Man, I hate it. It makes me sad and depressed. I mean, Frodo leves Sam and every one else. And Gandalf leves them too for that matter. That's the one thing that I hated in the book and movie. Does anyone else feel this way?

your about 30 years late for discussing this.

(yes it was a book long before it was a movie, i had read through all 1112 pages thrice before seeing the movie)

If you read on a bit in the tineline of the book, you see that Legolas and Gimli went on a boat over to the Grey Havens, and also about 50 years after Frodo left, Sam went over in a boat and was accepted. So everyone was happy!

Aragorn lived till 300+ and when Merry and Pippin died they were all buried together. Gandalf and Frodo and Sam and Legolas AND Gimli all ended up in the Grey Havens with the happy little elves.

The End. (Really, it's the truth!) read the appendices.

I like the ending. Also, the last line in the book, spoken by sam, was also the last line in the hobbit(spoken by bilbo) I thought that little touch was well-orchestrated... Its a shame the movies don't even come close to doing the books justice, because I was a huge fan before the damn movies (but now everyone thinks I'm just another bandwagon hopper... Damn them). I guess it's sort of depressing, but whats wrong with that? If they continued the book it would be even more depressing. You know what really depresses me? Overdrawn sequels... I like it to end with the major conflict just ended and the euphoria of victory still lingering. I do not like sequels that are:
A:After the victory... Aftermath (Damn depressing because everything is destryed and devastated)
B:20 years later... I hate this kind of thing... All the cool badass charachters are old and decrepid. Not many movies like this, but there are a few games. Also depressess the hell out of me.
--
Some examples of perfect (In my opinion) endings are:
* The Matrix (1)-- Perfect... leaves a sense of conclusion without actually resolving anything
* Star Wars-- Leaves you with a definite feeling that the tide has turned...
* The list goes on for a very long time...
--
Basically, I think that a book should not really end... merely conclude satisfactorily a single event or conflict. In the LotR Books, The War of the Ring is over, but there is obviously more that will happen. This means that each person can customize the ending for themselves any number of times, wich adds to the overall experience. This is just my thoughts on the matter of course, but whatever.

Oh yeah I forgot to add the bit about it being depressing... so? A great many depressing things are good... Halo2 is defined by an overwhelming sense of melancholy, and it manages to be a great game. Same thing with most great war movies. There are a great many masterpieces of literature out there that are tradgedies as well...

A bit off-topic here... but it is clarified somewhere that when elves die they go to the halls of Mandos, and that it is unknown by the Vala (and hence the narrator) what happens to men, but what happens to Hobbits, Dwarves, and Ents when they die?

If you like that, read the Silmarillion and the Book of lost tales I and II. You'll love it.

It's just, when I get to the ending of a book, I don't want to feel sad. I don't want to wonder what the place Frodo is going to looks like. I want to know everything that happens to each character still alive.

Read the Silmarillion. It describes Valinor with some detail, and as for the rest of the living charachters... Read the appendices

It is basically the real story of middle earth. Like LotRx10000. Think massive epic battles between the kindgdoms of the high elves and Morgoth (Sauron's boss)... it is really cool, but reads more like a history book than a story. Still kicks ass... There are large quantities of balrogs and dragons and heroes... 0ober cool... A must-read for anyone who loves the world of tolkien and not just the LotR. Also rereading the LotR books after the Silmarillion greatly enhances your enjoyment of it... you get subtle jokes and obscure references you didn't before.

My only problem with the elves is how Tolkien put them up as some anglic beings. Then of course, the men are the weak ones, easily corupted.

Ah! but if you read the silmarillion, you see that the humans don't suck as much as you think... It seems that once elves die, they wind up in the halls of mandos... some kind of place where they await the end of the world. And they're stuck there. On the other hand, humans seem to have total release from this world, and apparently get to participate in the second great music... takes a while to explain... I can if you want but it takes a lot of time.

All does not go well for Arwen. After the king dies she lives a prolonged life of despair, and doesnt even attempt to reach the land across the ocean. women

Ummm...that's 'cause it's true. Men are corrupted easily by things. 'Specially money and power.

But, in my opinion*, the Lord of the Rings books aren't as awesome as everyone thinks they are. I understand that they're supposed to have this epic story behind them and it's supposedly one of the classic tales of our time, but I found them more boring than interesting. There are so many pointless songs, characters ramble on forever about nothing, and the style of the time they were written in (i.e.: over use of the hyphen) annoys me.

*Don't flame me. I'm just pointing out things that I didn't like.

Actually in another book I think or something it tells a bit about Sam and how he becomes Mayor, has a happy life..then goes to live with Frodo and the Elves...I forget which book I read this in but I know it's true. Just look for Tolkien's books in the Library and you should find it.

Read the silmarillion then... very few pointless songs, and none of the charachters really speak... its more of a detailed history. I will not let this thread die until at least three people have promised to read the silmarillion!
