Good to see at least somebody takes this place seriously

I am sincerely disappointed in everyone except JIMH. JIMH, have a gold star.

',:\ IF YA SAHMELLLL

A Nike logo on the bottom of the page is fine, but I don't like the idea of having 20 eye sores on the sides of pages like youtube. Basically something that isn't flashy and obtrusive, essentially nothing moving. Also, I don't want these ads to be for nothing. I want actual improvements to the forums; the long promised group upgrades/ revamping, improvements to the very lacking search feature, things everyone can enjoy on the forums. If the ads are just to fatten Bungie pockets, I want no part of it.

My opinion:

I have been coming to this site everyday for the past few years and I like Bungie.net the way it is, granted there are so called ads like "Powered by F5/Ideal Science" and the Bungie Store, but I can tolerate those since they are related to the site - software to run the site and promote world domination by purchasing Bungie branded shirts. If ads were added to the pages, whether it be those long ones at the top of a page or on the side or ads between posts every once in a while and so forth, it would, to me, take away from the "officialness" and the simple-yet-satisfying feel of Bungie.net. It would make the website seem as though it was just another ploy to collect money instead of a gathering place for Bungie fans. (Instead of the Bungie Community banner holding lightning bolts it will be holding dollar signs)

Besides, ads have no color scheme you can choose from, so some ads would stick out like a sore thumb on Bungie.net's dark color palette. However, maybe the increased revenue could be used to finally buy everyone all of those steak dinners Luke owes us.

Has Bungie fled from MS and now finds itself low on cash? Did you have to pay THAT much to get away from Mr. Bill? I don't see why it is necessary unless you need the cash. Generally speaking, it's seems a little unprofessional of a company to sell advertising to another company on said companies web site. You don't see UPS or WalMart or, dare I say, Blizzard injecting adverts on their site peddling another companies goods or services. That being said, I don't really care as long as it's not intrusive.

AdBlock - FTW!

I wouldn't mind them... As long as they aren't; Google ads, or those stupid smiley face ads that make werid noises when you mouse over them.

  • 12.13.2007 11:42 AM PDT

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

A nice idea that I've seen put in action by a certain site is to put the ad banner at the very bottom of the page under the copyright and rating. They also have a report button for the ads so you can know if an advertiser is putting up an ad you(Bungie) do not want.

It's perfect because it does not affect you if it is placed on the bottom of the page and there are no pop-ups.

Ads are annoying and will take away from the beauty and simplicity of the site!!

Here, we see what happened when Bungie allowed ads on their website.

Fooling around aside, I want Bungie to remain a place I will continue to come back to in the future. This is my most-visited site, and I don't want it to become a warehouse for ads. I can deal with some ads, just not the flashy ones, pop-ups, any "games," gift card ads, etc, etc.

If Bungie were to have ads, at least make them related to the games, electronics, items, and anything else Bungie likes and thinks we would like them too.

My main opinion on ads for Bungie are mixed in with other posts people have already made. (AlexZander, Foman, Saint)

They tend to always move and can't be on a website without being completely retarded, IMO.
Slap Chris Crocker? Or play Halo 3? I pick Halo 3.

And thanks, that's what I was working on while you guys were discussing.

As a Squirrel Ninja I do hereby promise to uphold our traditions, beliefs, and secrets, to recruit and induct Squirrel Ninjas who represent our ideals with pride, and to defend our traditions at all costs to myself with no exception. As a Squirrel Ninja I promise this until I die, or can’t physically or mentally uphold the ways of the Squirrel Ninja.

I just thought of something that I would definitely NOT want to see. No PM ads, as in ads that are sent to us through the PM system.

I'm not sure if Bungie ever thought of doing that, but it's best to shoot down the idea right now.

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

I have two perspectives on the issue, so here they are.

Perspective One

I think a-lot of concern about advertising on Bungie.net comes from the community's self-preservation mode. The community is hesitant to accept new things because we are scared that they might change the Bungie we have come to love. We want Bungie to always be the same: funny, great, awesome, caring, loving, interactive, and mom approved. I think that people fear the changing of Bungie.net because it could change what is the community and Bungie. If it effects Bungie, then it effects the users. It can change the way people look at Bungie.net, interact with Bungie.net, or how they love Bungie.net. It is like a "God save the King, expel the foreign barbarians" deal.

Perspective Two

I think that responsible, low-key, and aesthetically pleasing advertising could benefit Bungie.net. If Bungie is able to gain the support of large companies, larger Soffishes, they can profit and bring in some potentially good business and even deals for Bungie/Bungie.net. We could see promotion deals, contests, etc., for the community perhaps? I believe the best way to utilize advertisements would be like the way Bungie.net front page has linked to Ensemble Studios, Bungie.net Store, and other things. It is not saying "OMG BUY ME CAUSE I WHORE MY PRODUCT IN YOUR FACE" if you get my point.

Really, if you guys decide to advertise, please try to remain the same ol' Bungie.net. Please leave the side of the site alone too, I had to find a new part of the site to love because the Nav Bar is in Barwaii.

My major issue is the fallout of community interactivity and the "down-home" feel of Bungie.net. Any advertising that can benefit the community is a plus. I want Bungie.net to be my Bungie.net as always, I want it to continue being my precious slice of Internet heaven.

As a web-surfer, I dearly despize advertising. Yes, it's not going to be be implemented in a nice, non-obnoxious way... But I don't even like subtle advertising at all. It doesn't benefit me in any way, and just annoys me.

But who am I kidding? I love Bungie. If anything, I want you guys to have more money in your pockets; I love you guys. You guys are very reasonable, and would never do anything like pop-ups or blatant advertising. Perhaps a nice little banner here and there, Or snuffing a sucker in the little "empty" sections on the front page?

Just leave the forums out of it, and I'm good.

It wouldn't bother me if you guys put ads on here. But please, make sure they are just little banners on the side or something. I don't want to see those incredibly annoying popups all the time like on ultimate-guitar.com.

There is nothing I could really say that hasn't been said already in this thread. Obviously no intrusive ads in anyway, and ones that relate to the community somehow ( Although I am curious aboutwhat type of Kitty Litter to get, I'm sure I can find that out somewhere else ;-) ).

Anyways, one point I would like to say is that a good chunk of the people here are Xbox "fanboys". I don't want contraversy over this, but I can safely guess that a large portion of the members here are. Perhaps play on that note?

I love seeing ads for games, as long as they're good games. I would have never known about a lot of the games I own without seeing ads around.

Have a good one.

I'd be perfectly fine with any sort of banners as long as they don't clash with the layout. Of course, that may be difficult to ensure if you guys opt to go with a network, but it wouldn't be that irritating to me. No interstitials, popins, context-sensitive links, etc, etc.

Are you elite?? join Elites of War

I wouldnt mind if there were some banner ads. One thing that i would not like to see is sponsered activities or content, etc. I dont know how to explain it exactly. But it would be something like they do on myspace all the time. Ex( Get these new layouts for your group or home page, sponsored by Mt. Dew. and then every layout etc, is smothered with Dew logos. ) Stuff like that just gets on my nerves big time.

No problems from this guy, as long as they don't interrupt things too much, or just randomly pop-up on the screen. I definitely wouldn't mind them if they were just on the homepage, in an attractive fashion.

Little smaller ads such as the Powered by ideal science ad a the bottom of the page would be fine, but if I have to see flashing stuff at me while i scroll down the page it would be very untidy looking and would discourage me from wanting to come here.

NO POP UPS either.

And, bungie has to be in control of whats ads go onto the site. I suspect they will be but I have seen a site where an outside company provides the ads without checking them to see what they are.

in short

Small ads are fine.

Large flashy ads are unwanted by me.

If ads are to come, at least have them fit the colour scheme of the site. I don't wana scroll through the nice, easy-on-the-eyes blue, and suddenly see a huge bright yellow/green picutre telling me "YOU ARE THE 500TH VISITOR!".

Also, absolutally NO flash ads, though I assume that's a given. But you can never be too safe. Some nice, static, non-animated ads would fit well.

I am fine with ads, I just hope they're targeted ads with the appropriate level of Bungie intervention. A quick glance around a lot of the ads on the internet is enough to tell you that clicking on them probably isn't the greatest idea. I have no problem supporting companies that advertise on BNet, I just don't want my computer violated by the sleaze of the web for it.

  • 12.14.2007 5:54 AM PDT

You say tomato; I say potato.

I was just thinking how ad free this site was. It is a huge relief to find a site that doesn't cause a lot of distractions.

Any plans for a B.net Gold Member in a few years time? I would pay $10 to be a member here and it would cut out a lot of problems such as needing advertising and spammers on alt accounts if they can't even get into half the site.
I would like this idea better than having ads, but I need some more profile customization before I'd pay.

Oh, come one. Imaging a flash animation with a wall, kool-Aid Man busting through it, and then the words , "Oh yeah!" come on the screen That would be full of win. I would definitely use that.
