Subject: Who are you guys?

Well...that's the question.

You might have seen me posting around here and the Halo 3 forum for a while now. As most Halo fans, I've been into Halo since the first game and really got into it once I bought Halo 2 and more so when I purchased XBL much later after that. I've only recently became a member of the community (my first account wasn't active at all, but I made it late last year).

Lately however, (seeing on how I'm technically new to the Bungie community) I've been wanting to know a little history and maybe some member / mod history.

So what do you know about the Bungie community? How long have you been here (and do you think you've made an impact on the community)? What was the community like when Halo 2 was new? Do you have plans to work for Bungie one day? Etc...etc...So, let me know what you know!

Well, I can't give you my life story right now, but you may want to check out Bungiepedia. Search anything/anyone you don't know, maybe you'll find their entry. (For the more prominent people, anyway)

Also, PM conversations are a great way to get to know people a bit more, ask questions, all that.

Xbox Live and IM (like MSN messenger), even more so.

Hmmm, thanks for the link.

It says that Yoozel has admin tools as a Master Forum Ninja. Is this just for him or the other Master Forum Ninja(s) as well?

All I know is that it is a very difficult thing to change the bungie community. Even those who strive to end up becoming ghosts. If you would like to know more about me and other members though, PM's are a great way to find out, just as Zag said. Im pretty sure I don't have a bungiepedia entry though.

The only way to change it is to be active and hopefully positive.

This site has quite a few moderators. Here is a good list.

He's just like any other Master Forum Ninja. They can perma-ban, that's all. "Admin tools" isn't necessarily the right word(s).

Well, being active is a bit hard when you have a million other "active" members drowning out your voice. At least the Septagon still has ears.

hmm... this could be interesting, and I'm bored, so why not?

What do I know about the Community? That's actually an incredibly difficult question to answer, now that I try. In fact... I really don't think I can come up with a meaningful answer. Moving on to something easier...

My join date reminds me that I've been here since October 2005. That would be about the time I started becoming a true member of this community. I had an eariler account, and I'd lurked for even longer, but I never really moved past the "Halo fan" and into "Bungie fan and community member" until starting my second (and current) account. As for making an impact on the community... I've tried, especially in the past year, to do something to make myself useful around here. Unfortunately, I would have to say that, to date, I have essentially failed at that. So no, I don't think I've had much of an impact on this community, as far as B.net (or the public community as a whole) is concerned.

I was hanging around here before Halo 2 was launched, but at some point around launch time I lost my internet connection. So I wasn't really around for very long when it was new. I do remember though, that it was essentially the same. People posted the wrong things in the underground (although much more frequently), people complained about how Halo 2 sucked so much compared to Halo 1, Bungie has sold out for charging money for the maps... but mostly, just people going around talking about stuff that interested them. There did seem to be a lot more theorizing about the Halo universe back then though. It seems like the focus has shifted drastically since Halo 1 from storyline based ideas to almost exclusively multiplayer thoughts on Halo 3. Then again, maybe I'm just out of the loop these days.

And for you last question, well, I actually am going for a computer science major, hopefully aiming for a job in video games. And Bungie does seem like a really cool place to work, with the juvenile sense of humor, sense of unity, and overall dedication to making awesome games. But as far as actually hoping to work for them, well, we'll have to see how things work out in the next 4 or 5 years.

Edit: Holy flipping crap people. There were no replies when I started that saga. :|

It is hard to call Bungie.net a community. It's more of a nexus of sub-communities.

What does Sawnose's rank of "Bungie.net Superuser" mean?

He is actually a Bungie employee. The superuser status allows him to edit the site.

Another thing that might be hard to answer.

I know I know...in order to become a moderator you not only have to become a member of the community for some time...but you also need to be a TOU-following member, etc...etc...

But what's the deal with all the moderators being so damn STRICT! I mean...wow...can't you just lean back once in a while and joke around?

Ex. First reply is better than the last reply

Achronos is the overlord, yes, but there a a few other people who also have total access to the site. Sawnose and runningturtle are two people I can think of off the top of my head.

The moderators must be strict especially in the Halo 3 forum.
For the most part, the moderators are pretty easy to get along with. A lot of them have a really good sense of humor and tell the most humorous mother jokes you've ever heard.

Well, it was a serious problem that needed to be dealt with in a serious manner. It's obviously all right to joke around from time-to-time, but Yoozle was just dealing with the issue appropriately.

The moderators know when to joke around.

I know exactly what you mean...but perhaps that wasn't the best of examples. What I was trying to say is that it seems as though the mods never joke around and they only appear when they can say something that needs answering or whatnot..thanks for the answer though. :)

I agree with gnomelet. Most of the mods here are very easy to get along with. The people that are like "omg haet teh mawdz" are the ones who tend to lack self control, common sense, intelligence or a nasty lack of all three.

I'm horrible at putting things into words, but since I've been here, I've found first hand that the community can be unforgiving to new members. I first came in 11/05/04 and shortly after that my PM box was full of people who apparently hated me and wanted to do horrible things to me (I can't remember what I said, but it was probably pretty stupid). I was never much of a forumgoer before Bungie.net so I was very turned off to this site and quit coming. I decided to come back the next year under the name True Underdog (05/06/05). I made sure to get a moderator's permission before creating a new account. Since then I've seen things like...the H2S vs B.net war. The New Mombasa vs Zanzibar war, and a lot of other idiocy. Recently I changed my name to NinjAg and gamertag to Mr Mousetrap. This has caused a bit of confusion among some people (as evidenced by this picture - beware, there are two F-Bombs in that picture).

I promise I won't change my name anymore. >_>

I have no plans on working in the video game industry; I'm a Psychology major and after I get my bachelor's degree I want to focus my graduate work on I/O Psychology. I want to get my master's degree and doctorate and then do I/O for a major business. Once I'm a wee old man, I'd like to teach (in all honesty) psychology classes, but I'm thinking way ahead of myself. Before I get my bachelor's degree (when I take upper-level psyc courses), I want to write a paper about violence in video games and how it may affect people, what can be done to prevent it, and why people shouldn't overreact to it.

This community is one of a kind and I'd recommend it to anyone (I've actually recommended it to a couple guys in my building).

Well, it really depends on what forum they're posting in. They tend to be more strict and less carefree in the Halo 3 forum, because there is so much moderating to be done in that forum that they just post what they need to and move on. In the Septagon (here) and Underground (Bungie General) forums though, they tend to be more laid back, and they actually post jokes more often than they crack down, from what I see.

  • 12.09.2007 9:46 PM PDT

You say tomato; I say potato.

I came to bungie.net in mid 6/11/05 and I've visited almost every day since. I don't post nearly as often as I did in my "wilder" days. I'm sure there are a couple of mods that I've irritated a bit. This site is special. I can get lost in it for hours on end.

I do not have any plans for getting into the gaming industry, but my soon-to-be Degree in Computer & Electronics Engineering Technology might open some doors in the future.

A lot of community members are in high school and act as such. It has been like that for years, although with more members they get louder and drown out the more intelligent members who lurk around constantly.

Though if you go back far enough, you will find that there was a time when the forums (all 3 that existed) were composed of surprisingly well-behaved individuals. Of course, with only a few thousand people here, and a fraction of them being regular posters, it's no wonder that a small amount of people were able to get along with each other.

Yeah...using as many characters as possible. I don't know what is more abused...Foman's keyboard or Tina Turner?

Dear lord, I've been on B.net on this profile for over 3 years now. That's sorta depressing. I miss people like Reigi, DMB, Shishka, a sober Impy, and GJJ that made the community "colorful" to say the least. It's too bad some of the newer members don't get to experience a community with them because they brought a lot to the table. Hopefully GJJ will get the issues resolved and rejoin us once again.

We joke around plenty when the Halo 3 forum isn't busting our balls (or more appropriately, our spleens (I think that's what it was)).

Most of the time in the Halo 3 forum, our posts are strictly business. I try to make normal posts that aren't threatening or whatever every now and then, though.

Also, hey, I'm 3 days away from my 3rd year birthday on B.net!

Loved Bungie for a while, but then moved over to High Impact Halo and hated Bungie for some reason?? I then decided that I hated HIH?? and came back to Bungie.net... Yeah, I don't know...
I pretty much never leave the Septagon. It's speed is good for the amount of time I can spend on here.

I don't post much. I like to read more than post, except in #moap where I talk a bit :)

That's about it...
