A few years ago when I was about 13. My Mum, Sister an my Aunt went to visit an abandoned village in the middle of no where. A village called Wharram Percy, probably the most well known deserted medieval village in England. The whole experience scared me out.
So we got there and it was already close to sun set, mid summer so about 7pm. The walk down towards the village took a while, it was extremely quiet and airy. We got to the village and the sight of the old reconstructed house with the ruined church behind wasn't welcoming. Behind the house, grave stones dotted the the area. I can't remember how old they were, but seeing graves at dusk, in a creepy old village, overlooked by the scariest church EVER... wasn't fun.
So we went inside the church ruins. A huge medieval door, that now barely fitted where it belonged. This explains better then I do. The floor was uneven, I could hear the wind gushing through the pane less windows. My Mum then told my that one of my uncles camped the night in the archway there for the lulz. 'What...' Picturing myself in that situation, I could have died.
We carried on looking around at the graves, noticing how little daylight was left. We walked pack up to the house, this time having look through the windows and taking a closer look. They'd reconstructed some of the room, an old stove and table with possessions covered in years of dust lay there. Just as we're peering in we start hearing yelping from the forest next to us.
Quick bursts of 'someone' screaming, then a faint bell sound beyond the screams. I looked at my sister in disbelief, she looked as scared as me. It didn't help that my Mum and Aunt also panicked... So we got the -blam!- out of there. We're practically jogging at this point back up into the forest from were we came away from the yelping.
Now it was completely dark. Our backs turned to that 'thing' that was screaming, along withe the bizarre ringing sound. The walk took at least a good 15 minutes. I knew each of us was -blam!- themselves. With only the forest behind us and tall growth next to us, we slowly got out of there. The path took us through a field. A tractor sat there about 100 meters out. Just sat there as a silhouette in front of the twilight sky.
We couldn't have been more glad to see our car in the entrance car park. I noticed how our car was completely alone, when atleast two others were next to it when we got there. Where was the other visitors... The thought probably didn't linger too long. We all got in the car, me and my sister in the back. We sat there for a few minutes... silent. Looking into the forest in front of us. The trees were long and slender, like tall bamboo. At this point it was completely dark, we could hear the wind through the trees. Wondering if what ever was screaming out to us was now only a few feet in front on the car. My aunt only decided to turn the car on after all this played through my head. Lights, music... we got the -blam!- out of there.
Looking back on the road, all I could see was a huge forest. As if the village itself was hidden to the world.
Scariest -blam!- ever, the scariest movie in the world couldn't capture what I felt then. A few days later, logic came to play. The yelping was probably a fox crying out, the ringing sound, which sounded like a bell. Probably a farmer calling whatever animals he has.
That didn't change what happened though. I was scared that evening. Seriously -blam!- scared.
