I'm fine with them aslong as they're not in-your face.

Oh, and no charities.

in addition to what i've already posted, and without trying to sound selfish, i think the community should get something out of this. not as much as bungie of course, but a few maps would be nice (i bought the maps dec 11th...this is not a complaint).

i guess my point is that everyone that is going to be affected by this should get something out of it. i wouldn't mind if this site stayed the same as it is now. the recent changes are very nice imo and they will also help with the way things go around here.

I FEAR CHANGE!!eleven!1!

i'm still on the fence with this but i'm leaning towards wanting things to stay ad free simply because i welcome anything that makes this site original and the ad free layout as of now is quite welcoming and unique.

i'm also worried about the evolution of this. say ads are put into place and the revenue generated is overwhelming. what next? emailed ads? ads you have to skip through before viewing your stats?

if ( !now ){ when(); }

Sorry, too much to read.... but I get the jist of it all.

My vote is NO.

I get inundated with ads constantly. They are everywhere, b.net is a sanctuary to me.

Now I would consider changing my vote if it helped to keep the site running, but even then I never click on an web page ad.

Next you will be asking if it is okay for you to email us with offers from your business partners. @ that point, I would consider Bungie a sellout just like Metallica.

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

I wouldn't entirely mind there being ads in places that don't interrupt the flow of the site. I would prefer them to be gaming oriented, but I doubt it will be like that if it does happen.

I just feel like this could snowball into something bigger. I know Bungie has always not wanted ads, then they sell a few. Then some more. Then even more, so it's worse than the likes of myspace and msn. I'm really just worried that if Bungie starts to add new things to the site solely for revenue, it will become bigger and bigger, and will alienate a lot of the fanbase.

I am also entirely against the "Gold" member thing. It is rather unfair to those of us who have been at Bungie for a bit, and then have to pay to get little extras, but can't because of being under 18. It was hard enough to convince my parents to allow me to have XBOX Live and new maps, even when I offered to pay for them. It's not the actual spending of money, it's the fact that I would be spending money on something they deem unnecessary. I would probably end up upset if this were to happen, unless it doesn't affect the circumstances as they are now, but only enhances it for the Gold members.

-My two cents-

Ads would be great for 'bungie', but not it's users. I get enough ads in the rest of my life.

Seriously how much money dose Bungie need? Are you guys serious about the whole 'World Domination" thing? Otherwise, there is no need for you guys to try and get me to buy someone else's product.

Don't succumb to that big fat check, and whore out B.net by the pixel.

NO POP UPS

I'll have them permanently blocked anyway.

Ads aren't bad just no pop ups

  • 12.14.2007 11:58 PM PDT

Adds wouldn't be a problem as long as they're 'not a problem'. If they don't effect the performance of the site or irritate corneas and cause siezures than I think most, including myself, wouldn't have any sort of objections to advertising on B.net.

I visit another gaming forum that had adds, they had a problem with inappropirate "adult" adds popping up all the time, as long as the adds are appropriate and NOT popups, i dont see the problem with ads..

Do your worst, Adblocker plus on Firefox is amazing. So I'll never see them. In general if your going to do it keep it related to what your working on and keep them them within the site.

I have no problem with you guys adding ads to the site. It's a great source of some revenue. However, if the ads are pop ups that screw with your mind or trick you into clicking them, then no. But you guys are smart, you'll figure a good way to put ads on the site.

Twitter | Nothing

I've read most of this thread and think everything I am going to say now has been covered anyway but I'll still give my opinion on the matter.

It seems that everywhere you go on the internet these days there are advertisements. I can understand in most cases why they are there and what purpose they have. A lot of sites don't have any other source of income and if they want to keep the site up they need some way to pay for hosting and such. This isn't the case for Bungie. Their source of income primarily comes from developing and then selling video games. And when they were with Microsoft I assume that they paid the bills when it came to the web costs.

Now that Bungie are once again independent its understandable that they need to watch whats coming in and going out. Adverts can provide a great way to earn some extra revenue to help cover the costs of the site, and it means that the members and visitors don't have to pay subscription fee's. But if adverts were going to come along to this site then I feel that that the web team would have to be very careful with the ads they use and the way they are presented. I don't think anyone here wants any flashing "You are the 1,000,000" visitor" or "Click here to win great prizes" ads. Also, I think that nothing should interfere with the actual layout or feel of the forums and the site. The ads should fit the colour scheme and the style of Bungie.net.

I personally would not mind if there was some ads on the site, as long as they are not in your face and they are game related. Saying that though I always loved this place because there weren't any ads. It just makes it feel more personal, like its just the fans and the developers without ads.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Easy there.. don't start getting worked up just yet. We're not blizting Bungie.net with ads anytime soon..... however, it is something we continue to discuss and evaluate as time goes by. If and when we ever do have any type of ads or "sponsors" on our site, you shoud rest easy knowing that our ultimate goal would be to only do this in a way that didn't negatively impact our community experience or compromise our website. That said, Bnet is a big deal and now that Bungie is off on its own, it's hard to ignore the potential boost that we could get from a few smartly placed ads or partnerships. We sort of have "ads" right now with our Bungie Store banner on the front page and we've had some sponsorship/partner branding in the past with the "Powered by F5" slogan appearing at the bottom of the site.

Nowadays this seems to be all too common... almost every popular website offers some form of ads. Some are minor and inoffensive and barely more than a company logo at the footer of a page. Others are obnoxious pop-ups and click-through pages that make you want to smash your PC monitor.

I'm curious to get some feedback from you, our loyal website members, about what types of things would and wouldn't be cool with you. How much is too much? What would potentially be most upsetting to you - the product/company an ad represented or the way in which that ad was presented? If the core Bungie.net experience remains intact and infact potentially gets even better with the possibility of more funding, would you even care if we had some ads here and there?

Again, if and when we ever do embark down this path we will make sure that we do it in a smart way - adding ads that don't hurt the experience and don't destroy our aesthetic in addition to working with partners that we respect and products we personally use anyways and are relevant to our community.

For now it's all up in the air but I'm curious what our community thinks about this type of thing...

Discuss.

I think that traditional Banner ads would be all to cliche and drive people away from the site. Do write ups, reviews, that sort of thing. Certain ads I could tolorate, as long as they keep the neon green and animations to a minimum. It just doens't seem like Bungie to me to have them pasted all over the site.

While I would prefer not to have ads, I think Bungie needs to do what they think is best for them. With the separation from Microsoft (in a business sense), I figured it was only a matter of time before we saw an ad or two. I say go for it if it will increase the quality of the games that Bungie can create. Initially, I'm guessing most users would get annoyed, but they will eventually accept it.

Never, ever, get ads. Teaming up with Microsoft, the biggest software company in the world was one thing, but giving your site ads is a step too far.

Too me, it would be like giving up your site to capitalist propaganda. I'm guessing by boost you mean money. We all know your an independent company now, and you don't have Microsoft to back you up anymore, but is money really what you need?

Any form of ad besides the ones already in place would show your lack of interest in the community. It only clutters the site and ups the processing on our computers.

As long as they're not blinking, flashing, or making noise...

One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny."

Yeah, as long as they aren't right in our face, popping up at random intervals or distracting anyone from doing any B.net related activity.

( Preferably, they should be gaming/halo related adverts. )

IGN advertisements = annoyingly crazy.

Sponsors = AOK.

Just make sure that if there are advertisements, there is NO CLUTTER, and that they aren't on certain sections of the website. For example no advertisements on your "My Stats Page'... or stats pages in general. Thats really a "feature" of the game... I wouldn't really like advertisments there or any where near the "Files Forums" or "My Screenshots".

on places like the Halo 3 forum, I guess I"m ok with unobtrusive advertisements. But I don't really see the point that much.

However certain targeted advertisements are great: MLG, Halo 3 Product, etc advertisements would be GREAT!! Not to mention.. upcoming tournaments and stuff.

The weekly updates already speak "Hype & Advertisements" not sure if more are necesary, but I guess I would be AOK with unobtrusive... and especially targeted advertisements. But keep them appropriate for sure.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I'd prefer this site remain ad free, but I'd imagine some help with the site overhead would be a good thing for us all. I mean, you have this amazing site, which is maintained by a full staff, and you don't really make any money off of it. If ads are necessary to help keep that up, I would not mind them; provided it did not take away from the overall ambiance of this site, nor the functionality of this site.

Say, a non-invasive banner here and there, on the main page, and perhaps in the forums as well probably wouldn't rile too many of us up. I'd rather they stayed out of the groups, and off of the stat pages though. Annoying java ads, those horrid ads where we have to smack something or press a fart button, or anything that makes noise should never be on this site though. I mean ever.

If you do this, make sure to tell us about the awesome pay raises the web team will be receiving shortly after. Actual figures are not needed, but an assurance that a portion of the newly generated revenue is going to the people who put all of it there for you, and the people who made the site marketable to begin with (yourself included Sketch).

Please no. Bungie has enough money to be able to go without ads. They pop up, slow down the site and generally annoy me. Please don't have ads, you can have a few links on the front page like TOP 10 HALO RESOURCE SITES AND COMMUNITIES but that would be enough. No pop-ups and no flashy logos.

I think I have made my opinions clear.
