IMO....
Halo 3 is a better game for the lesser able players ~ Proven by stronger close range weapons, more enclosed maps, equipment, beatdown system etc..
Halo 2 is a much faster game for the more able Halo community ~ Proven by the MLG Pro circuit, button glitches (however much you personally may/may not like them, the make the game much faster), and great maps..
I prefer Halo 2/ COD 4 atm until they fix some of the issues with H3 and introduce THC....
PS For most of you this post will be wasted due to the "OMGz Halo 2 is teh suck!11!!one" mind set some of you seem to have....
That is all...
I don't agree. Halo 3 has it's problems, but Halo 2's were worse. The AR gives newer players a fighting chance - but the precision weapons actually take more skill than they did in halo 2 and overall the weapons are much better balanced. There will be more maps along, they are looking into the melee situation and they are already going to reduce the frequency of the mauler.
Halo 2 may have benefited from the button glitches to some players in their own games as it adds an extra dimension to the gameplay - but it shouldn't have needed the extra dimension in the first place. The fact that most of the weapons and maps aren't used for MLG games demonstrates this - by the time tournament-style fans had finished setting up the game the way they want it there is very little left to play with. No wonder people thought the button glitches added some depth - it was greatly needed. (I don't condone the use of glitches in matchmaking which is cheating, but I well understand the logic for wanting them in your own games).
With the speed, damage, and shield recharge options in halo 3 it has the potential to be tuned far better than halo 2 for competitive play IMO. People who like ranked matchmaking complain about the ease of worse players getting high ranks, this is an unfortunate effect of the ranking system - which is sound in principle but due to the way people approach it (racing to the top, and then not playing on their high level anymore) it can't do it's job of placing people accurately in the skill range as they play over time.
The weapon system overall is much better balanced, precision weapons and grenades take more skill - I think this solid foundation will stand halo 3 in much better stead down the line. You have to remember halo 2 was a very different beast when it came out - it took a major gameplay update, the addition of THC, and months of experimenting by competitive fans to get to where it was by the end of it's life-cycle.
By the time we get to the same point in halo 3, it won't need button glitches to add depth!
Like you, that's just my opinion. To some halo 2 may look like a rosier option right now but halo 3 has much much greater potential.
