The Marty Army

Ah, look at the lonely people...

I'll be brief with this:

No Popups
No Intermediary Pages
No Adult Themed Stuff
No Banners that talk/play music/otherwise disrupt my Bnet experience

Perhaps a vertical banner in the spaces on the right/left and a horizontal one at the bottom. I'd prefer not to have anything at the top of the page.

Even, perhaps, an option to disable the ads altogether for registered members?

Adds would make this place a wreak. I do like the company names at the bottom though. Just make sure not to get just anyone to put their ads up. I don't like hearing...
"Congratulations, you have been selected to recieve a free Apple IPhone!"

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

My question is there going to be a way that members can buy some ad time? I know lawyers and rules would have to be laid out but I can see some other community sites and members might want to promote on Bungie.net.

Well putting things into perspective I am going to draw a example from the heroic dlc playlist since I was just on that today. There were 12144 players playing in that play list alone while I was online and since the new maps cost 12.5 U.S. dollars to purchase that's $151,800 worth of heroic map pack downloads. And undoubtedly many many times more people purchased the heroic map pack than that. I have to say it would be much more community and fan oriented if Bungie made the extra revenue it is seeking from producing more maps and charging for them than to compromise there website which already lags because of all the javascript. Ads are just a turn off to any site and even the big ones that have them like IGN, Gamespot, and other gaming sites definitly detract from themselves by having them. Bungie is pristine with its sleek css encoded layout and adding ads no matter how minute would definitely detract from the site.

In seeing Bungie's perspective the website offers a way to make a good profit from having to do no labor which would incur fees. It is a easy way to make a buck without losing any besides paying for the initial advertisement.

As long as it does not flash, contain bright colours or have absolutely nothing relevant for the worldwide public in general that use this website, then fine go ahead with the adds.

The thought of ads is why Pezza was hacked and mods were banned.

  • 12.22.2007 1:49 AM PDT

Run advertisements like Penny Arcade. Unobtrusive, game oriented ads that are for games/products you believe in advertising.

Now, the Ideal Science thing is fine. Just line up the bottom of the page like that- anything down there's going to receive a bazillion hits regardless of where you put them.

I am a Floodian

Don't let the replace forum banners, and don't do the IGN add system where you have an entire page devoted to a 300 x 300 advertisement. If the adds are going to be there, please keep them from being about food stuff, or things that are in no way related to the community.

Advertisements for games from other companies, or even from this company don't need to be there. I find them the most annoying; mostly because I already know everything int he ad.

Keep it relevant and low key please.

"The reason I ask is that I can understand ads being on the main site (where news, jobs, bungie store etc are located) and adds in the main forum sites where the different thread titles are found. I don't really see the need for ads to be located within the threads where the conversations are occuring. For ads to acheive their desired result, they would need to be where the highest volume of b.net members are all browsing, ie the main pages. But in the actual threads, only those interested or taking actively involved in the thread are lurking. I don't really believe that ads are required there."

I am with von zipp i think they would be fine on the main page, but not in the theads. Thanks Von U sumed it up pery good.

I think the only way ads would work is if they were designed to fit in with the site. Thats means only having ads that have to do with gaming (that could be soda and such also, but I'm saying nothing like shampoo, bobs discount furniture etc.) and making sure the coloring of the ad blends in well with the rest of the site. If thats how it was done then I could care less, as long as its not on your player page.

  • 12.25.2007 1:32 PM PDT

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

As long as it's not a pop-up I'm fine. I have adblock for FireFox so if it's just a banner or something I can just block it.

Oh please dont. Ads are the devils spawn and would ruin the site. Its not so much that its annoying, although flash and gif´s are in many cases, but to me it says "we need money". Do you really need the money?

Theres also a few legal issues that might affect normal users. The one im instantly thinking of is that some advertisers might have a problem with people on the forums linking to other sites, sites that might be considered competition. This is a problem Ive encountered on a another much smalller site and which gave the people running it somewhat of a thinker. Heres an example: Lets say that some company offers a product with its tag here on B.net. Someone notices this and starts a thread in which he or she is linking to a site that offers the same product cheaper. Normally this wouldnt be a problem in the Flood, i for one havent seen a thread being locked just because someone linked to a product, but under these circumstances it might cause some problems. It becomes a "why should we pay for ads when other people are doing it for free in the forums",

If you must put them on, I'd really prefer they were on the margins, otherwise it just obstructs the site way too much.

But, say, they were on either side of this post in the large blue pool of space, I'd go for it.

I think ads would be fine if they aren't...

-Pop ups
-Ads that make noise/talk/play music
-Ads that clutter up the forum (ads between forum posts)
-In post ads (ads like these are sort of like hyperlinks, changing certain key words in posts yellow, which once hovered over with the mouse bring up a small ad)

So, in conclusion, I say yes. If it's best for Bungie and makes a better Bnet, I'm all for it.

Any plans for a B.net Gold Member in a few years time? I would pay $10 to be a member here and it would cut out a lot of problems such as needing advertising and spammers on alt accounts if they can't even get into half the site.
I would pay that. If it's done it has to be the same policy as Something Awful has, one time...forever.

Instead of adds, Bungie.net gold would be very useful to raise a few extra bucks. But there is already a "gold" feature for extra space on your file share...

I like soft, sensual kisses. I like to make love.

No. I dont want to have some sortof Party Poker popups when I am trying to view my game stats or anything...

I think this is one of the only websites I know of that is completely ad free. Advertisements are everywhere. This is probably the last place I would want to see any >_>

Personally, I'm not a fan of ads at all. I really don't like them, but looking at it from Bnet's point of view, its free money, free money that will keep Bungie in business (as if you all really need it) and keep them making us great games. Preferably, I would rather not see ads on Bnet, but it looks like its going to happen so if you do put ads on Bnet, please try to keep them at a minimum that wont affect users.

  • 01.02.2008 10:28 AM PDT

Honestly, there is no form of ads that would prevent me from coming to this website, or even discourage for that matter. If I come here, it's for a specific purpose, and two seconds of my time to exit out of a pop up wouldn't be reason enough to hastily close my browser.

With that said, I know that you guys wouldn't even consider those incredibly annoying ads (talking, music, inducing seizures, cripple load time) but by all means, if adding a few banners advertisements would greatly benefit this community, go ahead.

I'm sure no one here would actually hold a grudge for the 24 more pixels they're have to scroll.

Make it like gamespot or yahoo news. You can't go to the site until you have sat through a few minutes of video ads or flash ads with no way to close them.

(my apologies to gamespot, you aren't as bad as yahoo news.)

(and NO i DONT really want that)
