If you have seen the very first versions of halo they were in 3rd person. 1st person halo is defintly a great way to go, but I was curious if you think the 3rd person halo would be fun or not. (also, what are your thoughts on the weird creature master chief is riding on in that video of the early versions{I think is on this site})

Well, the prototype wasn't a third person shooter or action game. It was a real time strategy game (technically a 3rd person camera view I guess), kind of like Command & Conquer, Starcraft, and Warcraft series of games. I would play it, although it would need to be on a PC, as RTS games have too complex of a control and UI system to work with on a controller easily.

oh is that what he meant? a starcraft like game but Halo? and yeah, those games dont work on game platforms, no hotkeys and stuff on the controller

That was how Halo actually started, I wish I could play a good build of it. It changed into the FPS we all love though. It is strange to think it started as a RTS and as a Mac game.

Would've been a great game if it had stayed in 3rd person, Oni style. What I'm most "upset" about the changes in halo is the loss of the great, huge outdoor environments and the huge emphasis on vehicles. :/ Don't like games that make me travel one freakin linear road in a linear box canyon. Keep in mind, Jager, that the game had no point at that time. There was really no game, just some ideas and tech cobbled into something that resembled a game. Also, Bungie employees pointed out that the third person model of the game just wasn't any fun.

Shishka,
if its one game company i'm gonna trust when they say "it just wasn't fun", its bungie. =) i thought it was interesting that they said they fired it up on a LAN and noone could hit anything, the controls just didn't work well, and that the computers at the time couldn't handle a doable frame rate. The graphics were jawdropping: but those were static screenshots. it sounded like they weren't getting much performance on the machines back then. its kinda like MP Oni: bungie said it just wasn't doable, and i'm gonna believe 'em on it. Of course, i would've loved to have seen the halo of old come out: it struck me as a comletely novel and innovated action game that hadn't been done before. Certainly: it would not have been as popular.

Instead, they refined it to a formula that's been proven to work. So we get a typically FPS that is untypically polished, clean, and well thought out. The vehicles added a great element in MP, but in SP they felt naked and unsure to me. and so bungie delivers a game that swells the ranks of bungie fans like nothing else. who am i to really tell them they should've done things differently?

of course a new direction of Myth-style combat would've been nice too . . .
