Subject: I need a little advice. (Anserwed I guess)

I'm apart of the Bungie Community. I'm only a member of it.

I am not a moderator but yet everyday of my life I basically post here.

I see alot of rulebreakers everyday, whether it's a guy that posts about Recon or a guy that just starts random threads in the Halo 3 Forum.

When ever I see these people I automatically think correct them.

I need to know if that's what a community member should do.

Do we just try as hard as we can to generally avoid posts like that or do we be helpful members and tell them what they did wrong?

You could do a number of things. PM them with a correction (I do that from time to time), let them know publicly, but if you blatantly know that they're breaking a rule, let a moderator know.

Simple enough.

I've done that before but it's just so hard not to take action. I can't help it. Even in my friend's website I constitly nag people about the forum rules.
Look at my post post history; over half of it I bet is from telling people what they did wrong and from being an ass.

I know Frankie and all of Bungie are looking people who do good community service and good deeds.
What do they mean by good deeds?

It's pretty much like this:
If a person is posting in the wrong place or is misguided is some way then you can direct them to the right place and respond to their subject matter.
If a person is spamming/trolling/flaming then just ignore them. You could also (if it's particularly bad) PM a moderator who is online and give them a link so they can serve out some banhammer.

Ok, not great in the long run in terms of changing the direction of things, but it helps. Since we've got thousands of new members joining all the time (a certain fraction of whom will be...stubborn) we can never completely erradicate the problem short of injecting glucocorticoid into their necks whilst displaying a seach feature tutorial.
We have some ideas like about respositioning forums etc but for now either ignore or give guidance.

My life sucks. I'm on these forums literally 5-12+ hours a day; and that's not when I'm on Halo 3.
People can call me what I want but I know one thing is for sure: My life is literally in Bungies hands.

They have inspired me to do lots of stuff. The last thing I want to do is to screw everything all up by mistakes. I'm pretty sure I want a career at Bungie.

Edit: You have been a big help lately Ciaran.

That sounds very familiar. I would be interesting if just once a year we could see how many hours we've spend online.

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

For me, it depends on the situation. If they are breaking a major rule, or are just trolling, I will either PM them, or do nothing, because if you reply, all you're doing is bumping the thread to the top. But, if it's a simple mistake, like posting in the wrong forum, I'll reply with my answer, and will ocassionally point them in the right direction to the proper forum. Also, if I see someone who is breaking a major rule, I will PM whoever was the last moderator or administrator online.

And, if this thread is just a thinly veiled advertisement for you to become a moderator, I would highly suggest you don't try it again. If Bungie wants you to become a moderator, you will. There isn't really anything you can do besides act normal. I apologize if that wasn't your intent, but I'm starting to get paranoid what with all the threads about this subject.-

I've seen 50threads about people asking to become a Ninja, I know how it works.
I will never be a ninja like everyone else in this forum; but I can't help it. I have to correct all the wrongs.
I report the trolls though.

The best rule you can live by is "don't be a jerk." There's nothing wrong with gently directing someone to the appropriate destination; in particular it seems that new people are a bit lost in the puddle of rules. It's all about attitude, really. And even then you will still occasionally find people criticizing you for helping at all...if there's one thing B.NET desperately needs it's a mute button :)

I generally send someone a PM if they seem to be making an honest mistake. Also, if you see rule-breakers, send any of the mods a PM. If you're not sure who's on, or who to send it to, check This out. That will show you which was most recently on, and link you right to them.

Just be polite, and play nice. It goes a long way. ;)

If a thread is off-topic, please don't reply to it. If you want to give someone advice, do so with a PM. Replying usually either bumps off-topic threads, or derails an on-topic one.

Also, obviously PMing a moderator helps when you see people breaking the rules. You can't ban/lock/edit, whereas they can.

Wow...

But yeah I report threads and people all of the time but nothing ever happens. Simply the mod does not care enough or the person being reported is their little XBL friend so they just sweep the violation under the rug.

It's BS

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Wrong...

I photoshopped the moderator panel into my Firefox browser. I've blacklisted Pezza at least 17 times...but sadly the buttons don't work as intended.

To the OP, if you make it a habit to habitually (heh) tell people that they are breaking rules, get used to being called a "forum cop" a lot. I can think of other much more derogatory terms to call people, but apparently they think that one is insulting. However, there are good forum cops and bad forum cops.

"But you were dead a thousand times. Hopeless encounters successfully won. A man long dead, grafted to machines your builders did not understand. You follow the path, fitting into an infinite pattern. Your to manipulate, destroy and rebuild. Now, in the quantum moment before closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny."

Yeah, ash's statement basically sums everything up. <_< ( Darn. Why does everone get to these threads before me? XD )
