I love my PS2. It's not the most powerful system on the market right now (the PC is, guys. Not the Box.) but it's pretty damned cool. The backwards compatability automatically makes it better than the Nintendo systems, and gives it an extreme advantage over the Xbox. Not to mention all the great games on it... Final Fantasy (most of them), Grand Theft Auto (all of them, including 1, 2, and the special addition London one.), Gran Turismo (guess what? All of 'em), Twisted Metal (all), and several exclusive RPGs (Lunar, Xenosaga, Drakenguard, Kingdom Hearts, and [I think] Vagrant Story to name a few).
I also must tell you that I've never had a problem with my PS2. I have an flip top and the hard drive. It has never not read a disk unless the disk was extremely scratched, and it still runs after being played for several hours straight, left on for days, droped, and rained on. I've never, ever had to send it in and I've only cleaned it three times since I got it (1999). Good system, me thinks. I believe you just had poor luck with yours.
But I could talk about the virtues of PS2 all day. Let me just say that I have several systems, including a PC, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Nintendo, and Super Nintendo, all of which I love. My PS2 is the only one I've never had trouble with, although I haven't had much with the Xbox, either. Well, there was that yellow/orange/green light thing, but it hasn't done that in a while... And it really didn't do anything the effect the games in anyway, so I don't think anything is wrong with it...
Final verdict: I love my PS2, and I think I'll keep it.
