Wow! Finally! Here you go... I have to warn you that it isn't worth it. Such a failure this week. I would rather have not had an update at all.

I like ads...

Especially the ones that are like 'Click the button before Little Jimmy is eaten by a Stingray!'

I love watching little Jimmy die...

*develish smile*

Took me awhile to realize this topic was made today, or I woulda awnsered sooner.

But yeah, ads are cool with me, especially if they entertain little Halo related (fine, maybe not Halo related) games...

....But imagine how friggin cool that would be?! 'Press the red button to punch Regret!'

*Pushpushpushpushpush*

Congratulations!

I get more ass than a toilet seat.

Yes i would say a banner on the bottom of the forum pages would be good only if they related to something gaming....

Formerly known as BASs13 and One Point Three

Maybe a small ad up top next to the Bungie logo like a "sponsored by ____" or another banner at the very bottom.

Professional ads that are somewhat relevant to what Bungie does.

...but if costs become too high for site maintenance, I would support anything to keep it up.

Bungie, oh Bungie, oh Bungie,
Know what would really be fun, G?
I don’t wish to nag
But remake Coag,
Or die from a purple sword-lungie.

I'm fine with ads, just so long as the site isn't COVERED with them.

Pop-up ads are a no-no.

Oh, and I hate when I'm going to a page, but another page comes up and I have to click to continue.

But really, I am fine with ads, as long as it keeps my favorite website up...

I don't really care much anymore, I am used to Gamespot, Addictinggames and Miniclip adds, so fear not...

we all know that a Viagra banners would be normal scenery for a couple of our mods, but the rest of us shouldn't have to click on that kind of thing for at least 2-3 more years...

seriously, all joking aside, i'm on the fence with this. one of the things i've always loved about bnet is that there's basically no ads. nothing is in my face other than Achronos' text.

how much is too much? that's a good question. i think another good question would be "How far will this evolve?" or "What is the limit and has there been a limit discussed?".

i want to put more thought into this...my initial thinking is that i wouldn't want to see any ads in any of the forums, accept for maybe Nickelodeon ads in the flood, and the stats pages should stay free and clear.

the first positive thing coming to mind is the fact that this would open up great opportunities for smaller up-and-coming community member's projects/websites/start-ups to get some acknowledgment and business. think of how much easier it would have been for RvB to get things rolling (not that they needed help) back in the day.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I wouldn't actually mind an ad or two. However, I would ask that they be stilframe pictures, and not some animated thing. I think you've already said that, but I just wanted to reinforce the point that moving or flashing ads really detract from the experience.

Aside from that, I also agree with some things that have already been mentioned. I wouldn't mind a side banner ad, since we have so much room there. An ad at that bottom wouldn't be bad either. Also, I would hope that the ads were designed to look good on the site. This site is beautifully designed, and I'd hate to see it brought down by some poorly thought-out image.

I like Alex's idea of having you guys select advertisements for things that you actually approve of. This would make it harder to have a large number or advertisers at one time, but I think it would pay off. If I saw a picture of something, and I knew that it was personally Bungie approved, I would be much more inclined to check it out. A nice side effect of this would be that since each ad is picked by hand, it would allow those ads to be designed specifially to mesh well with Bungie.net in terms of appearance.

I know that there is a draw these days towards just throwing up as many ads as possible, but I really think that having specific ads would be a much better way to go. Advertisers would be willing to work with you guys to get their names on a page with such a massive traffic load, and it would be a service to us, as consumers, to point us towards items that we might really be interested in.

This would be great, but you've got to remember that Bungie is not a charity. They have bills to pay and mouth to feed. And now that they have cut the apron strings and are effectively doing it on their own, there is a need to generate income to feed those bills and pay those mouths!

B.net has a high volume of traffic, so what better way to generate income than to "sell" that little bit of web space to clients to advertise. I would imagine that said virtual space would not come cheap, imo.

A great place to add advertising would be next to the "Powered by Ideal Science 2005" on the bottom of these forums. Another place would be on the homepage above "Partners", add "Sponsors". As how sponsors go, I recommened legit ones such as how marketing was done for Halo 3, such as Burger King. Other sponsors probably better such as Rooster Teeth.

Another Great way to advertise is to have Forum Avatars that involve sponsors.

bungie not a charity? funny, i'm wearing a "halo fans for hurricane relief 2005" shirt as i type this. come on dude, you know they'll throw something up for their peeps whenever possible.

i agree that every pixel of virtual space provided by bungie will be worth more than my car, but think of it this way....i can see it now:

"The Discovery Channel is proud to present The Classic Map Pack with old favorites such as Lockout, Midship, Waterworks and many many more brought to you by our show Dirty Jobs!"

a little cheddar for bungie. a little somthin' somthin' for the fans. it's money baby and they don't even know it!

Personaly, ads on a site makes any site look very, unproffesional. Ads for one, are just annoying. They either have some sort of annoying animation, or annoying sound, which would send users fleeing the site. This forum and site, are very much different from other Gaming sites. Its easy to use and easy to read, adds may complicate things, and crowed other importantent infomation.

My answer to ads: No.

In my opinion, at least in this iteration of the site, I can't see very many places where advertising would really fit without hurting the experience of people who frequent the site. I don't want the content to be pushed down because of an ad. Or blocked because of a pop-up. Or delayed because of a "click here to continue" page. That's just asking for the content not to be seen. but you guys know that.

Footer ad space would be fine, although content on BNet is normally so long that a lot of advertisers probably wouldn't feel like footer space is worth it.

I think that you guys should always personalize your ads. Make them flow with the site. Maybe design them yourself, or design a format or template that all advertisers would have to follow in order to advertise here. And, of course, make sure you have respectable ads. I don't want to see any ads inviting me to get in a button-mashing boxing fight with Barack Obama, okay?

I'm not saying that Bungie is not charitable, or do charitable things, and we know that they will throw the community a little sumthing. I'm just saying that ads on b.net is a lucrative area of income generation that Bungie should explore, and should charge heavily for! Without M$ and their coffers, the bills and mouths are still there, requiring feeding on both parts.

I think ads would not only affect how people navigated through the site, but it would also say a lot about Bungie itself... if you follow what I'm saying.

I have no issue with somewhat related ads.

I will beat someone with a wet fish if there are pop-ups.

Personally, I have 2.5 ish inches of pure blue grid pattern on each side of the forum.

You could do anything you want with that area.

I would also request that a single click doesn't launch anything. (only a double click?) Scrolling with a laptop can click things every once and awhile.

I don't see any problem of adding ads to the site.
As long as none of them are pop-ups, or ones you have to "click here to continue" ones.

I'm not that active, but never dead.

I also agree on the idea of no flashing things. Nothing animated. If there is going to be ads, NO .GIFS, NO FLASH, NO JAVA.

Pretty much nothing annoying or offending.

This is a tricky area. On instinct, I say capitalism all the way. I think a dedicated sponsors page would be quite cool and welcome.

The biggest thing to me is that I would want advertising (somewhat) related to Bungie, I know this would be hard, but I would like to see a good relationship between Bungie and their sponsors. There is only so much input you can get from us, and most of it you have already expected.

For me it would be about segregation. I would not mind seeing ads on:

1. The Homepage
2. Projects Pages
3. Bungie Online
4. Support

Just be VERY light on the forums and stat pages. That is where I spend most of my time and I consider it my holy sanctuary of peace. (ahh yes, the peace of the H3 forums.)

Besides, you get most of your traffic off of the forums

Okay, so people don't want popups, it seems :-)

As long as its nothing with flash, Java, or moving pictures that you must punch to win a Ferrari, and pertains to a gaming community, then I'm fine with it.

"nothing to contribute to any forums . . . and I'm fed up with all the [spam] in those forums . . . . So yeah, screw you guys. I'm going to 4chan."
How ironic....

I'm fine with ads as long as there are no pop-ups or huge ads. Furthermore, I would prefer ads that would fit the theme of the website. Video game and movie ads would be fine.

My gamertag is SHADOWRIDERJP.

No pop-ups as the others have said or click here to continue ones. Also, no "Click here to win!" even though advertisers might love that in the Halo 3 forum. <_<

I don't mind ads that aren't invasive, I ignore them and hardly notice them anyway.
