I'll use Halo:CE as an example of what I'm thinking of:

Pillar of Autumn: Complete PoA in 8:00 Minutes on Legendary to unlock Super Jump

Halo: Complete Halo without using the Sniper Rifle on Heroic to unlock Paintball Mode

The Maw: Complete The Maw in 20:00 minutes on Legendary without using a Rocket Launcher to unlock Low-Gravity.

Just examples. Obviously, they could be harder if need be and the "cheats" could be whatever you can imagine.

I think a cheat-system like this adds tons of replay value to a game. People tend to think of these as "cheats" but if you recall Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, using these cheats in game and you can't unlock other cheats (or get credit for beating the game). Also, every "cheat" that you use applies to EVERY player in the game, so it's not really a "cheat" but a "game mode". Ya dig?

cheats will... well... cheapen the game. no boss or cheats is one iof the things that made halo cool. I wouldn't change a thing.

personally, the game itself creates its own replay value. you don't need cheats to exploit it. plus, sorry to say, cheats are pretty "childish" no offense. you would become so completely dependent on the "super jump" or what have you, that you would stop enjoying the original game as it was, and have your "skills" worsen as time goes on. it's also just a personal thing for me, i can't stand playing a game with cheats, cause you don't really get any better.

yeah, i was just complainign about how impossible they are to do and what they spoil when they are introduced.... but some levels should have low gravity and what not built into them, as a jump that is unmakeable on any other level is much makable in this one... (maybe not though, low grav would be cool)

A lot of people set in their ways, apparently.

Perhaps if you understood these "cheat options" a bit more. See, you could use them in MP if you wanted to, but it would add incredible replay value to the single player mode. And let's face it, you can't improve much in multiplayer battles going against AI all day anyway.

Secondly, you have to earn the cheats. You can't use a cheat to earn another cheat. That's cheating. ;-) So, you'll likely have to play a level over and over again trying to earn said cheat. This adds even MORE replay value to the SP game.

Third, if you don't want your skills to detiorate, don't use the cheats.

God forbid we have FUN playing a game now and then.

I'm not opposed to bizarre or ridiculous cheats. Y'know, giant heads infinitely destructive rockets, the whole shmear. However, I think they shouldn't be able to be used as a crutch. You should have to prove yourself more than good enough to beat the game without 'em. I don't think they'll damage the game.
They'd just add in a little extra once players have more or less conquered the single-player game.

"You should have to prove yourself more than good enough to beat the game without 'em" -- Scipio

That's the idea behind "Goal Based Cheats", naturally.

You have to do something pretty spectacular to get the cheat. You have to EARN it. Earning the cheat will prove that you're good enough to use it. Y'know?

Also, they could easily put in a rule that says you can't advance in the game when using a cheat (i.e., you can only play levels you've already unlocked).

I would really like to see unlockable single player levels. Bungie
could make subplots that would add to the story, or do cool
things like remake Marathon levels or something.
