Considering the reaction and resulting social effects are pretty much exactly as predicted, your embarassment is not necessarily. I'm quite happy with how it turned out. There's a few tweaks here and there I'd like to make, but nothing major.

Really, an elitist jackass doesn't need a title to be elitist. Indeed, the titles help make sure that those that are elitist jackasses get punished for doing so.

Besides, I'm not sure what you're concerned about - did you think the "reporting" button appearing at the same time was by chance?

Bungie is doing nothing but encouraging elitism. I am ashamed at the hypocricy that Bungie has displayed by implementing this feature. I'm embarassed for you, Achronos.

Compared to other forums, Bungie does not encourage elitism. Do you see a million ranks, pets, custom avatars, emblems, badges, etc . . . Even though I like Gamespot.com, they do much more to encourage elitism. Thanks Achronos for the changes.

Hm, what am I?

Member Since: 8/29/2004 = Heroic? Gaaay.

Wait, did you just answer the question of "what am I?" with that term?

Wow, used it as an insult, but on yourself.

I am amazed with that. It's like shooting yourself in the head with a howitzer. Not easy, but impressive to observe in action.

I would personally want to observe that at quite a distance. Fear the pink mist.

Since I'm assuming the only reason you would happen to be on this page is if you wanted to prove something by taking a look at my game stats, go right ahead buddy.

Halo: Reach

Halo 3 / ODST

I'm perfectly happy being a little ol' member. Titles don't mean anything to me. It's the person. :)

And reading some of the posts in this thread cleared up the questions I had, thanks guys.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

It does, but this can be brought down significantly by bans and warnings. Have you been blacklisted or warned in the past few months?

I don't think my question has been answered yet...

Can a person go up a 'rank'? Or can you only go down, and then back up...?

  • 12.17.2007 11:08 PM PDT

Yes you can go up a rank. If you had to go down first that would not work since everyone starts out as a member and there is nothing below that.

I guess what I am trying to say is: Is your highest possible rank restricted by your join date?
And I meant, can you only go (back) up after going down a 'rank'?

1 - 1 = 0 + 1 = 1

I don't think it is restricted by your join date, but nobody knows exactly what factors are used to determine your rank, or what if any restrictions there are. They are keeping it a mystery to prevent abuse of the system.

If people find out how gain these new titles, the system will be abused before you know it.

Exactly.

I'm happy knowing that I've been around a while, and despite my 2 blacklistings, Bungie now shows to me that they trust me to post in a reponsable manner.

Never looked at it like that. I hope that works out. Anyway I've always found it mildly amusing at random people with random names making glowing references to their random forum "rank". Note the quotation marks around "rank" because if you're not mod/admin staff (and a few other exceptions) then IMO you can be ranked King Big One for all I care. Forum "ranks" never have any effect other then negative.

It would seem so.

Quick History Lesson:

Two accounts exist still from 10/12/01. One is mine, the other is Evil Otto's (he was on the community team at the time, he still is at Bungie, though). Yeroen (Max Hoberman), Matt Soell, and Peter Marks also had accounts, but they have since been deleted as they have moved on to other things.

However, the first day that a user could create an account was I believe on 11/15/01, Halo 1's launch.

In other words: If you guys didn't help me build the ancient pyramids and put up Stonehenge, you're not going to be a Mythic Member.

Report spam button = awesome.

Way back when I was a moderator, member had to actually PM a moderator or email them through the common address to get things done. Now you kids get a fancy button that will do all the work for you, you've got it good!

Edit: WTF Achronos! Former moderators (that haven't gone rogue, emo or totally disappeared) should get a title! C'MON!

Just kidding, it's not as if I post often enough to notice a title... ;-(

I'm pretty sure you're the only member on that list... And I don't recall seeing your around here for quite some time until today. (Welcome back, by the way.)

As a side note, I musty admit that I snickered ever-so-slightly when I saw that I had a higher "rank" than a former moderator.

I'm guessing the main intention of adding the titles was to encourage people to be more helpful. Let's hope it works.
