Elitism! Wort Wort Wort!
Just kidding -- joke from another thread. To be honest, I actually see no problem with this idea as a fundamental matter. The only problem is that, at least in my view, its not particularly necessary. I have never been so curious to know what was underneath a "-blam!-" as to wish that there was no swear filter. Moreover, it's not the kind of thing that even needs to be turned off in order to understand a discussion. Obviously the filter can get in the way when using certain words in-context and for good reason, such as discussing the evolution of man from Forerunners in the Halo 3 Forum, and referencing "-blam!-"-sapiens. But a clever poster can get around those certain words that get blammed out pretty easily by describing the thing without using the particular offensive word.
Sometimes it's not even necessary to do that, as a "blam" can be extremely easily deciphered based on the context. For example, if talking in the Flood about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas's confirmation hearings, and Anita Hill's allegations of -blam!- harassment, everybody knows what word you were trying to say that was blammed out.
In a larger context, except for the broad types of examples given above, I have to wonder what kind of discussion could actually benefit from having the blam filter turned off. I mean, I suppose one could attempt to have an intellectual discussion about the origins of the "F" word (actually that's an extremely interesting discussion -- check out Wikipedia), but considering the maturity level here on BNet, I doubt that it would stay either interesting or intellectual for very long. Especially if the blam filter were turned off.
To be honest, I think that the blam filter adds a level of playfulness and fun to BNet, and I don't mind it being in place. Although I would not mind having an option to turn it off, I don't really see a need for the web team to spend time implementing this option when there are so many more useful things that they may think of or be working on.
In sum: I'm neutral on this one, folks.
