If only adding XBL support was as simple as installing 22's, some subs and a boss spoiler to "mah ride".

Sadly, it is not.

Yeah, my Uncle is a programmer and he says online, or any type of multiplayer is a son of a -blam!- to incorportate.

You CAN play Halo CE online, but only with friends and not on XBL

You can hook up the original xbox (360 too I think) to a home network and "Tunnel" a game through the internet to a friends xbox, as long as he/she is "tunneling" as well.

You can always just buy Halo PC....that;s just THE best Halo game in existence - it's what got me into the halo series in the first place.

Not only does it support 16 player online, but it has exclusive maps only available on the PC version - which turned out to be one of the best maps ever made in any Halo game!
Along with Halo Custom Edition (a FREE add-on that allows you to play completely new maps made by the community), it's simple the ultimate Halo experience.

Howdy all, I know I will probably be betraying my infinite noobness about programming and such by asking this, but has anyone else ever wanted to play the original Halo over XBox Live? It doesn't seem like it would be terribly difficult to do, and as the 'game that started it all' so to speak, it would be a fitting legacy.

In any case no matter how old Halo 1 is, It's still a classic that deserves to be reintroduced to xbox live. Halo 1 still has a big cult following, and a live version of H1 would do better then most current games for that very reason alone.

That's my kind of network.

Everybody has suggested this already, ever since the advent of Xbox Live, and they still continue to do, stubbornly and ignorantly, to this day. I have, others have, and more still will continue to think about this. Nothing will come of it, however.

It's not happening, though. :/

And mine as well; clearly, in today's world of the broadband connection, online multiplayer is becoming a standard and is commonplace in many games we see now. Yet, I remember when having sixteen players in a single game was pretty damned cool to think about. It's important to value the local area network; after all, it's what many of us have used and still use today.

A third-party? Eww. We've seen them work on PC ports for Halo, and trust me, there have been too many disappointments to count. Another good reason is the one that Recon Number 54 just freaking mentioned: It's much, much more difficult to do this than said and no amount of complaining and requests will change that. Also, porting a game to a different platform is different from remaking Halo. It's not as simple as you think.

Dude, mention specifically XBC! We need more people at XBC. I'd like it if everyone used one tunneling provider.

I'm happy to announce that within a couple weeks I'll be joining XBC! One more person, and god knows we need more pplz.

some game-play elements would need to be altered. At that point, the game is truly no longer the Halo that we all know and love.

What "gameplay elements" do you think he is refering to?

XBC is definitely the most significant community. Gamespy Tunnel is, for all intents and purposes, dead. I wouldn't recommend anything other than XBC.

Goodie. Are you the type that only uses the pistol? I'd like to see more people join who mix it up. My favorite gametype is Teams on Battle Creek with no Sniping weapons, but It's hard to find five others who like that. I figure if I try to host much more I'll just have to switch to PP default. Either way, my preferences seem to repel the bulk of the XBC community.

Oh...I see....Remaking a game such as Marathon: Durandal perhaps wouldn't need to be completely reworked like Halo 1....right. Honestly, I think Bungie will not remake Halo 1 because it would take away from the sales of their DLC Maps. Everyone knows that the majority of people love Halo 1 more than Halo 3....just not when H3 has XBL and H1 doesn't.

Would you not think it'd be a slightly taller order when you're dealing with a game that's over 1 gig in size. I personally have no clue; just figured I'd throw the thought out there.
And apologies... but the majority of the people do not prefer the original over CE or they would go to the very unextreme lengths to play it over XBL. Bungie has priorities and while I'd LOVE it if they gave CE XBL compatability, I understand why doing that would not be high on the to do list. Every now and then I do feel like Bungie isn't very caring about its own game (referring to CE) but for the most part, they handle it very respectably.

  • 12.05.2007 7:07 PM PDT

The multiplayer alone is not over 1 gig in size. I know someone (he modded his xbox to put the modded maps on H1) once told me that the multiplayer alone was close to 576 MB or something.

Are you saying that it would make it more difficult to modify, or that it would make fewer people download it. In terms of modification, I can't imagine the code is a significant portion of the game's size. Most of the download would have to be the maps, campaign, pre-rendered video, and audio. I don't see much reason for needing to change any of that. So while the game is much larger in size, much of its size is in things that don't need to be changed. That being said, I'm sure the code is certainly a bit more complicated.

Seriously, they're nothing alike. Comparing them in this matter is foolish. I said it before: Durandal was released in 1995, and Halo in 2001, the latter being much more complex and less suited for online play than the former.
