I like the ending. Also, the last line in the book, spoken by sam, was also the last line in the hobbit(spoken by bilbo) I thought that little touch was well-orchestrated... Its a shame the movies don't even come close to doing the books justice, because I was a huge fan before the damn movies (but now everyone thinks I'm just another bandwagon hopper... Damn them). I guess it's sort of depressing, but whats wrong with that? If they continued the book it would be even more depressing. You know what really depresses me? Overdrawn sequels... I like it to end with the major conflict just ended and the euphoria of victory still lingering. I do not like sequels that are:
A:After the victory... Aftermath (Damn depressing because everything is destryed and devastated)
B:20 years later... I hate this kind of thing... All the cool badass charachters are old and decrepid. Not many movies like this, but there are a few games. Also depressess the hell out of me.

Some examples of perfect (In my opinion) endings are:
* The Matrix (1)-- Perfect... leaves a sense of conclusion without actually resolving anything
* Star Wars-- Leaves you with a definite feeling that the tide has turned...
* The list goes on for a very long time...

Basically, I think that a book should not really end... merely conclude satisfactorily a single event or conflict. In the LotR Books, The War of the Ring is over, but there is obviously more that will happen. This means that each person can customize the ending for themselves any number of times, wich adds to the overall experience. This is just my thoughts on the matter of course, but whatever.
