The word "mjolnir" is a greek word for hammer, which makes sence because the SPARTANS armour could destroy everything in its path.

Actually, Mjolnir is the hammer of Thor, the great Norse god. Mjolnir is roughly translated to "The smasher" or "One that smashes." See more here

Because it was a weapon that never missed and hit whatever Thor threw it at. It was also a little flawed (shortened handle) so Thor had to use a glove to throw it. It was also made as part of a competition

Basically, Bungie decided that the UNSC was trying to make cool names for their armor and the squad. Probably to give the impression of them being mythically powerful... the Spartans being the warriors who would wield Thor's hammer in the war against the Covenant.

MJORNIR first makes its Bungie apperance, in its true hammer form, in Bungie's "Minatuar." Think Diablo RPG, that's Multiplayer only, and much cruder. Oh, and you've got roughly four minutes to find your weapons (such as MJOLNIR and Durandal), armor, and spells before everything is settled with an epic duel! woot!

in short, bungie loves to carry similiar ideas, names, allusions, etc. through their games. Of course, the question then becomes "is it carried overr just cause, or is their a deeper meaning to it?" In the case of the marathon logo, that can get pretty deep. But for MJOLNIR, its a great name found in mythology that works well for the name of one's armored suit.

It seems as if everything Bungie does has a much deeper meaning than everyone would think. From their carry of details, names, etc. over to their newer games, to the Master Cheifs name, John 117. Everything has a deep and mysterious meaning.

Krieky, dude, the guy's name is not John 117. It is John. He is SPARTAN-117, Master Chief Petty Officer.
