Overall, I feel that the report feature is a huge improvement and can help benefit the forums in the future. Now, we as a community have the opportunity to report a user's post with just the click of a button. However, I do think that a small change could be a big help for members when reporting a post. Sometimes one will question whether or not they should report a post and without knowing exactly how it works, may be afraid of "abusing" the system. Well, for those new members out there who don't know exactly what spam is, let me tell you.

Spam is when one creates a thread or posts a reply without the intention of contributing to the discussion, but rather commenting with a statement or opinion that is unconstructive and most likely irrelevant. Knowing that you may think, well I shouldn't report that post because it does not fit with the definition of spam. However, you fail to understand that the concept of clicking that button, which is not just to report a post as spam, but instead to report a post that violates the Membership Agreement, Code of Conduct, Terms of Use, Forum Rules, and any other Temporary Notices posted in the stickies of that particular forum.

I do think that the phrase "report as spam" may be a little misleading to those who cannot fully comprehend the meaning behind the report feature. And because of this, they will not report posts and use its full potential. My suggestion would be to change the phrase to "report this post" in order to avoid any confusion regarding this new tool for members. Obviously I do not make the decisions around here, but I would like to hear your opinion on this topic and any other suggestions on improving the report system. Again, I am not sure if this change would be considered unnecessary, but in my opinion, it could only be more beneficial for the Bungie.net community.

No.

But then new members might think "Report as what, is this a bad thing, what's it mean" and we will be ironically, flooded with spam threads about the report as spam button

Apparantly it's smart enough to detect abuse, and Recon said "spam" is a misleading gesture, it infact means any bad post.

I like it, for more than one reason. The former is obvious, but the latter, I shall explain: Reporting can work both ways. If enough members recognize certain threads and/or posts and report them for their excellence, this could help with the rating system. Of course there will be those who abuse it, but no more than those who will abuse it in it's current rendition. I think changing the system and posting a lengthy and detailed( O.K. maybe not to lengthy) explanation would have a positive impact on the community as a whole. Not only would members be able to keep their forums and community clean, but they would be able to contribute to the rewards given to those they recognize as exceptional in their community. Thoughts?

As an example I am reporting this post, to bring it to the attention of the staff, but for good reasons as it is encouraging the growth of the community. :D

Remember that it is still a report feature. We act on it so we can sort out who is doing the right thing and who is mistreating it at a glance. Don't be afraid to use it though, the more the better. It's basically another tool on our belt so it isn't the central player in the moderating of the forums, it's the same old couple of guys doing the same job underneath.

Hmm, I think "report this post" is vague and confusing. Report it as what?

Give people credit, I think the majority of B.net members know what spam is. In the least they know spam is a bad thing, and if they see people flaming, bypassing the BLAM filter or actually spamming, then isn't it all good in the context of what we're trying to accomplish?

Formerly known as BASs13 and One Point Three

Maybe have a box that pops up to select why this post should be reported (Excessive flaming, bypassing the -blam!- filter, spamming, etc.). If this is already part of the design, I'm sorry. I just haven't had the chance to use the magic button yet.

I like that idea. It would provide context for the mods.

I also agree this is a good idea, kind of like the "Submit Player Review" on Xbox Live, instead we could have a "Submit Post Review" Where instead of just an arbitrary, BAD/GOOD post feature, you could rate different posts as helpful, informative, or insightful. On the other end you could rate them as, flaming, trolling, insulting, racists, etc.

It's something worth discussing. Should the reporting feature be used only as a way to report bad things, or could it also be used for good? Alas, I fear that if the option to submit good reviews of posts could easily just lead to another way to bump posts....maybe there should be a cap on how many good reports a post can receive?

I just realized as I thought this through that maybe there's already something like that in the system with bookmarking topics. I wonder if the trust ratings are effected by how many people bookmark topics you make, then again that would not make sense as many people, (including myself) bookmark topics only for certain replies made by other people besides the original poster.

I think I've said enough, and have kind have derailed my main point, so in summery, what would you think of a "report as [good]" feature as well? Would it be worth it's trouble?

I'll be on my own side.

I think it would be quite easy to see who is abusing it and who isn't. If a mod looks at the "inbox" (or whatever it is) of spam reports, and see's the same guy just reporting everything, and a lot of it isn't spam, then that's obviously someone abusing it, but if someone every so often reports a topic as spam when it really isn't, there's no real harm done. At least they're trying.
