Easy there.. don't start getting worked up just yet. We're not blizting Bungie.net with ads anytime soon..... however, it is something we continue to discuss and evaluate as time goes by. If and when we ever do have any type of ads or "sponsors" on our site, you shoud rest easy knowing that our ultimate goal would be to only do this in a way that didn't negatively impact our community experience or compromise our website. That said, Bnet is a big deal and now that Bungie is off on its own, it's hard to ignore the potential boost that we could get from a few smartly placed ads or partnerships. We sort of have "ads" right now with our Bungie Store banner on the front page and we've had some sponsorship/partner branding in the past with the "Powered by F5" slogan appearing at the bottom of the site.

Nowadays this seems to be all too common... almost every popular website offers some form of ads. Some are minor and inoffensive and barely more than a company logo at the footer of a page. Others are obnoxious pop-ups and click-through pages that make you want to smash your PC monitor.

I'm curious to get some feedback from you, our loyal website members, about what types of things would and wouldn't be cool with you. How much is too much? What would potentially be most upsetting to you - the product/company an ad represented or the way in which that ad was presented? If the core Bungie.net experience remains intact and infact potentially gets even better with the possibility of more funding, would you even care if we had some ads here and there?

Again, if and when we ever do embark down this path we will make sure that we do it in a smart way - adding ads that don't hurt the experience and don't destroy our aesthetic in addition to working with partners that we respect and products we personally use anyways and are relevant to our community.

For now it's all up in the air but I'm curious what our community thinks about this type of thing...

Discuss.

I'm fine with ads, just so long as the site isn't COVERED with them.

Pop-up ads are a no-no.

Oh, and I hate when I'm going to a page, but another page comes up and I have to click to continue.

Dianna Agron is the epitome of perfection.

Quinntology.

Honestly, ads are annoying if they clutter up too much of a space. Pop-ups are annoying and should be banned from all sites. I'd personally be fine with an ad on maybe the top or side of a page. Not like anyone actually pays attention to them though...

The only problem I could see personally with website advertisements would be if they took place in the form of a pop-up. Easily, the most obnoxious kind of advertising method imaginable. An insurance salesman at my door might be preferable. However, if the ads themselves are placed fairly cozily in the site (such as along margins, with a preset box to contain them), there shouldnt be a problem.

Of course, while I doubt it would happen, certain advertisments would be inadvisable due to the inherent moral fibre that some people possess (i.e. Girls gone Wild ads).

Design wise, advertisments that color in nicely with the blues used by the website would be best as well. Seeing a bright orange banner on the side of a largely blue webpage would be a serious eyesore.

Ads... as much as I dislike them, I understand their is a requirement to have them to some degree. The world dosen't continue to revolve on best wishes and I.O.Us

I'm all for the ads as long as they relate to the community. Ads about facial scrubs and pet shampoo just dosen't seem to fit!

Just make sure the ads are not those roll-over, pop up ads! They get in the way and are too annoying to click through.

Definitely no pop-up ads. Those are much to annoying. As for everything else, as long as they don't distract a user from the website (such as an overly large and flashy banner) they would be fine with me.

The ads must also be "clean". By this I mean no ads that may be interpreted as being suggestive in any way.

Just normal, stationary, picture or text ads would be OK. If they fitted with the site. Sort of like... How Penny Arcade do it. [:

No moving ones, pop-ups, in-line ads, Google Word Thingies, redirects, none with sound etc. etc...

shhhhhhh

I'm fine with ads. Just so they're not the annoying kind. Ones that might expand to fill the whole page if you move your cursor over, ones with sound, or anything like that. If they're not annoying, then the content in them can be anything. If you choose to advertise AXE Body Spray, go right ahead.

For placement, I think the center column on the front page, or as a banner on the bottom of the forums would be decent.

Ok so... we should:

1. Pepper the site with full-screen pop-ups
2. Interrupt every page load with an intermediate page that forces an ad in your face
3. Advertise for "Girls Gone Wild", Face scrubs and Kitty Litter.

Got it! :)

Seriously though, we would never consider pop-ups or invasive ads of any sort. If anything we're talking about a nicely integrated banner ad here or there and maybe a logo on a page footer or header. And even then this is all still purely hypothetical.

thanks for the feedback, keep it coming!

Estne volumen in toga an solum tibi libet me videre?

Nothing suits me like a suit.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

Please, no pop-ups, those ads that open and take up your whole screen, or any of those 'You're the 999,999th visitor this site' adds, or anything with games to win 'free' prizes. Anything with sound is something bad.

A banner ad here and there wouldn't do much. Something along the footer of the site like the Ideal Science add is fine. More things on the Partners section would be fine to. An occasional add a long the header of something would be fine to. Just don't make it to big. No adds by Google, please.

  • 12.12.2007 5:09 PM PDT

I'm not that active, but never dead.

I think ads would be a very nice addition to Bungie.net website, under one condition: They are all Bungie approved. I, for one, wouldn't mind having bungie tell me what kind of cards they have in the computers, or even what kind of computers they use themselves, another good idea would be games that Bungie are currently playing, etc, etc. I mean, we've already seen stuff like this before, in some of the vidocs, there's already been product placement of various things. Weather or not Bungie got paid for them, I don't know. For example, in the beginning of one of the vidocs, Frankie starts out in a Starbucks shop. That's product placement, one way or another. I'm fine with that, because Bungie actually goes to that shop.

What I DO NOT WANT IN ANY FORM AT ALL:

"Free Web based RPG ads"
"Ads that are not in any way related to gaming, bungie, electronics, gender specific, clothing, dating websites, social networking websites(Sorry Fyreball)"
"Ads that promote anything that is related to drugs, sex, Rx, etc."
"Ads that go against the Terms of Use, Code of Conduct, and Bungie way"

I think most everyone that goes to this website would agree with these statements, in some way or another.

How big would these header or footer logos be? Obviously they wouldnt be like glaring pus-oozing sores on a wall, but still... Should we expect something around the size of the the 'Ideal Science' logo at the footer, or slightly larger, such as 80x80 (pixels)?

Also, would the site (perhaps) include a feature to disable ads? I know that animated ads can seriously eat up processing power (at least, when your video card is an Nvidia TNT 2 like mine!) when you've got a slightly less-than-quick computer.

I really don't like the idea of any more ads than the few that are already here, but as long as they wouldn't be invasive I could live with them. If they were similar to the Ideal Science logo/link at the bottom of each page, I probably wouldn't be bothered.

A banner at the bottom of the page wouldn't be too bad, but one things I love about B.net, as do many others, is that it's really community based and feels friendly. Placing a moticable advertisement on the site will take away from what many of us have come to love about this great site. I love the fact that I'm not being sold something everytime I come here, unlike most other websites.

  • 12.12.2007 5:22 PM PDT

If it were just a small, subtle advertisement, I wouldn't mind.

Personally, I think that that moderately-gray DIV that already holds the Ideal Science image would make a good place for ads, as long as the ads aren't taller than, say, 50 pixels, and then the images could be put in a horizontal line.

If we had to get ads, I'd prefer them on the side of the page where there is room. Also, I'd rather not have to deal with those pesky ads that "fly out" to get a larger area for the ad, forcing you to close it to click or read what became smothered by it.

If anyone here visits MSN on a regular basis, you know what I mean.

As long as they are gaming related (preferably Halo related) I wouldn't mind too much. Seeing an ad saying "MLGpro.com" or "Halo3forum.com" etc etc I wouldn't mind at all.

Even things from other more communal based sites would be good, things like 1up or Kotaku. I don't think anyone wants any Gamespot ads though <_<

Do what you can, says I, just keep them AWAY from Groups pages and such. I think that would be a little incentive to find a position in a group, no ads.

Any plans for a B.net Gold Member in a few years time? I would pay $10 to be a member here and it would cut out a lot of problems such as needing advertising and spammers on alt accounts if they can't even get into half the site.

I don't really want to see adds on the site but I do see the possible income you guys could get. So...

Also I would like to add:
Nothing to do with mortgage rates.
Nothing that constantly flashes.
None of the stupid little game like ads.

Being at the top and/or bottom of the page and the product that they are selling should be interesting enough that they don't have to use gimmicks to have people click on their ads.

P. S. Thanks for asking our opinion first.

Would you be requiring ads on every page?

The reason I ask is that I can understand ads being on the main site (where news, jobs, bungie store etc are located) and adds in the main forum sites where the different thread titles are found. I don't really see the need for ads to be located within the threads where the conversations are occuring. For ads to acheive their desired result, they would need to be where the highest volume of b.net members are all browsing, ie the main pages. But in the actual threads, only those interested or taking actively involved in the thread are lurking. I don't really believe that ads are required there.

I hope that all makes sense?
