I'm watching a special on PBS that is about the String Theory. It's quite interesting, and also very strange, so to speak. Essentially the theory says everything in the universe, even the universe itself are composed of intensely small particle of energy, or strings. I find the theory fascinating, yet a bit far-fetched. Does anyone here understand the basics of this theory, and could they explain it well to me, so I may understand it better?

There's a UFO special on Sci-Fi about Rendelsham. These shows are interesting.

Can our world just be a big Sim city. Or the Sims 2 somehow?

  • 12.21.2004 5:19 PM PDT

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

I'm not entirely sure if String Theory could be simple. All I know is that it accounts for a seventh dimension (I hope they mean parallel universe with this) and I want to go there.

In simple terms: It's states that everything in all the universe is connected and made up by one tiny string.

Well String Theory is meant to be a simple unification of the physics of the universe.

string theory is as close to reality as a theory comes

  • 12.21.2004 5:55 PM PDT

I can think of numerous words to describe string theory, all of them blammed by this forum.

So they've tested this and it's widely accepted, and more importantly, answers a wide range of questions?

I really don't think so. It sounds less like a theory and more like an "idea" or a "hypothesis", and a bad one at that.

Wrong. I'm not even sure about the accuracy of what I'm about to say(lots of advances have been made since it was established), but only matter is composed of those three particles.

However, I am still pretty skeptical that such is the case, what with Bohr's Model being totally inaccurate and all.

It most certainly isn't. Extra Dimensions? Please, extra dimensions are often used to fill out an equation.

Ekpyrotic is the universe I want to live in, until something better comes along.

you still havn't proved me wrong, what ISN'T composed of electrons, protons, and neutrons?

Light is composed of photons, but I see you've failed to produce any actual evidence that anything is made up of anything. This is just what I've been taught.

crap, i forgot about photons

....i got pwned :-(

and seeing as how we just discussed about certain properties of photons in chemisty class today...

i got double pwned :-( :-(

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Actually I heard that in 2007 they will be done building a big particle accelerator or something like that, that will be able to prove(at least partially) the string theory.

What's really stupid is that in 8th grade chemistry they're still teaching the Bohr model, even though it's been proven false, and replaced with the electron cloud model. The teacher's explaination was that we'll learn the real thing in High School. That's like telling an elementary school class that the world is flat, and they'll be told the truth later.
And ther are other weird particles, like positrons, bosons, and neutrinos. Quantum Mechanics is the most confusing type of science because the laws of physics break down at a quantum size. Okay, I just confused myself.

Yeah I was watching the special on PBS too , I think they put string theory in as simple terms as they could without compromising the science. It all revolves around quantum mechanics and is difficult to explain, I can recommend a book by Steven Hawking however that might help: THE UNIVERSE IN A NUTSHELL
its a very good read

:)
