You know how you don't allow bumping? Well, say someone on the files forums really wants their content to be seen. They can't bump it, and the files forums move pretty fast. How about a "bump button" that could only be used once or twice per hour for each person? And threads would go the same way. The button could only be used once or twice an hour on an individual thread by any person, then, anyone who wanted to use the button on that thread would have to wait until the waiting period was over to bump the thread again.

If you don't get what I mean, then here is a simple explanation.
Each user here would get one or two bumps per hour, then would have to wait an hour to get the ability to bump again.
Each THREAD would get one or two bumps an hour, and then nobody would get to bump that thread again until an hour has passed.

If you find anything bad about this idea, please tell me.
Bumping a thread to the top of the forum to get more intention usually indicates that members did not wish to discuss this topic. If that is the case, why would we implement this if it would allow you to bring up threads that are not being discussed and burry threads that are. It is not plausible and would not benefit the Bungie.net community as a whole. Bungie.net is not going to encourage bumping, especially with the intention of the feature you described.

Plus, we are also seeing a new form of bumping.

I won't go too far into details as I do not want to encourage members to try it.

But there is a quid pro quo form of bumping that is making its rounds.

Interestingly enough, the spam reporters are seeing it, reporting it, and even without the ability to send a text explanation, it is visible to the ninjas.

Seems to me if you did delve into any details, the last line of your post ought to quell any thoughts about trying it.

Clearly, the ninjas see all; we ought to be staying on the straight-and-narrow like Max Payne on that trail of blood. haha

You don't go to the files forums, do you? NO, it is NOT screenshots I'm worried about getting buried, I'm talking about map variants! It moves way too fast for people to see them. They can't just view it on their computer, they have to go to their 360 and do it. Which is a pain, because without screenshots, they won't know what they're getting.

The bumping button would do greater harm. It would cause the forum to move even faster because everyone would be doing it. And suddenly no one is posting anymore because everyone is just trying to get their thread to the top. The postings from other people is the only valid bump because it should be adding a new and significant opinion to the discussion.

Bumping is beginning to get very very annoying, like nudges on msn, like pokes on facebook, and last but not least peoples' threads are starting to look like political campaigns with all their flaming and cheap ways to get people to view and rate(vote). And to tell you the truth most of the threads that are being bumped are screenshots that frankly are not very significant in quality or just have been seen/posted before. So no one should have the right to shove it in anyones face, it induces flaming.

I visit every forum, some more than others and maybe you just misunderstood me. I'm not talking about screenshots or map variants, I'm talking about threads in every forum. You have have to realize that what you just described does not just affect you and your threads, it affects everyone because there are excessive numbers of threads being created in a short period of time. And yes, I agree people do have a hard time downloading the map variant, checking it out, and then wanting to post a comment in that particular thread.

Unfortunately, that's how it works and if you bump your thread it burries another causing them wanting to bump their thread, with the cycle just repeating. After a while, the process of how the forums run would change into how a member could bump their thread to the top, rather than the original intention of discussing one of the most recent topics that you happen to find interesting. I'm sorry, but that's life and not everything can be the way you invision it to be. I am not trying to put you down or insult your request, but honestly with the current structure of Bungie.net, your idea will most likely be declined because of its overall purpose.

omg You bumped.

I still think people would bump with replies, and it sounds like an overly difficult endeavour to follow.

-TGP-

I very much agree. Things like this sound great in your head, but become unnecessary and tedious when trying to make a finished product.

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

No.

If people are interested in your content, they will find it. It is a process of elmination, if the community likes the content then they leave feedback or download the material, else they move on. I understand that content comes and goes quickly in the forums, but bumping is not a solution. Creative advertising and following the rules are the best things to do until there is a solution. I don't have a solution so I am just here to disagree with the bumping idea. Possibly limit the number of content threads you can make per hour or day?

So I think Jun's a master chef, because he takes off his helmet and your like whoa, I think he's a chef.

So to shorten this up, Jun is master chef.

I'd have to say no on this. Despite my feeling about my threads and content and how I want it to be seen, I'm against it. However, I do see why bumping is helpful in places like the Halo 3 forum. It moves ridiculously fast and is filled with threads that are meaningless where people simply go there to tell the person how bad they are at life. Many-a-time have I seen a thread that is useful get thrown to page three in a matter of minutes. It annoys me many times, but that's what groups are for.

Bumping should be allowed. You know when you ask someone a question and they avoid answering it and change the subject? But then you ask you're question again even though they change subjects. That's sort of like bumping. ARE YOU SAYING WE CAN'T DO THAT HERE!11!!!!11!!

I think a system I used on a personal forum a while back was a good idea.

If a user posts in a thread and the latest post in the thread was also theirs, instead of adding a reply, it would simply append the new post to the previous one as an edit. Thus making replying to multiple posts easy and suppressing bumping.

But they reply to every post that anyone else makes, they say nothing, just a statement about the statement the previous person said. So its just people have to not be stupid and act like kids about their pictures or posts. There are good posts that get drowned by dumb threads but they find their way back up eventually. If there was no dumb threads or bumping dead threads then there would only be active and interesting threads remaining, how it was supposed to be.

BUMPERS ARE NOW BEING SEVERELY PUNISHED; THE PUNISHMENT WILL MAKE YOU WISH YOU WERE NEVER BORN.

I think that'll help.

Worthless threads sink fast for a reason.

That's true for the most part, but at any one point there are thousands of people posting simultaneously. I have posted Threads that were thrown off the first 2 pages in Seconds (literally).

You know the 25 members whose threads pushed yours off page 1 experienced the exact same thing moments later?

And there doesn't need to be another 50 people bumping their threads to contribute to the problem.

I'm not saying bumping is the solution, I know it's not. If I have a thread sink then I usually just ask a few Friends to check it out at a time when Bnet isn't too busy. That way it doesn't get knocked down so quickly and people notice it.

I understand this. I guess there isn't really anything that can be done about it. If bumping is against the rules we'll just have to suck it up and put a bit of effort into our Threads then hope for the best. =P

If they get noticed then good, if not so be it.

If you add the idea of 'bumping' then you also need the idea of 'burying' topics (sage goes in every field), and both extremes are selfish. Instead of bumping just put more thought into what you call your thread and what you write. If it's a good topic (or people know the answer to your question) then they'll reply.

If you build it they will come. :)

Yeah, here's why I hate bumping:
I'll use 3 days ago as an example.
link

I make a thread that multiple members in the Halo 3 forums said that was well thought out. Interestingly, many of them said I was so smart I must belong in The Flood. Think about how correct/wrong that was at the same time please.

Anyway, I was barely able to keep in in the top 20's by simply replying to the comments of other members. However, it was soon removed from the front page. So when I went to check what else was on, I have to say that about half of the threads had been bumped by the OP. That's horrible.

I don't mean to sound whinny when I say this, or to sound like I am praising myself, I just wanted to highlight the situation. When a thread that is commended by multiple members(however low the standards of that forum may be) cannot even stay on the front page for over 10 minutes, there is a problem. Period.

It was quite disheartening. However, I did move on.
