Of course they are. Answer to your question. For further answers, read the Halo books and play Marathon.

Maybe... but the thing is, Marathon involved reading, a not very popular idea in the gaming community. Durandal and the other AIs would communicate to you through ports where you would have to read communiques and observe maps. It wasn't as straightforward as Halo, so it'd be tough on people who like easy and single-path games.

Heck, people would love a remake, it's just that Bungie's working fully on the Halo series right now.

Marathon isn't all story.
typically your vastly out numbered by your enemy.
Lack of ammo is ALWAYS a problem and has to be used sparingly.
Tactical retreats to a more easily defended area are also critical.
Lastly, the levels and hallways are big, and quite eerie as you think "I've passed that dead phfor body 10 times now"

and seriously, nothing scares the living sh!@t out of you more than the sound of a s'pht firing at you when u have no life. especially on total carnage when the bolts follow you (i swear i had one of those follow me across half a map once when i had virtually no life once)

Halo is a SPIRITUAL successor to Marathon, and no more. While there are many similarities, there are many more differences..
