Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

I have a question as well; thanks to Recon.

and anyone being enough of a prick to garner reports or ninja attention will get a warning/ban which puts their title in jeopardy.
What if, say a person reporting something say like a thread in the wrong forum, then goes to another forum and reports a few more. Then reports a few other infractions, would the system know? Basically, does the system know the difference between a person trying to be helpful vs a person just reporting to report? Or is there a little bit of Human action as well? Say, the moderators have the options of 'Helpful' and 'Not Helpful', or am I just a long ways off?

I think it can be used for people lying about stuff, and bumps. Double posts...etc.
Im happy that it records abuse to it though. Im happy this lets us now become what i now call "Mini Mods". At least now though.. i dont need to send GameJunkieJim a message on MSN!

I suppose you do have a point. And honestly, I never even thought of it like the XBL feedback system. Sure it may be completely different, but as you said, it seems to have the same basic principles.

One slight issue; you can report locked threads as spam.

How does the system distinguish between abuse and legitimate reports? What if someone is reporting a lot of spam in a short space of time and it is legitimate?

By design.

Although old posts you can't report.

And it is aware of edits, by the way. Because it is just that good.

Good to see at least somebody takes this place seriously

I am sincerely disappointed in everyone except JIMH. JIMH, have a gold star.

I'm just worried about saying unpopular opinions now, or making a thread in general. Each of those in guaranteed to get at least one jerk to press my button especially in the flood or H3 forum, where someone's opinion becomes fact.

So, I feel like I'm tip-toeing through a minefield now. Can I never, ever again make a joke about user date? I'm afraid I'll get screwed over if I try and be funny about certain topics now.

Not that I was funny to begin with.

Any advice?

Which is where I and my ability to judge comes into play.

If enough members report something, I then look into it. If I agree with their assessment that the post/thread is a problem, I act. If I don't agree and feel that they were mistaken or malicious in their reporting, I can also respond in a manner that is appropriate to their mistake. Thread creators, responders and reporters are each accountable for their actions.
That's reassuring to know. I post what is on my mind regardless of how someone might think of it. I don't intend to change any time soon.

Hmm, we cant report ninja's for spam D:

Just kidding, we wouldnt need to... hopefully :\

Great work Achronos, now it is much easier to report spam threads and they will hopefully start dissapering and people would stop posting in them.

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

The only thing I would like to know is just basically how the system works, because it may affect what posts I report. For instance, if I see a thread in the wrong forum, I would report it if all it does is identify the thread to the moderators. But, if it in reality makes them look into the user, then I won't. I really would just like to know if I should only use it for the rude jerks trying to ruin discussion, or for the everyday threads that need to be locked, but there was no malicious intent at all by the poster.

The system accounts for that, too - don't worry, moderators are still the deciding factor here. If someone starts using the report as spam button as a way to spite you, they'll fail... except if their goal was to waste their own time. You won't even notice them trying to do it.

So, what good can come of doing so? Does the feature do anything other than alert the moderators to a post's presence?

There is no need to be scared. Mods ulitmately decide if our behavior is worthy of punishment.

So now I'm a beta tester. Let's see where this goes.

I have a big question.

I just noticed that there is a "Report as spam" on my recent screenshots. Could someone please explain what the point of that is? I mean if I choose to spam my own recent screenshots (though I'm not exactly sure how you could do that) it would be more stupid than annoying.

True. I don't think that the multiple requests of "This is spam" being reported by the button seals the fate of the OP and the thread as "Spam." I see the button as someone who calls the police to report a crime. Until the investigators get there and thoroughly scan through the evidence, only then can they determine whether it was a crime or a blunder.

Also Zag, funny was something you were born without ;)
