Halo 3 Sonnet

We are the Bungie community, and thus, by definition, we are given the right to complain about any work that Bungie produces, mentions, or even thinks about, with no limits set by knowledge, logic, common sense, or understanding of sarcasm!

I bet the first people in line would be the guys who want to advertise their forums.
I'm only kidding!
But, even though I don't want advertising, without it this site will be a blackhole which Bungie pours its money into. So I won't mind advertising.

You can put ads on so long as they aren't pop-ups, 'cause they're annoying.

It would be OK to have advertisement, as long as it is relative to Bungie.

That means no you are the lucky 1 000 000 visitor for the 1000th time.

PS: Duardo, #3 would be a huge no.

I am just concerned that this could start to feel like that awkward situation that sometimes occurs with friends. One member of the circle (lets say the guy whose house everyone usually hangs out at), his wife has just become an Amway distributor. Now, when we go by to visit, we get to hear about the latest products and innovations for our home. Sure, I would be polite, smile, nod and listen. I might even buy some. But I don't know if I would look forward to visiting as much as I used to.

this is my forth post in this thread. i never post that much but i've been on the fence about this and for some reason this has really caught my attention. what Recon has posted here has basically finalized my opinion and no ads on bnet is the way i would like things to stay. it's just comfortable around here without ads and it always has been.

bungie.com sounds like a perfect plan b. anything other than ads on bnet sounds like a perfect plan b. hell, i'd pay an anual fee to come here ad free if that's what it would take, it's worth it.

i guess at this point i would like to see examples...

I really like that I can navigate B.net in its entirety without having to look at ads. Until you mentioned the Bungie Store and the like I didn't even think there was ads on B.net.

I would be okay I think if the ads were subtle and related to Bungie, gaming or products relating to either of the forementioned. What I find increasingly annoying are the ads that hijack your browser then give you a "Skip this Ad" button. Those totally destroy the continuity of browsing a website. Personally, I think any flash based ad is cumbersome and ugly (ala myspace). Banners are equally annoying, as it detracts visually from the page format looking as though it was quite literally pasted over the page.

I can't say I am too wild about the idea, but if it was to be implimented it would have to be done right which I realize is super vauge.

This said, I agree with Deaf and Dumb and Recon 54.

Any revenue should be returned back into the website, rather than the generic Bungie coffers. That way we ensure continued development of the website and it's facilities.

In other words:

not to bad, actualy so long as it was 1 ad at a time in the top right (#3) i could deal with it, not a whole banner, and footer ads (#1&2) i wouldnt mind

“…On that day, half a century ago, our species was pushed to the crumbling edge of extinction, and as we teetered on that precipice, staring down into the abyss, a hand reached out, and pulled back from the brink, and gave us hope, The hand of a Hero.”

I'm sure it's been said, but those roll-over ads? NO.

And ads that automatically start playing noises.

And "Shoot the rapper and get his newest CD!"

and full page adver-detours (like IGN... click.... start load WHAMP new page with itsy bitsy little link on top that says "Continue here to IGN.com".... )

I do like the layout and color scheme, but the thought of increased revenue =ing better games is very enticing.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of people are behind whatever judgments you decide to make.

I have always loved the fact that Bnet has been be free as well as relatively ad-free. I kind of prefer what pezza said. I'd much rather see this site supported by its own members than by outside entities through ads. An enhanced membership(sort of like what Rooster Teeth does with sponsors) would seem to be a much better idea than banner ads and such.

I am a proud user of correct spelling and grammar.

I've got an idea:

What if Xbox Live members could add a fixed amount of money (let's say a dollar) to their monthly fee to become an "Advanced Member," or whatever term you prefer. The site would be ad-free and they could get some added benefits from paying extra. Plus it could be tracked by having the member complete a document online or add to their subscription via Account Management. The Xbox Live Marketplace could also be an option for payment (think Bungie Pro).

For non-Xbox Live users, they could sign up to the benefits program with some kind of PayPal method or if there any other ways for billing without Xbox Live, please contribute them.

This really does not work for 2 reasons.

1. There would be no benefit to advanced members. What would they get, a special forum, maybe a special armour permutation in Halo 3 (if that could even be done)?

2. The people who are not paying would still get full use of this site. Therefore, is really fair for some people to pay for this site (their choice or not) while everyone else can use it for free???

It's a nice idea. But it really doesn't seem like it would benefit bungie in the amount of money they really need.

Another topic to throw out there as I already stated would be advertising with forum avatars. I think this would work very well because bungie could advertise without bringing anything out right at your face. However, posters could have these avatars all the time. Therfore, you will be exposed to the advertisements. However, it will not come right out at you.

As I see it, the best option would be one of those verticle things on the right hand side but you would have to move the whole website over to the left to give room. other then that there would be no space for a non intrusive and practical advert.

p.s ABOSLUTELY NO AD'S THAT MAKE THE WEBSITE REQUIRE BROADBAND!

2 things -

didn't bungie make enough money off h3 to not need to worry about money for a very long time?

Also ads are fine as long as they don't distract what we do here.

Also starting up a video on your pc service is a much better way to go at making money.

Keep in mind, though, PyRo, that Bungie is a for-profit corporation, and not a non-profit or an individual. The nature of for-profit corporate entities is to always maximize shareholder value -- that means gaining the most possible profit. As I noted in my long post on page 3 of this thread, I see nothing wrong with a for-profit corporation like Bungie doing what it's designed to do, as long as it meets customer expectations in the process.

Bungie, you take in millions every year. Sure, advertising would be quite a way to get a few extra $ every once and a while, but consider being original... DON'T CONFORM!

(random yet funny signature goes here)

Now that Bungie has split from Microsoft has funds really decreased that much? I mean I know you guys aren't in the hole and having a little extra pocket change is always nice, but is it really to the point that it's necessary? This is a serious concern of mine if you have the time.

"Inveniam Viam Aut Facium" _~

if ( !now ){ when(); }

I change my vote... YES, bungie.net needs, no must have ads.

They also need to drop the forum crap.

All the forums do is breed insolence and dissidents. And I am sick of it.

I have tried to get reasonable answers to reasonable questions, and all I got was off topic spam.

There is a plethora of other community forums. All bungie needs is a dedicated tech-support forum, stat tracking, and file sharing. Everything else is just excess garbage.

So long, and enjoy your wonderful community...
