Who says it is based on join dates?

The guy above you ;)
I cracked up dude! That was funny.

Achronos said in the other thread that it has to do with the user's "trust rating."

Now that the system is explained there is no need for to be so upset. The good guys who have the titles won't be the ones bragging about said titles.

Your circular logic is intriguing.
I do agree.
anyone that uses their Title as a way of putting down someones opinion will likely not have said title. (afterward)
we'll see how the system turns out.
Twould be nice to have some lower ranks in addition.
What do you propose? Something like "Spamtard"?

I would enjoy that one.
But uhhh, I was thinking more along the lines of Troll. <_<
But whatever works.
I am curious on how the system tracks trust rating.
Is it like, Posts divided by warnings and Bans?
But I guess knowing how the system works would leave it open to exploitation.

I believe this thread has met it's match as soon as we found out what the titles are based on.

Your understanding of how they work is lacking. Join dates are not what is determining the title. Your trust rating is.

Titles based on join dates? You have to be kidding me. Why take out join dates from in forum viewable profiles, always talk about combating elitism, then give titles like heroic member, and legendary member? That is the dumbest most selfcontradicting thing I've ever seen. I am deeply dissappointed in any system that promotes elitism, but even more so in one that promotes elitism, based on time, not any type of contribution. Its simply stupid to me to see someone who has just gotten off a ban, and yet they are supposed to be "heroic." I find this to be really stupid.

That being said, I like the report as spam option, and I hope it isnt abused, or used in a pointless manner.

Can we actually see these trust raitings? And how do you earn more of it?

Your understanding of how they work is lacking. Join dates are not what is determining the title. Your trust rating is the determining factor. And that rating can be affected by lots of different things. Getting warnings, for example.

And after having the trust ratings being calculated for more than a year without them being used for anything, I decided this was the best way to start using them for positive reinforcement. Given that a glance at who has the highest trust does give me a list of people who aren't troublemakers, I'd say the system works.

I'm frankly sick and tired of the cries of elitism everyone also makes here. We've tried removing titles, removing join dates, banning the word noob, yet you people still create divisions like this anyway, be it on skill level in the game, using various words, grammar, etc. I've come to the conclusion that part of the problem around here is that there is no real incentive for people to behave well other than "you won't get banned." And even then, some of you just create new accounts and continue being jerks on those accounts.

So, we're changing tactics, something I was originally going to do last year but had to stop work on it because of Halo 3. So, this is the first of a few ideas I have for rewarding people who do well. And as for your cries of "elitism" - well, if you see it, you have a shiny "report as spam" button to report it. If people don't report stuff, now, it is your own fault, not the moderators' lack of coverage.

Then it is settled.
The road to a better Bungie.net begins here.
I have renewed faith in the Halo 3 forum. It can still be saved!
As for the flood, it was a necessary casualty.

I note that Achronos does not have a "Report as Spam" button under his post.

I think a lot more goes into the formula than just join dates.

It works by taking your true trust and subtracting your trust uncertainty times a conservative factor determined by Achronos giving you your displayed trust. It makes gaining and loosing trust really easy at first but then, the more you post it becomes certain of your trust level and it's hard to gain or lower your trust level. It's simple, really.

Oops, am I going to get reported for spamming now?

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

No, it uses many multiple combinations of metrics from your activity on the site. Each metric is then given different weights and add or subtracted from the total score depending on if it is a positive or negative metric. Bans/warnings are a big negative, although different lengths of bans are weighted differently, and the length of time they affect your score varies as well.

But no, I'm not telling you how it is calculated. You don't need to know, because it doesn't matter. Not even the mods can see your score. This score has been calculated for everyone for over a year, it is well established, and is fairly accurate. Enough for these kinds of positive reinforcement rewards, anyway.

You're getting pretty bent out of shape over this. Any particular reason? None of the titles are negative, and the vast majority of the membership is still "Member." I'm aware of the quality over quantity arguement, but given that you can't boost this rating, and giving the general quality level of a lot of posts here right now, you can't really tell me that this, of all things, is going to hurt post quality. The people with the titles are the positive members. If a positive member does something negative, their title drops. In the end, it is really not that meaningful, but it does provide a nice little perk to those people who are the duplicate account creating spammers that this site is often known for.

People are so slow, the entire system is based on trust, which is awarded either by post count, or join date, then dropped by reports, bans, etc. This means at root people who either post a lot, or have been here a while are rewarded, not based on the content of their post, but instead by the quantity, or join date. I'm sorry if I favor quality over quantity. Look at foman, I dont think there are many more "trusted" members, hell he ran ARG, yet he isnt even a heroic member. I have a feeling join dates play a BIG part in the trust rating.

So achronos, why dont you tell us what makes up that trust rating?

Apparently, I'm just as much as a trouble maker as the rest of b.net.

I blame the schools.

Edit: Foman is just a member as well, that makes me feel less like a horrible person for those bans I got.

I'm liking this new rankings things. Prome finally got what he wanted. It gives me something to strive for other then just being a good overall person.
I'm loving the report as spam button, but why do I have one on my own posts?

He used to be a moderator, a while ago, but he stepped down and now he's just a very-rarely-active member.
