I witnessed a debate on this subject yesterday. It was quite interesting and got into topics like how swords aren't practical in today's modern warfare, and the idea that guns take no skill to use, but I'm just curious to see what you think is cooler. I don't really care about the why.

When I think of people who are into guns, I see all the States between California and New York, I see Arkasas, Mississippi, I see Montana. I see Cowboy hats and Country Music.
When I think of People who are into guns, I see Rednecks and Gangstas.

Swords,
Swords have a certain elegance to them... Especially Samurai Swords, true works of art, hand crafted, hand made. Plus there is something about swords in action that is so much better than guns in action. For Example, Movies. Sword Duals have great choreography, Princess Bride, Star Wars(light sabers are swords), Kill Bill, Last Samurai, etc.... I don't get the same feeling from gun shoot out scenes. The Sword is graceful and deadly at the same time.

I vote for Swords to be cooler.

I can't disagree with you at all. I do have to say that there is one movie with beautifully choreographed gunplay, and that's Equilibrium, particularly the scene near the end of the movie. That's really the only thing that movie has going for it though.

I have never heard of it... is it worth renting for the gun scene, or is it just a pile with one good scene....?

It's worth a rent, I think. Not worth purchasing though.

Sci-fi. Just to give you a little bit of backround, the film takes place in the future, and (here's the really corny part) people take drugs to suppress their emotions. The film is about the conflict between the totalitarian government and the sense-offenders, or those who refuse to take the drugs in order to be able to experience emotion.

Guns are better. Whoever says they do not take skill should be given a Colt M16A4 and be forced to fight with an equally equipped ex-Delta Force soldier in an urban environment. We'll see how much skill it takes.

I'll admit, swords are pretty cool, espcially katanas (not ninja swords - they were straight and cheap, and nowhere near as versatile)... Still, unless you have active camo (trust me the government is pretty close) it seems kind of pointless when going up against opponents carrying firearms. One thing I hate in movies (unless it's anime where they can move _really_ fast) is when people block bullets with swords. I mean, even if they did manage to get the sword in the way of the bullet, the 5.56mm rounds fired by most assault rifles can penetrate 3.5" of steel.

Oh, and Equilibrium was nice, but basically the story and "gun-kata" sucked. I know some people who think it's better than the first Matrix, but... uh... No.

Guns DO take skill to use. If they didn't, anyone should be able to pick up a gun and fire perfectly their first time.

if the question is "which are cooler?" then i'd have to vote swords. there's a grace and style used in swordplay that just can't be duplicated with guns. i guess being of japanese descent, and having been exposed to that history plays a big part in my vote.

-S

While I couldn't say which is "cooler," per se, I would say that swords have much more honor in their history that firearms. And while it's true that an experienced gunman could easily defeat the inexperienced, there is something intrinsicly more amazing and beautiful about a fight between two experienced swordsmen.

Edit- Though, yes, the gunkata in Equilibrium is cool, it is also impracticle and unrealistic and not what a real close quarters gunfight would look like. So, I don't think it makes a suitable argument.

I think this debate was ended with the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Guy screams while twirling a sword, Indy pulls out his revolver and smokes him. Period.

I think you mis-understood the original post, not which is better. Obviously Guns can kill better than swords....

Swords, definitley swords. Because you do not have to have a permit to buy one! and you are allowed to carry them around in plain view!

Where do you live that you can do that?
Somthing tells me the local police would not be too hot on that idea. Most pocket knives are looked down upon around here. California that is...

Yeah, but a lot of bad -blam!- happens in California. I live in a small town, and they prolly wouldn't care if you had one.

Chesapeake, Virginia. You are not allowed to unsheath the sword in public.I looked online and didn't understand the wording of the law so I asked a real cop. oh yeah...you have to be 18 or older to carry them but if you are a minor you can buy it if you parents are at the store and tell the clerk that He/She gives consent for you to buy the weapon

I don't mind.

In Washington, it's illegal for minors to carry Butterfly Knives in public, so walking around with a sword would definitely earn unwanted attention.

Swords, becuase they are more honourable. You can shot someone with no danger to your self, but the opponent always has a chance to defend himself in a sword fight. They also require more than a gun does: strength, movement, form, endurance, and quick thinking. Don't get me wrong, guns do take skill to use, but they don't take brains. You don't really have to remember anything like forms, defenses, and styles.

I was trying to prove the point that guns take an equal amount of skill, if not more than swords. The only difference is that strength and speed matter when using a sword, whereas with guns reflexes and aim matter.

Also, I think guns are cooler. Swords make you either look like you're:
a) an anime fan with no life
b) a renaissance fair loser

Whereas guns make you look like you're:
a) a redneck
b) going to kill someone
c) a police officer

Edit: Xeroh, why do you hate "gangstas?" It's a lifestyle. And yes, most of them do deal in drugs, though the killings don't really happen at the rate the media says they do...

And you think the list you made under the guns is a good thing???? (excluding Police, we need them) I actually don't own either of the two, not really into collecting that kind of stuff, but if I did, I would rather have a sword mounted above the mantle than a gun. They are prettier, except maybe some of the old school muskets and stuff from history... that reminds me... anyone seen "lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"? Cool Guns in that movie, and I mean the two old ones.
