That is a good point, but I just think there should be a way for the community to say someone has done something worthy of extra note

In a way, there is, the moderators. Now they may be a small part, but they were chosen for a reason. That reason being that they are a big part of the community on bnet.

You see, the only thing that worries me over this whole Report Spam button, is that the definition of what people find humorous and/or agreeable comes into play. Me saying this on today of all days (something I wasn't involved in I may add), seems hypocritical, but what worries me most about it is people misusing it because they have a different point of view.

I'm sure that at least early on people will be very eager to try out the new spam button, and what you say comes right into play.

I prefer the fully automated process, to be honest. I think it would be nice to be able to have a feature that would let us give a nod to people who we think deserve it, but in the end it is simply to easy to abuse. Spammers and trolls not only have friends, but they could make mutiple accounts. Any system that is able to be boosted will be boosted, unfortunately.

This goes for the existing tools as well, but I guess you just have to hope the true reports drown out the abuse

This is definately a step in the right direction. No longer does someone have to try and find a mod that is online to PM with a thread that needs to be shut down. Just press the button, and wait. I am sure that there are a few people out there that will try to abuse the system, but they will be dealt with in due time. Kudos to the web team.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Is there a FAQ on what should and should not be reported? Do off-topic threads count as spam? Threads that are simply stupid? What about excessive flaming? That's not technically spam, but I think it should be reported.

Although just "report to moderator" might be more vague, but at least it would let people know for sure that they should use it to report anything that they think violates the rules.

But if we can't see the inner workings of it, how is that possible? A moderator may take action, but how can we know if moving counts for, against, or neutral in the system? I don't think we should know exactly how the system works, but there should be a guideline of what we should do.

No, I was assuming the report function worked differently and was more automated into the trust system (reports that a moderator acts on are positive, reports that are not and/or are flagged are negative, although thinking about it that would be a lot for the system to keep track of). But I should never assume when I'm dealing with Achronos. ;-) Thanks for clarifying.

So now I'm a beta tester. Let's see where this goes.

A legitimate concern but I'm sure if it becomes too much of a problem then the Overlord will us know what is and what isn't spam. Plus it has been suggested that the button be used for infractions other than spamming.

The reporting is neutral. It simply notifies us. We get the report, we evaluate the reported post and depending on our response/action, we also can flag the report itself based on our findings/actions.

So I would ask any involved member to use the report feature anytime they encounter a post that is clear rule violation.

We get the message, and look at it. If we act (lock, move, warn, ban, whatever) we will do it based on the post as it stands in the thread. Since there isn't a "report with footnote", it's going to be up to us to figure out "what got multiple members to report this post?"

Or am I misunderstanding your question?

so what you are saying is that there is no way to "abuse the system" since its still effectivly being run by the mods?

  • 12.10.2007 11:21 PM PDT

I don't know for sure how any of it works, but from what I have read it sounds like the mods get the final say in what happens in the end as far as locking threads and handing out warnings and blacklistings. As far as abuse Achronos said that there is a way for the system to tell who is doing what is right and who is being stupid with the new button. Again I would think that the mods would have final say in what happens to these people.

If you don't got it, you want it. If you got it, you want more of it. Of course if you don't know what it is, it's hard to get any in the first place.

I think anything which takes a bit of the load off mods (and puts it elsewhere on their labored backs) is worth it. This could really help us clean up the community, and make B.net a better site.

As a Squirrel Ninja I do hereby promise to uphold our traditions, beliefs, and secrets, to recruit and induct Squirrel Ninjas who represent our ideals with pride, and to defend our traditions at all costs to myself with no exception. As a Squirrel Ninja I promise this until I die, or can’t physically or mentally uphold the ways of the Squirrel Ninja.

The only question I have left (not sure if it has already been answered by Achronos) is if the report button flags the thread or the individual post. Knowing that would drastically change how I report infractions.

Post. If someone violates the rule, clicking on "report" at the point of the violation makes our job easier.

In some cases, the post itself is a clear and apparent violation. But I am finding (in practice) that I tend to visit the thread to look around, get some context and see if others were being similarly disruptive.

So, if you are inclined to click on every improper post in a thread.... you probably don't need to spend that much of your time. Just like a cop will stop you for a broken tail light and then ask for DL, insurance and registration. We like to make sure that everything else involved "checks out".

Understood.

I was just worried about accidentally flagging a thread with the button when the intention was to flag an individual poster.
