for bumping at all. Unfortunately, we don't have the manpower to go after ever single one.
Then get more people, IMO.

You say that like it is easy. It isn't. And numbers aren't really the big problem - it is coverage. And numbers only help that so much before the numbers get it in the way.

As Achronos said, it isn't easy to get more people. these people need to be very, honorable I guess you could say, to actually do their job properly and not simply be given Moderator powers when they will just go mad with power.

A report post button would be VERY useful. Even if abused, in the end its always the moderators choice to lock the thread. Each member should also be limited to one report per thread.

The biggest thing I hate about this forum isn't the stupid members, its all the realists who instantly assume any helpful feature would be abused so absolutely. There are ways of deterring abuse, but never ways of taking it completely away. Merely allowing us to post is allowing for abuse by the members.

And about the thread no longer being your thread. Its your words, your text, you decided to post the content. ITS YOUR THREAD. Its like saying the instant you cook food and put it on the table, its no longer the food you made, but everyones food. Sure, everyone eats from it, but you have every right to take it away from them since you made it.

A feature to allow a better way for the membership to report problem content is on its way, along with appropriate controls and tomfoolery to slap down the abusers.

And no, once you post, it isn't "your thread". The post remains yours, but the thread itself is a community discussion, public. Just as group founders aren't considered special, topic starters aren't special here. All you did was start the conversation.

Good, I would love an easy way to contact moderators, at the moment the Mod finder isn't working and there is a bad topic in the Halo 3 forum. ohwell, I hope a mod comes along soon.

It does work with smaller groups. Group founders and leaders are either appointed formally or most of the time assumed, and as long as they don't abuse their power the group runs smoothly.

In fact, in my main group about 80% of our members have mod priveledges and it works awesome. Just takes a little maturity and trust.

Americans have been bred to hate and fear communism.

Believe it or not, that is quite insulting. Anti-communism was a Cold War byproduct, and rightly so. However, in my generation, jokes about "Commies" are about as far as it goes, and even then they're going quickly out of fashion.

Further more we aren't "bred to hate and fear communism". That's just foolish. We do, though, get a pro-democracy education, but that's a Pride-in-one's-country thing.

Don't do that again.

.

I don't even know if that's true anymore. I think our public education system does a good job of teaching and discussing all forms of government. It's not like the oppressive McCarthyism era of the 40's and 50's where we were taught that other forms of government were not only wrong, but evil.

But I digress.........how bout dem' suggestions!
