Chomsky, you seem a bit... hmm... disenchanted..... :-P
As you intimate, I hope that most of the people here keep in mind that, at the end of the day, BNet is entertainment and nothing more.
All in all, you're right, but since you appear to have a grasp on the concept, I was hoping that you would point out that "elitism" is a misnomer and the most misused word on these forums. It should instead be phrased "forum arrogance" and, in some cases, "vicarious forum arrogance." But somehow whenever I use those terms, they never seem to catch on. ;-)
Hi Foman...
I am somewhat disenchanted; but not so much with these forums as various other things I have been dealing with recently.
The forums are the same as always.... which is quite reassuring actually =P
To be clear about the 'old chestnut' topic of elitism: I am fascinated by how regularly the issue is pulled out of the bag. Simple facts are ignored and debates ensue with no consideration for reality or what possible good they might achieve. It's all amusement, but it's also clear that for many it is something.... much more.
Bungie.net is not a democratic arena where decisions on the fate of a privately owned company, and the games they produce, are made by 'the people'. Neither SHOULD it be such a place (I prefer coherent story and a solid, playable finished product). On the other hand, none of this means that there can be no democratic trends and opportunities present, nor that Bungie never listen, but rather that it's just good common sense to remember where one is before wasting time and effort on pointing out the obvious. Actually, I'd say with Halo 3 there are impressive leaps made right here on Bungie.net towards a kind of 'democracy of video-game fun' (and that's really all the users should be interested in). It's probably also worth pointing out that the purest form of democracy is only ever present in small groups... *hint* @ users.
My personal view is that if one has reached a point where they are furiously typing esays on the 'rights' of Bungie.net users then they may have become somewhat lost (not always.... but it is something to reflect on).
Everybody can get a little too involved... nobody is above that. I've been there too.
