I want to get a 15GB iPod (not a mini, but the big one). I did a search on the internet, and found two different things: an iPod and a 3rd gen iPod. What is the difference? The prices are way different from each other (the iPod is like $290 and the 3rd gen is like $90). Help please! I don't want to buy a 3rd gen and find out it is a piece of crap or something.

Third generation iPods are the current iPods. They are the very slim iPods with the buttons across the top of the control wheel/bottom of the screen.

First generation iPods are about 2x thick (but still small enough to fit two or maybe even three in your pocket) and do not have the easily accessible buttons across the top.

Needless to say, the third generation iPods are the best at the moment. I would suggest buying one directly from Apple, however. Not only do you get free laser engraving, you also get a great warranty.

No matter which you buy, you will love it. I'd suggest buying a 15gb iPod from Apple.

Will the 3rd gen batteries last longer than 18 months, or will they crap out around then?

The battery thing against Apple is overrated. I had my iPod (had.. I sold it [bad decision] because I needed the money badly) and got at least 12 hours of playtime per day for a month straight.

I doubt you'll have to replace it, but if you do, you can buy a battery for $50 (not from Apple, since they overcharge). I think everyone's problem is that they completely use the battery up before they recharge. They don't start recharging until it's dead. That's a surefire way to kill any rechargeable battery.

So you don't care about mobility? If you do, I'd pick up a 512MB Creative Labs NOMAD MuVo TX. Otherwise, go with Creative unless you're using a Mac. iPods are overrated, less versatile (no data storage/voice recording), and cost more than a 30GB Creative mp3 player. Personally, I use a tiny 256MB Verge with voice recording and data storage. Oh, and iPods are the item deemed most likely to get you mugged, so buy a new pair of headphones to go with it if you get an iPod.

What are you talking about?

First off, the MuVo is horrible. Its battery life is absolutely horrendous. The sound quality is very poor. There's nothing good about the player. They're not compatible with Macs, either.

iPods aren't overrated. You can store data on it. I'm not sure where you got your information. I used most of my iPod's hard drive to store computer files. It costs more because the quality and craftsmanship is excellent. Besides, if you need a voice recorder, go pay $20 for a damned voice recorder. You can get a Belkin accessory to record, if you want. I think it's pointless.

The last sentence of your post is idiotic. Maybe you'll get mugged for having such an awesome player. :)

People don't mug me.

Someone tried once... I had to find a good dark place to hide him.
