I have two perspectives on the issue, so here they are.
Perspective One
I think a-lot of concern about advertising on Bungie.net comes from the community's self-preservation mode. The community is hesitant to accept new things because we are scared that they might change the Bungie we have come to love. We want Bungie to always be the same: funny, great, awesome, caring, loving, interactive, and mom approved. I think that people fear the changing of Bungie.net because it could change what is the community and Bungie. If it effects Bungie, then it effects the users. It can change the way people look at Bungie.net, interact with Bungie.net, or how they love Bungie.net. It is like a "God save the King, expel the foreign barbarians" deal.
Perspective Two
I think that responsible, low-key, and aesthetically pleasing advertising could benefit Bungie.net. If Bungie is able to gain the support of large companies, larger Soffishes, they can profit and bring in some potentially good business and even deals for Bungie/Bungie.net. We could see promotion deals, contests, etc., for the community perhaps? I believe the best way to utilize advertisements would be like the way Bungie.net front page has linked to Ensemble Studios, Bungie.net Store, and other things. It is not saying "OMG BUY ME CAUSE I WHORE MY PRODUCT IN YOUR FACE" if you get my point.
Really, if you guys decide to advertise, please try to remain the same ol' Bungie.net. Please leave the side of the site alone too, I had to find a new part of the site to love because the Nav Bar is in Barwaii.
My major issue is the fallout of community interactivity and the "down-home" feel of Bungie.net. Any advertising that can benefit the community is a plus. I want Bungie.net to be my Bungie.net as always, I want it to continue being my precious slice of Internet heaven.
